Need advice choosing between Whiteflash and Gavin loose diamond for engagement ring.

0.75 to 1.25 is a HUGE size range.

A 0.75 ct diamond will sit differently in a setting than a 1.25 ct one will. Just because a random jeweler or sales associate at a jewelry shop says you can get away with putting this size range into a setting does not mean that you should necessarily do it.

You've already stated that you haven't been happy with their honesty in what they are trying to sell you... "Boggles my mind that every jeweler I’ve talked to has tried to sell me a $2000 stone for $6000."

Learnt that lesson today. Wish I found this site sooner.

You're not alone. Found this site a week after I bought my wife's diamond, then promptly called and swapped it for a better cut diamond meeting super ideal cut proportions.

Thankfully, it all worked out in the end, which sounds how things will be for you, too!

If you bought it for gold price as you say, presumably you won't be out anything / hardly anything if you sell for scrap. So even if you can't return that's a positive. I would focus on getting the diamond (size, quality etc) you like best and forgetting about the setting. If it can be safely made to fit that would be a plus, otherwise you can find something similar :)

I suggest you send the setting to WF and have them try different size stones in the setting and let you know how big you can get
away with in the setting. That might dictate the size of the stone unless they can modify the basket to fit a bigger stone (they can
only do so much due to the halo).

We always recommend you buy the stone first then the setting to fit the stone.
