Ok...I am finally OK with the pics that I was able to take today of my newest stone.
This is a 2.49 (YES!) ct Tsavorite Garnet, from Tanzania. This is an elongated oval, 9.5x7mm, and has an awesome cut. It has crazy brilliance, and also has incredible glow in low light!
It has numerous "sugar" inclusions, which made it hard to photograph, as the camera emphasizes them more than anything else about the gem. But, you cannot see them without a loupe (or the cameras magnification). The sugar inclusions are really helping the stone glow in low light--which is what I have always heard about with these garnets (and Spessartites).
The color is really bright...and, a little lighter in tone than what I prefer or normally prefer. But the benefit of it being a lighter stone...it doesn't black out in lower light like many of my other stones (including my other Tsavorite which is much darker). So I do see the benefits of going with a lighter stone. Still, this isn't "light' by any means. Its medium in my opinion. It is really nicely saturated and overall I feel I got a great deal.
My pics downplay saturation and emphasize the inclusions, but its the best I could do. I followed some suggestions by Kenny and Gene and I put white paper all over the black body of my cameraphone. It definately helped--you should see the before pics! I also took these outside, on a cloudy day (on a piece of frozen snow!).
This will be bezel set into a ring for myself (I want to 'darken it up' a bit). I haven't decided on Rose Gold or White Gold. My Chrome Tourmaline is in Yellow Gold and I dont want it to be similar. I havent decided if I want to use side-stones (was thinking maybe oval mint garnets, or white zircon supernovas I saw online) or if I just want it to be a solitaire. I thought briefly of trying to include my other Tsavorite (1.18ct, 6.78mm trillion) but it makes the big Tsav look too light (to me...I know..I know) and the big oval makes the trillion look too poorly cut (it isnt but it sure is compared to Genes). So those are my thoughts at the moment...
I think Genes pic is pretty accurate for the color of the stone, but I do wish that I had one of his new 400x400 sized pics. (Sorry Gene! I just cant duplicate your awesome camera setup and Im jealous of what your new stones pictures look like!)
This is (by far) my biggest gemstone purchase...and I was reluctant because nobody was buying it, and the picture didn't wow me...but I took Genes advice and Im glad I did. Oh, and in case anyone is wondering---it has ZERO extinction or half-half.
