My Son Proposed with a Brian Gavin Blue

What a great story! I love that he came to you for help-smart man! :appl: Congratulations to your son and his fiancee!

And the ring is absolutely gorgeous! I just purchased a BGD Blue myself in December and I can't believe how white it faces up. Don't think I'll ever go back to non-fluoro stones again!

A beautiful ring and a beautiful story -- what an excellent experience to share with your son and future DIL. I think you all did a fantastic job! :appl:

I second these sentiments! :appl:

What a lovely story and the ring is beautiful :appl: It looks so white and I love the little claw prongs that BGD does so well!

HI:

Great job Fly-family! Congrats!

cheers--Sharon

Congrats!! Great story and I loved how you "educated" your son! Beautiful stone and setting.

Congratulations! Beautiful ring!
May I ask what's your DIL-to-be's ring size since I'm considering buying the same setting from Brian Gavin with a diamond relatively close to what your son has bought. It would made it easier to imagine the ring also in my finger. :)

Congratulations to the newly-engaged couple. :D

Well done, everybody.
I advised him that a wise man would propose during the 15 day full money refund period offered by Brian Gavin Diamonds.
^ That made me laugh (but not in a bad way.) I'm always thinking along practical lines that way. Much to everyone else's consternation.

Thank you so very much for your lovely comments and well-wishes pandabee, rubyshoes, Laila619, minousbijoux, Effe, JaneSmith, marcy, KaeKae, Enerchi, PintoBean, marymm, Cachette, blingymo, diamondseeker2006, bastetcat, Owies Nana, Skippy, nielseel, artdecogirl, junebug17, Dancing Fire, LaraOnline, Iknvrb4, justginger, yennyfire, thing2of2, Malbec54, stargurl78, canuk-gal, bebe, Kalomeli, Julienyc, and TC1987!

It was such a pleasure to finally put some of my PS knowledge to work. Besides the diamond knowledge, PS helps keep me in touch with what younger women are thinking. For example, I told my son that there were many, many threads where the guy bought the ring and then didn't give it to the girl for weeks, and that this only upset the ladies. He never intended to keep hang on to the ring for a long time, so that was good.

I had not been paying attention to the BGD claw prongs, so those were a pleasant surprise when I saw the glamour photos. I pointed those out to future DIL. She asked, "what are they normally, little blobs?" Yep, pretty much. She loves the prongs on her ring, of course. Her mother never had a diamond, so she loves having one, and such a pretty one at that.

I especially appreciated diamondseeker2006's recent hunt for a diamond from GOG, and her insights about the H color. I'm not an expert on color at all, preferring to upgrade to higher color for my own rings. I told my son a J should be as low as he goes, but he nixed that idea when he could see the color in my J earring. I then assured him an H would be fine, and I'm really glad that it turned out that way.

Kalomeli, I'll have to ask future DIL about the ring size for you.

I can see how this diamond ring shopping would be really stressful for a young man. This is the biggest purchase of his young life so far, and I'm glad to be able to give somewhat intelligent advice. It sure is different now than when we bought my first diamond. Diamond ring shopping has come a long ways in the past few years. Thank you all for helping out!

What an awesome thing to be able to do for your son and what a special way to "be there for him" as a Mom - I bet there aren't too many sons that would have their moms help on such an important purchase. :appl:

Hi, Fly Girl-

As I have told some other posters on this forum, I usually do not hang out here, so I usually miss the threads here. While I love reading your threads, I usually see them in other fora than here. I happened to be here for another thread, saw the thread on your son's proposal and read it, and have been using it. I didn't think to give you any feedback on it until today, however!

The older son of one of my best friends seems about to embark on a second marriage, his first having ended in divorce. The young woman to whom he plans to propose has never been married before and he will be proposing traditionally (more or less). I know that she wants an engagement ring. (She also told me-while he grimaced-that she would like him to ask her father for her hand!)

I have had some discussion of diamonds with the couple, although the bride-to-be's father knows a jeweler and jewelry, and I sent her a link to Pricescope. When I saw your thread, however, I sent a link to it to both parties so that they could see what you had helped your son to find.

By the way, I had never heard of Brian Gavin Blues! Are they among the stones Brian cuts himself? I believe he actually cuts some stones himself...or at least he used to! That was one of the things I found hard to believe years ago. I had thought that only Eightstar did its own cutting here, that everyone else had stones cut in Europe ind Israel. But I digress. I've enjoyed this thread. You did good work!

Thank you, minousbijoux.

Deb/AGBF - Thank you, and thank you for your story. That's a big reason to post our experiences here, to help out others. So, I'm glad to be of help, as others have helped us.

Brian Gavin Blues are cut to the same parameters as his Signature Hearts and Arrows, but the diamonds have blue fluorescence. The Blues are not marketed as Hearts and Arrows, but I suspect most of them are. Brian Gavin has never carried fluorescent diamonds in the past, and this line is a relatively recent addition. I read a PS thread about the Blues where one vendor commented that marketing fluorescent diamonds as a separate line was a brilliant idea that he wished he had thought of. As you know, most vendors just have fluorescent diamonds mixed in with the non-fluorescent stones. It does give a lot of comfort when buying a diamond with very strong fluorescence to know that Brian Gavin has given it his o.k.

I compared the diamond ring we got from BGD to one with the same specs from a well-known national B&M chain. Their ring was over twice as expensive.

One other comment that I loved came from our State Farm agent when she saw the diamond specs on the AGS certificate and the invoice from BGD. She told my son, "You did good. Really, really good. And, I see it all." I'm sure that she does!

It does help that my son and future DIL have the same view that I do about how to spend a limited ring budget. Put as much money as you can into the diamond. Knowing that she wanted a simple setting that said "engagement ring" made many of our decisions easier.

Good luck to your friends.

Great story and so sweet you could help him out. I picked out my own ring, I also went for blue flourescence & decided to spend the budget on the diamond and got a plain setting in order to show it off. I love the Tiffany style setting, would have got it myself but it was quite a bit extra on the website I used. So big thumbs up from me on your choice! Congrats!

Beautiful choice Flygirl and so nice you were there to help your son choose a top quality diamond from a reputable vendor. I have two sons and look forward to helping them in the same manner some day. What a pretty, classic ring he chose, she must be thrilled!
I visit BGD's site and look at the blue line often :naughty: Keep thinking I need one too.
