Ok, I'll admit, being a guy it might be a little wierd to get excited about a piece of jewelry, but I am excited, because now I get to look at one of my gems anytime I want, and not have to wait until I get home to look at the collection!
This is my new ring..its been a little while, but I finally have it on!
The stone: This is a Heated-Only Sapphire from Madagascar. It weighed 2.55ct and measures 8.5x6.1mm. It came originally from Tan, and I was lucky enough to buy it from a PS'r. It is the perfect color that I was looking for, a nice Royal blue, perhaps Medium Dark, nice saturation. It had some zoning issues, and had a window...but it faced up a great color blue and the zoning wasn't that noticable. I decided it was going to be THE stone, so I then sent it to Dan Stair to see what he could do with it.
Dan Stair said he could improve the zoning, and close the window, by recutting part of the Pavillion. I believe he said the culet was slightly off center, I am not sure exactly. When I got the stone back from Dan..wow! It is stunning! The zoning is all but impossible to see now (aside from the side of the pavillion) and what a difference his tweaking/recutting made! I cannot remember how much weight was lost, as it wasn't important to me, but I believe it was about .20ct if memory serves.
Next, I had a .25ct white Diamond from my previous ring which I scrapped, and I was very lucky to find an almost exact-match on the 'bistro for an awesome price. So now, what to do? I found a picture online of a style that I liked, which I thought would work well with this stones zoning issues...its a bezel set of course, and the way the stone is colored, since it is only the bottom that actually has color, I figured it wouldn't darken up too much and I was right!
The setting: I sent my "inspiration" pic over to Jeff Davies on eBay (Jeffdvs101). Jeff has amazing gemstones, don't get me wrong, but he was happy to create the setting for me even though I had my own stones. He said he could do something nice for me, gave me an estimate (which was very reasonable..despite what Fed Ex charged me to ship the stones...rip off!!!). So I shipped the stones, and two weeks later it was completed, and Jeff was nice enough to Fed Ex it to me free of charge (THANKS JEFF!!!).
The setting is 18k white gold, rhodium plated. It weighs a solid 10grams. It is comfortable, fits perfectly, and looks great on my hand! There is no zoning in this stone! Ok, so there may be zoning, but you can not see it, not with the work they did with the setting, and the design they used. It looks great in all lighting, too. It goes a little violet under the CFLs at home, which is cool, but most of the time its a royal blue or a medium blue. I haven't really studied what lighting does what to the stone, but I love it..never goes black, never even close to going black.
I know my pics don't do the stone or the ring any justice...as my camera always de saturates and darkens stones..but I think you can get a gist of it. Between the smarts of the PS'r buying the stone despite its zoning (bezel set!!), Dan Stairs cutting to help the stone, and Jeff's Jewelry team, I am a very happy camper.
Sorry this got so long!!
