I went to Chris Jacobs yesterday to get my stone appraised. He was great. Very professional and friendly. He was able to get me in on the same day I called him; short notice. I''d recommend him to anyone in the SD area looking for an appraiser.

Garek, thanks for your post...but...if your list for why you like him is no longer than what you''ve already posted...I think if someone in your situation posted again for a need for an appraiser in San Diego, I''d mention Patrick Davis again.

Unless...you might like to say more. Apart from being easily available (?), and professional, why else did you like him.

Did he help you understand why you should like your stone? And how?

I don''t know. What makes Patrick Davis so special?

I''ve never been to an appraiser before so I have nothing to compare it to

Garek,

I''ve only been to an appraiser once, too. Frankly, I was pretty disappointed, because perhaps my expectations, based on reading here on Pricescope, were on the high side with respect to analysis of cut.

One thing I note about these two guys is a difference in the equipment they purport to have to use to do their cut analysis.

For your guy, he mentions: ocular proportionscope. Back in the day when diamonds failed to come reliably with certificates that post proportion data, that represented a pretty bad tool if you came in with the diamond unset. Nowadays...with diamonds coming in with grading reports, this may be less important, but...the equipment a guy comes with might suggest something about their sensitivity to cut analysis.

In the appraiser tool area, for Patrick it says: Ideal Scope, H&A Scope, ASET Scope, Sarin DiaScan S15+ with the GIA Facetware, AGS ASET Camera, Gem Instruments (GIA) Proportion Scope, MM Gauge, Crown Angle Gauge, Presidium Digital Leverage Gauge - Digital Pictures of Hearts & Arrow and ASET light return images.

So, yeah, this is more impressive. And...without searching here for any write-ups write now, I have seen people describing their experience with him, why they thought he was helpful, and I''ve found their reports consistent with my thoughts about what might be important to me.

Sorry, Garek, I''m coming off hard, and maybe I shouldn''t be. Your experience is not so uncommon...for a user of an appraiser to come away happy with their report. But...as an older poster once said...how often is it, anyway, that an appraiser tells their customer that they bought a dud.

A question could be...to what extent would the appraiser be even oriented to give an analysis of cut that was simply progressive and complete...forgetting the issue of spin.

You chose to make the post. I''m only asking you why you were motivated to make it.

Many thanks,

I posted because I thought he was good. But I''ll say again that I have no frame of reference. But you bring up some very good points. And he did say the cut was nice, but I don''t think he measured it at all.

Well for what its worth, he was nice, friendly, and provided the service I asked for. Whether the service provided was mediocre or above average I don''t know.

I can say this, for me, I don''t think it would have been worth the drive to LA. Maybe I don''t know much about diamonds, but to me, the appraisal is just something I have to get done. The GIA report tells me what the diamond is and all I need is someone to confirm that. Would be nice to get an ice cream cone or something along with my appraisal, but even without ice cream I can say that I was pleased with the result.

I got an appraisal from Union telling me my stone was 7100, 2k more than what I paid, and Chris told me it was 7300 which confirmed what Union had said. So for my money, he did the job and did it well. Is he top notch? I don''t know. But I can say that I did not want to turn a 95$ appraisal fee into a 250 dollar appraisal fee and lose time by driving to LA. I needed someone close, I needed someone that day, and he was both of those things.

If it''s really important to tell you who to pick for an appraiser maybe pricescope should do a write up and post a sticky....

This has some great details that I wish I would have read before going to my appraiser. I had most of these questions answered but I wasn''t prepared or armed with the rest of them.

Garek, just a quick note to add your follow up was very helpful...and can help many. Not everyone goes to an appraiser for the same thing, and the reasons you went to an appraiser will be common to many. It does sound like your defined needs were met well with Mr. Jacobs, and I appreciate this additional detail.

I know you did a nice write up on Union I should go back to as well.

You''ve worked hard, and it sounds like you''ve had a positive experience. Congratulations!

don''t mind my previous sarcasm, i''m just like that. You brought up some good points and I think it will be useful to others who come across this post.

I wish I had known beforehand what to look for in an appraiser. I might have done a little more homework.
