Need help choosing a Pink Spinel or Morganite Stone

Agreed--my first thought on viewing the stone was the window. Keep looking--I'm sure you can find something nicer!

This Etsy vendor has a few spinels in the color you want. I've ordered from him before, he's nice.

Great suggestion!

The emerald cut spinel on the vendor's site looks like the perfect color-- funny it is listed as a morganite substitute rather than spinel?

GlamMom-- it is 8.07 by 5.71-- is that too small? Maybe the vendor has other stones?

I have never purchased from Africa Gems, but I have this hunch that this stone is going to be closer to the light icy pink color than you think-- and it might even be the very color you never knew you always wanted! :twirl:

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!! I had taken a break from gem searching for a few days and have gorged myself on lots of yummy foods and sweets! So now that I have come out of my carb and sugar induced coma I have began searching for the perfect stone.

I contacted Pristine Gems on Etsy and they have been wonderful in helping me to find what I am looking for. It has come down to two stones and I am not sure which I like better. They will need to be recut on the bottom to correct the refractive index. However, Pristine Gems will be the ones to recut them. Here is the info on the stones:

So, the larger of the two is 2.34cts, 8.6 x 7.1mm. You will see what looks like an inclusion in the close up photos, but it is actually a chip on the underside of the stone that Rogerio will repair. It is SI clarity because of some microscopic inclusions in one corner that you may be able to see in the close up photo as well. However, I think this one is very good value, as it is similar in size to the 2.43ct stone they showed me earlier, but because of those tiny inclusions, it is priced at $320. This stone will lose some weight after Rogerio recuts it.

The second stone is 1.56cts, 6.8 x 5.9mm, VS clarity, and this one sells for $180.

Which do you think is the better stone? I have to say the color on the stones is spot on for what I'm looking for :)

Hi GM: Is it a spinel or a morganite?

Here is a close up of the 1.56 cts and also a picture of a stone that Pristine Gems has already recut to show the difference it will make.

So you are looking for a blush pink stone! Got it! If those are spinels, I think you could find something similar for a bit less. That said, it sounds like you've found exactly what you like and you may not think its worthwhile to keep looking. If they are willing to recut the stone, I would go for the larger of the two, as the size looks great on your long fingers. It has a bit of a window, so maybe when he cuts out the chip, he can recut the pavilion facets a bit to minimize it. I love the cushion shape. I assume the price includes the cutting?

Yes, both stones are Spinels. The costs does include the recutting and I thought the prices seemed reasonable. Those aren't my fingers in the pictures (though I wish they were-lol). I have shorter fingers than the hand model :wink2:

I guess I really can't decide between the rounded corners of the larger cushion stone or the square corners of the smaller cushion.

Since both are by the same vendor, can he / she take a picture of the 2 spinels side by side on the same hand? Either way, both spinels need a recut. They are both windowed and the lovely lustre and sparkle of a spinel will not come through. Knowing that, I'd go with the larger one (if both are of the same colour). What is the expected final ct weight and mm dimension after tweaking it?

You might ask the vendor if they will send both stones to you on memo so that you can evaluate them. You might have to pay for postage and/or give a credit card #, but since you are planning an e-ring, you should probably see the stones on your hand before committing if possible.

Another idea is if you live in an area where you can get to an Intergem show, that would be a great opportunity to see lots of stones w/o any obligation.

Beautiful color!
