Per DH''s request, I am turning to my fellow PSers for help with a potential purchase for an old European cut diamond ring

As we are not really familiar with the pricing and grading for older cut stones, we are hoping PS will help shed some light as to whether or not this will be a good purchase. We are trying to balance the four C''s and willing to sacrifice on color as this is an antique stone (and Oh I LOVE those chunky facets!

).

The specs (per seller) are as follows:

Cut: Old European
Carat: 2.53
Color: M-N
Clarity: VS2
Diameter: 8.7mm
Set in 14k Rose Gold
Price $7750 (and I think there is a little more room for negotiation)

There is no paperwork attached with the ring but there is a return policy therefore if purchased we will be getting a second opinion. I have used this seller before and exercised the return policy so I believe they are trustworthy.

Since all I have are pictures, I am going to attach a ton... so let me apologize in advance for the picture overload...

TIA for your opinions!

I think it is gorgeous in the pics! And for what it''s worth, I LOVE the warmer colors, especially in an antique cut! Good luck and come back with lots more pics if you get it!

PS - this is pretty much my dream diamond, LOL, so of course I''d go for it!

It looks very nice in the photo, if you know the seller and think this is " the one" and can get an expert to check it out during the return policy, then it could be worth serious consideration.

Ohhh.. I have that on my watch list.. but if I recall it''s $9,500? I''ve been tempted to make an offer myself.. either way it''s a beautiful stone

It sure looks like a beauty from the pictures!

That looks positively beautiful!!! I would be very happy having that stone myself. I love the warmer colors in older cuts. As for the price, I can''t say. Usually don''t look at stones that size, but it doesn''t strike me as a bad deal either.

I LOVE it. As long as you have a return window where you can get it appraised I''d snap it up in a heart beat at that price, or even at the $9k price...

For that price I would buy it! Gorgeous!

I love the ring that you showed in your photos (the chunky facets and the crown setting set each other off so well)

This is my first post on this forum - when I was looking online for information about how to judge the quality of an old European cut diamond, your forum thread popped up, and I had to register. I hope that you go ahead with the purchase, although if you don''t, I will brazenly ask where you found the ring because I fell in love with it!

Oh that''s gorgeous

If you''re comfortable with the seller and know you can return no-hassles if it turns out not to be what you expect or appraises poorly... go for it!

This stone seem gorgeous! Just check for the % of the table. For me, it''s important to have a small table around 49%.

Also, watch for the girdle. If the girdle is really thin you can have chips problem if you wear it everyday.

Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I was a little thrown off guard with the last post by tradergirl. I have contacted the seller regarding this ring as well and that was the price she offered me. I did not post the link to the auction because obviously I was considering purchasing it therefore was very surprised when the auction link was attached. I thought it was forum etiquette to respect other member''s possible purchases since members have lost purchase and auctions to lurkers.

Either way, thanks for everyone''s post!

Thank you for pulling the thread with the link

I really do appreciate that.

I love it and if you can get a good independent appraisal then it seems worth seeing what they say!

well... guess its my lucky night... an hour or so after the link was posted, the auction was sold to a buyer at $7750 (what a coincidence!) I knew there were lurkers out there....

back to square one for me, arghhhhh I am fuming!

I bet she will Karpouzi, this wasn''t the one - thats the way I always try to look at these things anyway and it often is the case that something better is just around the corner!

Oh, I''m so sorry. I hope you''ll find something even better soon!

Oh bummer Sukii!!
