GIA Gemstone-Enhancement-and-its-Detection-in-the-2000S paper states that lead glass fillers are durable up to 600 C.

What does that say about garnet and lead glass filling treatment?

Your friend payed 40$ for a 1,89 ct tsavorite. The color is lovely.....

7,5 x 5,8 x 5 mm

Transform this ugly duck ( cutting) in a beautiful swan....

Rough would be more expensive....better a 0,90 ct nice gem than a 1,89 ct.

Are you suggesting a recut? He's happy with how it is now, but I'll tell him the possibility. I thought an acid is used in the cutting or finishing process that could potentially ruin some filler treatments; since there's a possibility its treated I don't think he'll want to risk it. But we'll see.

Yes, recut it....

They can cut out the crack in the pavillion ( imo filled with air) - they use terrible instruments - pincers to pre-shape them.

So the crack is maybe fresh. I don't think they treat a gem like this. A well cut Tsavo around 0,9-1ct with a nice vivid green - you will have much more fun....

I'll tell him to look into it. Thanks Marlow.

Hello everyone, I'm the friend being brought up here. I pestered the seller about the matter and they eventually admitted to me that it was fracture filled. I thanked them for being honest, although I'm annoyed that they lied in the listing. I'm still keeping it because I like it despite its treatment status. I appreciate the discussion here. To people in the market for garnets, be wary.

These idiots destroy their buisness.... :angryfire:

Thank you for your information - I don't understand why they do it and then sell for 40$...

If they cut out the fracture the stone is smaller but untreated - and they get more money....

Hello Elirock and welcome to PS/CS! :wavey:
Sorry about the fracture filling but am glad you still love the tsavorite. $40 is a good price and I would not recut it (will end up not only smaller but the colour will be much lighter, bringing it down from tsavorite to mint garnet, not to mention added cutting fee).

For $40, I wouldn't worry at all about fracture filling. Just keep in mind that if you do set it, please don't ever put it in an ultrasonic cleaner because of the treatment.

Please scroll down to "oilling" and "flash effect"

Interesting is this ...

"Novices may confuse this with the cleavage rainbow seen in unfilled fractures, but in the flash effect, only one color is seen at a time."

I checked two of my Tan Mahenge spinel - I have exactly cleavage rainbows in the pavillion ( will recut them - large enough).

BTW - it is a very good lesson about treatment - easy to understand with a lot of informations.

Interesting link.

Hi LK: I could've sworn you disclosed the vendor in the very beginning of the thread but I can't find it now. Since they admitted fracture filling and did not disclose it in the listing, would you mind sharing with us again the name so we can avoid them? TIA.
