Hi all! Recently engaged and need some advice on whether to repair my ring or replace it. here's the story, ring and wedding band were custom made from a jeweler in CA (we live in IL) it was made to look like tacori 2578 eternity style, platinum band is .85ct and center stone is 2ct round.
Two weeks after I got the ring I noticed the main diamond was loose in it's four prong setting. we sent it back and they happily fixed it. Two weeks after that I noticed a small crack on the inside portion of the shank and sent it back yet another time, they fixed it. Now I am noticing a bend on the inside part of the shank more towards the main diamond. My fiancé is beside himself with grief for many reasons, he is a very proud man. he wants to take it to a local jeweler and have another ring made. I'm torn. I know nothing about jewelry hence my post. Anyone that could lend help would be greatly appreciated

At this point I would probably contact the jeweler who made the ring and ask for a partial/full refund. Just explain that this is the 3rd time you've had an issue with the setting in X amount of time and you'd like to get a new ring remade with a new jeweler. You may not get anywhere, but it can't hurt to ask. If they have other settings there not custom made, you could possibly do an exchange?

I would not let your fiance's pride get in the way of you have a wonderful safe setting for your stone that you love! See if they will work with you, and if not, find a new jeweler. I wouldn't wear a setting that I thought wasn't sturdy!

I would also ask to return it. Three times is my absolute limit and it definitely shows poor craftsmanship. And get a real Tacori this time!

I totally agree. This jeweler is clearly not competent in creating that style ring.

do you have photos of your ring?

I'm pretty much agree with this statement. I understand once or twice but three! That is overkill.

However I will say that I wouldn't have a local person do it either. Looking at your inspiration ring it is an interesting design that can be poorly executed if not done correctly (which I'm guessing is what happened). I would go with someone who has done custom work before and you know you like it.

I never thought to ask the jeweler to pop my diamond into another setting. I am just disgusted about the whole thing. Fiance wants to cut the back part of the ring off and make it solid. I think this will compromise the rest of the ring.

I agree, I will have to find a reputable jeweler. Is there a website that rates jewelers??

Update!!!!!
decided to replace setting was FI idea. waiting to see CAD tomorrow, going with a halo set in a very pretty triple shank band with half way around diamonds. will definitely cost more but FI just told me to tell jeweler to call him when he needs to pay:). I'm very nervous about how it will look. sad sort of to say goodbye to old setting, very sentimental to me, Wasnt a big fan of halos but this one is gorgeous!!
I was a little surprised at the amount they came up with for our out of pocket, I still think it should be an even steven trade. I hope it's not bad luck!!

If you want to look into getting the original setting repaired, you could contact Wink Jones at winkjones.com. He or his bench have done a lot of ring repairs and stone-setting for people who've bought czs or colored gems. Perhaps you could get a colored gem or Avarra gem and still wear the original e-ring as a special occasion or occasional-use ring. It might be fine for that, just not strong enough for everyday wear.

Great Idea!! I wish We could keep the setting but I doubt FI will be willing to shell out extra 10k for a new setting (I am keeping my center diamond) With the old setting as a trade we still have to come out of pocket 3k . maybe it's a sign:)
