So I have spent the last month researching everything I could about diamonds--mostly reading hundreds of PriceScope forums. I had the diamond and setting (http://jamesallen.com/#!/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-tapered-six-prong-filigree-basket-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-1086) picked out, and I was ready to order it. Unfortunately, at the last minute, I realized that the diamond I wanted was too small. I assumed that a .7 carat diamond would be fine, but James Allen requires a .75 carat diamond for the setting I want.

Now I sit in a tight spot. I need to get a larger diamond, but I do not want to spend much more than I already budgeted. Originally, I had a .7 carat, excellent cut, H color, SI1 diamond picked out. Now, I have narrowed it down to two diamonds that are large enough for the setting. The first is a .75 carat, excellent cut, H color, SI2.

The second is an excellent cut, .76 carat, I color, VS2.

Which one of these is the better deal? Will the SI2 diamond be eye clean? I do not think the slight change in color will show in a white gold setting, but I am not sure. Any and all help is much appreciated!

First one is leaky, I don't much like the second one either. What is your budget for the diamond?

Sorry! I meant to include that bit of information. I can go up to $2,700 on the diamond. I have $3,400 total, but the setting is $700.

If another PSer doesn't find one to your liking (although I'm sure someone can find something), or if you're quite set on the diamond you already picked out, I believe JA will still let you set the 0.70ct diamond. I asked them a few days ago via chat when I thought I would be in the same situation with my small budget, and the rep said anything within 0.10ct should be fine.

Although in my case, there was a good reason why the limits were there in the first place (the sidestones would've been too big for the center stone (thanks JulieN)

Anyways, just a thought

I was also thinking they could set the stone you already picked out. Dosen't seem like that much of a size difference. Did you ask them?

Here is a picture, so you don't have to follow the link.

It is not a big difference, so ask if JA is able to set it the .7

I still think you should pick 3 and ask for a gemological review.
