I hope he gets well soon, prayers en route..

A similar thing happened with my grandfather--I swear there are so few good doctors and nurses and those who are excellent are hobbled by the HMO''s or overworked into a pulp. I come from a family of nurses and perfusionists, and the biggest advantage has been learning how to beat medical personnel over the head until they treat you.

So sorry you are sick and cannot get in to see him!

I''ll keep you and your grandpa in my thoughts.

When my grandmother past away I wish she had done it at home while asleep and not at the hospital after three horrible weeks.

Ame, I''m so sorry to hear about your grandfather. *HUGS*

Oh Ame, I am so sorry. Thoughts to your grandpa and hugs to you. His next of kin really needs to be at the hospital demanding some information about their diagnostic and treatment plan. I know it seems like they are doing nothing, but, as someone else said, their hands may be tied by an HMO, or, they may be trying to figure it out.

Last year my 9 year old landed in the hospital with suspected appendicitis. She was in the hospital, in excruciating pain for 5 DAYS before they decided to operate. By the time they wheeled her in she was shaking and crying with so much pain she literally couldn''t move without screaming -- and by the time they got to it her appendix was already rupturing. Why did they wait so long? I don''t know, but I was right there shouting at them to get her in and operate. They had a very angry mother in their face. And my husband tells me I''m a scary person when I''m angry. So I know what you''re going through and how you feel. Your grandfather needs an advocate right at the hospital staying on top of things and demanding answers. Is anyone staying with him?

Oh Ame, I am SO sorry. You are in my thoughts.

Have they run any tests on him? It''s possible that at this point, they haven''t figured it out yet, as long as they are working on the case, they will hopefully know more soon. It can be a frustrating long process.

Keep us updated, I''m thinking of you!

Big hugs and prayers to you and your family. I hope your grandpa has a speedy recovery and they find the source.

So sorry Ame.
** hugs coming your way**

Ame, do you have any more information on your grandfather? He''s in all our thoughts. . .

Oh Ame, you and your grandpa are in my thoughts....

Any new info?

Here is all I know...

They kept him in ICU for the last few days "watching". After my grandpa spoke up and then my dad and my aunt (both married in, not his blood children) went off on the doctor, they did some kind of a non-invasive procedure to "seal" some veins that led to an artery...they watched him all day yesterday after doing that and it seems his hemoglobin has gone up from 7 to 9.3 since then. He has not eaten solid food, only broth, and I guess no craps in that time either. They will move him out of ICU either late tonight, or tomorrow. Depends on his next test for hemoglobin levels. If he gets above 10 they will probably start him on food. They need to watch him eat and make him take some craps and see if anything bursts or bleeds. I doubt we'll know anything for several more days.

So..good news for now. Thanks to you all.

I''m so glad you got some good news ame. Hoping he continues to improve and he''s back on his feet very soon. Hugs to you!!!

glad for the good news, sending some hugs your way........

They are leveled off but not quite up to where we want them. Perfect is 13 and I think the last batch was around a 10. He's eaten and gone to the potty a couple times, so hopefully it's all taken care of. This is apparently a rare condition but something thats controllable and apparently occurs in middle aged men...so I guess that he's only halfway through life at 86. He looks wonderful compared to my last vision of him. My brother came in town to visit and last night he and I went and earlier today we went. He is himself again, thankfully....his doctors are happy with the progress as are my folks and grandma.

Thanks for the prayers, concern and hugs. Hopefully he will be back to normal soon.

ETA:
My artist at work (the girl that works for me) lost her grandpa on Wed night. It's apparently a family joke now but hearing that news made me nervous...the story that makes it funny....apparently he was notoriously cheap and stingy. They checked him into a nursing facility for a 5-day free trial. He wasn't going to live longer than a few weeks anyway so they wanted to try this out before relying on hospice care. He literally died 2 hours before they were going to come collect the 6,000 dollars from him. My coworkers mother said that this is so like her father to just go and kill himself before having to pay for the place. So...a little humor out of that death. My coworker is really holding it together. She went on her potential engagement trip this weekend and almost cancelled bec of his death but her mom and grandma told her that her grandpa would be ticked if she didn't go and wasted all that money.

Glad he is doing much better. And that story while very sad is kind of funny. Reminded me of Nanny. She says her nursing home is getting so expensive they will soon charge her for air. I am glad your coworker went on her trip.

Yea it''s hard to see humor in death most of the time but at least her family knows him and can laugh about it. It still sucks but...ironic.

Oh Ame! I''m sorry I didn''t see this sooner! I''m glad that he''s doing a little bit better and hope he continues to improve!

Something similar happened to my grandfather a few years ago (he passed away in 2003). Was in and out of the hospital a few times for the same thing -- internal bleeding with no known source. I thought the same thing - why can''t they do more? In his case, they had run a bunch of tests but since he wasn''t stable, they couldn''t just "go in" and try to figure out where it is from. If your grandpa was given 17 units, they are also generally supposed to give his body some time to adjust to the new blood -- not that I am trying to make excuses for the docs, just maybe that''s what they were doing and unfortunately, many times the docs don''t convey that to the family.

I agree that unfortunately, the family has to be so pro-active in a patient''s care. I think the elderly get the shaft when they are in the hospital b/c the staff feel like "the person''s old and has had a long life" so they don''t get the same attention that younger patients get. At least this has been my experience with grandparents in and out of the hospital for many years.

I''ll continue to keep your grandpa and you in my prayers.

So glad to hear that he is doing better!

Thanks for the updates, ame. I hope that the vein-sealing does the trick. I will be thinking of you and of him.

Ame: Hugs your way, and enjoy your Grandfather as much as you can.

Kalegh says...

"says her nursing home is getting so expensive they will soon charge her for air." I
