Hi Everyone,

Im in the market for a 4-6 carat or so yellow Zircon. Im looking at Gemcal and Gemfix and the color ranges from pale yellow to golden yellow, to brownish/red yellow, etc to pale satuation to dark saturation. Does the shape define the gem? I leaning towards anything but round.

Does it matter? Is there hue A should lean towards? Is there region that produces more quality Zircons that I should consider. Im confused and just need a little advise or thoughts if you don't mind.

I'd really appreciated any comments.

Thanks a bundle!

I think you're going to get a lot of answers on this, as there are different tastes when it comes to stones.

Zircon comes in quite a range and I like all them all! If a fun stone for me. Of course, the most expensive aren't the yellows! So I think its more up to you. Do you want a more pale yellow or a honey yellow? does brown bother you at all in a stone? how about red?

You don't tend to find super yellows in zircons though and most will be mixed with a little something. Gene has one on his site. This one is quite lovely http://precisiongem.com/html/html/zircon.html Yellows also tend to be heated, as they can be a bit brownish.

I think as long as the color is pleasing to your eye, and the color is saturated then you're fine as long as you're not paying out too much per ct.

Thanks Arcadian!!!

I prefer the natural yellow which has the brown. Seems the Sir Lanka and Burma area has most of these from my research. I lean towards the unheated untreated gems. Love the nature of it all :twirl:

Thanks for the Gene link...i think he heats some of his yellows to remove the brown. They are gorgeous! Gene does beautiful work.

Gemfix has a couple yellow Zircon that are intriguing to me in radiant cuts. I think these are more honey yellow. So i guess I prefer honey over pale yellow.

I not sure what would be appropriate to pay per carat. Don't want to get ripped off.

Thank again Arcadian!!!! :appl:

Hi,

My favorite zircon is the described as honey or champagne colored zircon from Sri Lanka. I think you would be very happy with a yellow zircon leaning towards a hint of pink as these names suggest. Zircon is often overlooked, and I think with a little bit of a search you will find a real bargain here.

There is a gem dealer in the US that specializes in Zircon, perhaps a non trade member can put forward a name.

One of the reasons I love this material is because with a high refractive index and availability in lighter values it is very forgiving when testing new gemstone designs.

Enjoy the search and don’t settle for anything you don’t love – you will find some fantastic yellows!

Regards,

Jeffrey Hunt

AJS has a lot of zircon

Zircon are strongly bi-refringent. The pavilion facets often appear blurred or doubled because of this. When cut with the C-axis perpendicular to the table the doubled appearance is minimized. Some people like it, some people dont.
YOu might also want to search in pricescope for a thread about zircon and heating. If there is no diagnostic test to differentiate heated stones from untreated, the state of the stone cannot be known unless you mine it yourself. Given that it may not be important to you to limit yourself to "unheated" zircons.

JeffreyH-Thank you for your comments!!! Your words are inciteful. I am enjoying the search very much!!! Always exciting finding 'new' gems!!! There are some beautiful yellows. From my reasearch I am learning Zircon from Tanzania are heated to achieve yellow, but tha Zircon from Sri Lanka are not, however they have a brownish hue as well. Also learning a Zircon with the right cut and pavillion angle will have beautiful dispersion, fire and brilliance!!!! Very exciting!!

VapidL- Thank you for the comments. I did check out AGS link! Thank you for this!! They have some beautiful Zircons! Untreated is very important to me. I have been emailing the vendors to get specific info of where the gems are from and what treatment if any, to assist me with my decision process.

Barry at ACS has a wonderful cushion cut Zircon. I have an email out to him to get more info on it.

Thanks for your comments and knowledge! I really really appreciate it!!

Thanks again!

Just wanted to let you know I received my yellow zircon.

5.58 carats from Hemi at Gemcal. He was very informative, knowledgeable, patient, and attentive.
posted the vendor shots on "vendor and owner shots" thread topic.

However, though very informative, the "educate me on zircon" thread gave me reservations and I had every intention of returning this zircon. I ordered a silver/lavender spinel to replace it and everything!!

Heres a brief story summarizing my experience (if anyones interested)

"Reluctantly drove to Fedex to recieve my package. During the entire drive there a made a conscious, i mean, extremely conscious decision, NOT to open the package! So with a slightly anxious but extremely uneasy attitude (because i don't understand why i want to see it if im returning it!! ), I opened the package. At the very moment my eyes grabbed hold of this beautiful gem, I felt the wind instantly blowing through my hair and heard the trumpets sounding! I was in l :cheeky:ve!"

Why the heck did I open the package. I had everything under control until i opened that darn package. So there you have it. I keeping it. Because the color is just what i was looking for and the cut is absolutely amazing to me. What I am going to do with it...i haven't the slightest idea. :twirl:
