Hi All,
I bought a beautiful 1.02 H VS2 cushion cut diamond and had it set as you can see (this is my giant hand for some perspective). Im a bit nervous if she will like the setting. the diamond sits low in the halo (this is something she wanted) but i am surprised to see the gap between the halo and the diamond is so pronounced.
I need professional and/or womanly feedback.

Its a surprise for her so obviously I cant ask or show, only go on what Ive been able to gather from our ring discussions.

Im considering asking my jeweler to raise the stone and bunch the halo closer to the stone. Id like some opinions!

Thank you

That looks like a problem to me - that's not an airline, that's a stone jammed into a setting that's too big for it. Aside from the aesthetics, I'd be worries about how safe the setting was. Do you have any pictures from different angles (like, underneath, from the side, etc).

Is there any way an "inner halo" could be made?? As is, it's pretty obvious the setting was meant to accommodate a much larger stone. That said, I love the setting and hope you can have your jeweler tweak it somehow to make it work. :))

I have to agree with Circe. It looks like the setting is too big for the stone and I'd be worried about safety. Aside from the safety issue, it just doesn't look good. An airline is one thing, a huge gap is another. I'd go back to the jeweler and see if they have a smaller version of that setting. If they don't, pick another one or ask for a refund and go elsewhere.

Kudos to you for spotting a problem and being proactive about it!

I agree that gap is just too big - it would distract me like crazy, not to mention things could get properly caught in it. I second the thought of a second halo if your jeweler can do it.. pity for the setting is beautiful!

I agree with what the others have said. I don't know if I would trust a jeweler to do the work since they put the stone in an setting that was obviously to big for it. But maybe I just have trust issues.

Sorry, but I would not be happy with that ring. As others have stated, the setting is too large for the stone. I am upset that your jeweler didn't give you better guidance. The setting itself is lovely but your jeweler needs to find the same setting or a similar one in a smaller size. Better yet, if you can get a refund, do so. I guess I too have trust issues!

That's just a train wreck. I don't think there is any reasonable way to make THAT stone fit in THAT setting, and frankly I'm appalled that a jeweler would try to pass that off as acceptable. Take the stone (if you LOVE LOVE LOVE it) and find a setting elsewhere. Better yet, get a refund (if possible) and let the people of PS find you a great rock with a setting that FITS.

Agreed, poor work by the jeweler.

I agree with the comments. I have been looking for quite some time for a halo setting - and that is NOT one that I would choose.

Apparently the jeweler must have set it in a stock setting...which is not the right size for the diamond. Get a refund and start over somewhere else.

Is there a back story on how this came to be? It really does not appear that the setting is well matched for the stone, and I'm wondering if there was a limited selection? It would be great to see that stone in a setting that complimented it...

Yah I agree with everyone else. I wouldn't trust anyone who thought that was acceptable to do competent work.

+1 BIG TIME...

+1. I doubt you can trust this jeweller to do his upmost to provide you with a gorgeous e-ring after selling you this. Good diamond, good setting, but I do not understand the match between the two. I would indeed demand a refund and start over.

Oh no, I would not accept that. I would take my diamond back and run away very quickly from whoever sold you that.

Totally agree with the other posters. That setting is totally inappropriate for the stone. You may want to find a jeweler who is not selling a setting just to sell the setting.

I agree with the above comments, any jeweller that thinks that looks good should not be trusted. Take it back and take the stone elsewhere.

May be it is the angle from which the pic was taken, however, the air gap does not look even to me.

To me as it is, it is not an attractive ring, and would not be happy to accept it.

DK :))

Also JT - where did you get your center stone? From the same jeweler? If so, i'd be asking for independent paperwork to certify that it is what he says it is. I like GIA, though a lot of people here like GIA and AGS. Either one is great. Anything else tends to be a bit 'creative' with its grading system. And if the specs are just 'your jeweler's educated opinion' (ie best guess!) - and he's the same guy who sold you a setting obviously made for a completely different stone - I simply wouldn't believe him.

So...agree with everyone else. Start again elsewhere - including with a new center stone if necessary.

By the way, I think all the prongs are your jeweler's attempt to 'fill the gap'.

ETA - The jeweler won't just be able to 'bunch the stones' closer to the center stone. You're looking at a full remake here.

I also agree. If your jeweler decided that this setting was the best fit for your stone, get a refund and never walk into that store again. If, however, you chose the setting based on the price and/or availability, that's a different story. I would still be concerned if the jeweler didn't inform you of the gap beforehand, though. Either way, there is no way to "fix" that setting. It needs a bigger stone.

I think this is a good example of how halos can go wrong.

OP if you need some suggestions I would go with the following if you are looking for a halo done right. Just in case you don't have anyone else that is local. I would personally not go back to the same jeweler has he/ she obviously thought this was fine.

If you need a stock halo I would check out ID Jewelery Online or James Allen (both have websites and will set your diamond) and are very budget friendly.
