I finally (after 10 weeks) got pictures of the mounting for my ruby. I asked for approval before setting the stone. One thing they didn't do was flatten out the outer prongs on the diamonds so they wouldn't stick out.

Since I'm dying to have it on my finger, should I ask them to fix this, or is it okay as is? I just don't want them to be distracting and make the halo pointy looking.

What would you (or should I) do?

Absolutely have them do it. It shouldn't take long at all - I doubt your ring will be delayed much if any. And the fix will make you happier with your ring. So it's a no-brainer. Which my phone initially auto-corrected as "no brassiere," just FYI. I am not sure what it thought I was writing about.

Actually, no brassiere is right on! For me anyway!! :wavey: I think I'm going to use that.

If it isn't perfect to you then certainly have them adjust it now which will take much less time then doing it later :-)

But it looks stunning !!!

It's beautiful as is, but I think you should make sure you receive it exactly as you want it-- I know I pick something to death over time when I was fine with it initially.

If you could get it tomorrow, would you have them correct it? If yes, that's your answer.

It doesn't matter what we think about it, it matters what you like!

(but if it were me, and they didn't do what I asked for, I'd have them fix it, asap. Keep in mind that is different from actually receiving something...then I might sit on it and see if I like it. But ahead of time? Probably would ask them to change.)

Well, initially I wanted them minimized. But as I look at the picture they don't bother me like I thought they would. Actually, the only thing that is going through my head is WWPSD? I kinda like that it doesn't look like a regular halo. I'm just wondering if it looks too pedestrian without the refinement? My snobbishness (obtained solely since joining PS) doesn't want it to be perceived as an "off the shelf" piece.

I like it.

Imagine yourself living with it every day. Will it get to you? If so, best time to fix it is now. I have a watch I bought on eBay w/diamond bezel -- same thing w/the prongs. Because i liked the rest of the watch a lot, I didn't pay much attention to the prongs in the pics when I bought it but now, after 6 months, they kind of bother me. If you dislike it at all, it'll probably become more so as time goes on. Gorgeous ring either way, though!!!

I don't know. Does anyone think having the outer prongs different from the shared prongs might look weird? Does anyone have an example of mixed prongs like that?

The outer prongs look very appropriate just as they are, in my opinion. I think they play up the 'flower/petal' look of the setting and it looks delicate to my eye.

Sleep on it - it will come to you at some point and then you'll have your answer - fix before mailing out or they are just perfect. You'll know!!

Hi, I tried posting earlier, but I see now it never went through. Here I go again...

Your ring is beautiful and I am a huge fan of halos! Would you mind telling me what size your diamond melee are and what the color grade is? Here's my story, I originally wanted bigger diamonds on my halo, but was convinced by the seller that smaller melee would be more balanced and the center of the ring was the sapphire, not the side diamonds. Since they were saving me money I thought they knew best...but now I know I love larger diamonds! :)

If you think that after the excitement (getting the ring now) wears down that you won't obsess about the outer prongs than do what your heart desires...but you also might find yourself thinking that you should have stuck to your original idea. I, myself don't care for the flower look which is why I chose a setting with the prongs only between the diamonds. I see you have that as well, therefore, the pointy flower look is less noticeable and looks elegant. I don't know if it will make that much of a difference look wise if you were to flatten out the prongs. Seems you want the flower look as oppose to not having those prongs there in the first place?

Oh, and FWIW, my friend's blue sapphire in a Neil Lane setting (the real thing, not the Kay's crap. Her friend works for them and she makes house calls) is set exactly like your ring, yellow gold shank, white head, prongs and all.

I think I would have the prongs flattened a bit... I think it will still have the flowery look but not so pointy. If that's what you are leaning towards, definitely do it now rather than wait until later.

I like the pointy flowery look, as the way it is.
My only concern is, will the outer-edge prongs be likely to get caught in something since they stick out?
But my concern is probably not valid because Princess Diana had a similar ring and hers seems to stay together very well.

Please don't flatten them - it really makes the flower shape stand out. I have a number of rings with prongs like this (very similar designs) and I think it makes them look modern.

Thank you everyone for your perspectives! Pricescope is the only place/people who would understand the dilemma over this, or even that there was an option!

Sapphire, I'm sorry you got talked out of what you wanted! I know that I have gone with jewelers recommendations before and regretted that I didn't stand firm with what I wanted. Sorry you're facing the same thing. :nono:

My accent stones should each be just under 20pts each. Just shy of 2 carats total. I don't know the mm measures yet. I'm going to have to get out my calipers when it arrives.

My ruby is 2.04 carats and measures 8.27 x 6.54 x 4.15. Hope that gives you some perspective.

Uppy what did you decide. As you can image I am interested since I just got the baby sister to your ring :-) Also when is ID jewlery shipping it out ( I know you said you were going crazy waiting for it)

Yes, I'm curious as well! What did you decide? to me, it looks perfect as it is! I love the prongs as they are... how do you feel about them now?

How does this work for you? I can't tell really if they are flattened or just worn down. circa 1920

VL, that is gorgeous! But you know how much I love vintage pieces.

I decided to stay with the pointy prongs, as is. Since I went with modern cut brilliants I decided to embrace the classic version of the ring. I do think the size of the diamonds will mitigate the harshness of the pointed prongs. We'll see.

The ring went out this afternoon and is scheduled for delivery on Friday. I'm so excited to see it!! :appl:

Upgradable, beautiful ring! I like both types of prongs, they give a different look (obviously :loopy:) each eye catching.
You'll be happy with that beauty at arms length or close up.... honk, honk, that's the driver behind you at the stop light :wink2:

I can't wait to see it too! Thank God we can always rely on you for excellent photo shoots (note the hopefully successfully co-opting tone? :Up_to_something: )

Tomorrow!!! :appl:

And tomorrow is here. Can't wait for you to receive it and comment. The pictures are also blown up quite a bit so I think the pointiness will be less apparent IRL.

It's on its way. Delivery by 10:30 central time. I won't be able to open it until I get home from work at about 3:00. You can expect a cellphone pic at that time. Wheeeeeeeeeee......

Uppy congrats that your ring will finally be here. You have certainly put in your time waiting but clearly it will be worth it. We all can't wait to see the pictures.

Just one cellphone shot for now. I had to run home for lunch because I couldn't wait!
