Ok, Camping Trip details.
FI and I left Friday afternoon, and ended up getting to the campsite around 3. We put up our tents and set up everything, just in time for the clouds to roll in. There is a light sprinkling going on for maybe an hour or so, but we''re all under tarps so it''s no big deal. My girl friend S says she has to go to the bathroom, so we head over to the port-a-potties. There are 2 of them, both of which look like someome took a dump in and smeared all over. So we decide to walk up to the office area where there is plumbing, toilet, showers, etc. We both go pee and then walk out of our bathroom and its raining a little heavier, but not a big deal really. We get about half way back to the campsite when it starts POURING. I mean, we are seriously getting dumped on. We are both completely drenched by the time we get back to the campsite. Its still raining really hard, so we have to hang out under a tarp for a while because otherwise if we go try to change, we''ll soak our tents with our wet clothes. So we freeze under the tarps, soaking wet, for about an hour.
Finally the rain stops enough for us to get changed into warm clothes. After we all get settled in, a large group of Chaldean guys sets up next to us (Believe, me the fact that they''re Chaldean plays in later, you''ll see why... I''m not mentioning it for no reason) So a couple of guys of ours go over to talk to them, let ''em know we''ll be up late, and that if they aren''t loud/party, that we may bug them, so let us know if we get too loud. The guys say they''re partying too, so no big deal, same for us if they get too loud.
One of the guys in our group gets really, really drunk that night. He brought his wife, who knows no one. He then goes over to the big group of guys next to us and starts bonging beers, doing shots, etc. Finally he comes back and he is SO DRUNK that he runs directly into a tarp pole and falls on the group. His wife is getting really upset, because apparently this happens all the time. They get into a huge fight, he ends up saying he "wishes he wasnt married" and she hears it when she wasnt supposed to. My FI spends the rest of the night trying to sort out the marital issues and calm both of them down. Finally drunk-a@@ gets to bed, and the wife is pretty calm, and goes to hang out at the fire for a while since her hubby is sleeping it off.
I''m tired, and since I don''t really drink, I didn''t want to stay up much later so I get to bed around 11. FI is sick of referee-ing and decides he wants to come to bed. He grabs his phone off the picnic table, and realizes that someone dumped beer all over it. His phone is like 5 or 6 hundred dollars brand new, and he doesn''t have insurance on it. The phone wont turn on, and FI is pissed that these drunk people did that, and broke his phone. Finally, we both are trying to fall asleep. Then the drama starts.
Apparently a big group of US Marines are driving around the campsites, and find the camp of Chaldeans. This particularly group of marines seems to think that these Chaldean guys are "Iraqi Terrorists" and start antagonizing these Chaldean guys. (I ran into the marines the next day at the bathroom, and we were both waiting for a toilet, and he''s telling me about how all Chaldeans/Iraqis/Anyone of middle-eastern descent is a terrorist. Fantastic) Fists are flying, screaming is going on. You hear fists on faces, blood is everywhere. Finally, one of the Chaldean guys shoots off a GUN, which we later found out was a starter pistol. Security shows up, and I guess breaks it up, but no one gets kicked out!
FINALLY we get to sleep after the drama subsides. We wake up at around 3am to severe thunderstorms. Half the people''s tents are leaking. The storms go on for hours, and no one can sleep. The lightning is flashing. It''s horrible. The next morning the rain is stopped, but then starts up again after we''d all eaten breakfast. We''re supposed to go tubing that day at noon, but its like 60 degrees and raining. Half the people still end up going, and half stay behind. Eventually the sun comes out, so FI and I, and the couple we invited decide we''re not staying another night. We take down our tents, but its starting to get really warm, and we re-think tubing. We decide in the midst of eating and tent-taking-down that we want to do a short trip, and end up going for the 1.5 hour trip. The weather was nice for the whole trip, but as soon as the tubing trip is over, the storms roll in again. Blue skies to storms in minutes. We''re driving back to the campsite after the tubing trip, and its POURING. Our tent was still out, but un done. We had it lying in the sun to dry it out. Now our tent is SOAKED, as well as all the food we left out. We have to pack everything up soaking wet, and finally make our way out of there. Not to mention, FI lost our waterproof digital camera on the river. 600 dollar phone = busted, 500 dollar camera = lost. 1100 total electronics damage: Weekend Total.
Worst. Trip. Evar.
