I know a few Moses'' they are all Jewish, because it is still a traditional name, I don’t think that is a bad name. But I could have sworn she was a gentile...hmm.
Her father was Jewish, but I don''t think she was raised with any religion.

haha Caribou that just gave me a fab name for our first child!

Magnavox.

Maybe I''m weird. I like both Apple (seems like the Apple of their eye) & Moses. In the south, odd names abound. It''s rather a Southern Tradition to name your daughter or son a "last name" family name. For example if the mother''s maiden name or grandmothers maiden name is "McAllister" you would be named McAllister George Smith or George McAllister Smith. My hubby''s middle name is a family sir name.

Also, I kinda like Caleb, Ethan, etc - the old biblical names. I have an Old Testament name.

Now, Moon Unit goes a tad far off the deep end.

Q. Why did Gwenyth and Chris name their baby Apple?

A. Because it spent 9 months in cider (inside her)

Alright, I can hear your collective groans...

A good pun is worth waiting for!!! I almost think that it should be a form of child abuse to name a child something so clearly not normal. I also recall the Hirani Princess Tiger Lily name...some of the celeb names could be pet names...I do not think one needs to be too old fashioned or plain either, but some of these names crack me up. I went to school with some weird names that now sound positively normal!! (Summer, Jonas, Kira, and Taryn)...

Yes, in the South a "last as first" or middle name is a tradition. A friend just named her baby "Wesley Copeland" (1st name after dad & middle name is a family surname). I think both "Apple" and "Moses" are old testament.....one being a (possible) fruit in the Garden of Eden
21.gif
....My niece just named her baby "Noah Michael".....I think there is a definite Biblical trend going on!

My brother, mother, and I all have family names as middle names.

My dad's mom tried to be overly involved in their relationship, particularly when my mom was pregnant with me. They were really getting tired of it, and kept telling her that they were going to name me Rufus if I was a boy and Rufusetta if I was a girl, which drove her through the roof. Fortunately, they actually gave me a pretty, completely normal first name. Phew.

Edited to add: I meant to say my mother's maiden name included a family name as a middle name.

I have a friend whose maiden name was Addison so she always thought if she had a daughter she would name her that. She had two boys though (so far...)

I think Moses is a very nice name. I knew someone who''s name was Moses ... and we just called him Mosely, or Mo. It''s a nice Hebrew name, which means ... saved child taken from the water.

I think Apple is ok ... I think it would have been better to name her daughter a type of apple, like: Fuji, Chaceley, Jonagold, molly, or Jenny.

As far as the forbidden fruit, I heard somewhere that they are thinking that the forbidden fruit which Eve ate was a pommegranite, not an apple.

I worked with a lovely lady who name her child after a pear, it actually sounds pretty. "Comice".

I think some of the names I have heard working in Labor and Delivery are absolutely cute, and then there have been a few that raised your eyebrows. One in particular was a baby girl .... Mom named her Strawberry. I guess it wouldn''t have been soooo bad if she had a generic last name like ... Smith. However, the legal last name was Hill!
20.gif
I feel sorry for kids that parents don''t put two and two together ... she is gonna get teased! Older sister''s name is Blueberry, and oldest brother was named Chocolate!
38.gif
I just don''t know!

Koko, so true. I can''t tell you how many people I know with 3 surnames, one for their first, their second and their last. And don''t get me started on the Billy Bobs and Billy Joes.

Mrs D: My dad knew two families growing up and swears that this was their names: One family, last name was Pitts and they had boy/girl twins. The girl, Cherry and the boy Harry. The other had one daughter, their last name was Lear and they name their daughter Crystal Shanda. He would swear to me this was true (it was a long time ago, he would be nearly 80 if he were alive) but I always thought it was a cruel joke. Like calling a kid two names that when added to the surname spells something mean (like Peter Ira Green or PIG)...I agree parents should think some of this through...I feel bad for some of these kids, what is cute, funky or trendy now is not going to sound great on an adult!

I don''t know about Crystal, but Shanda Lear is a real name; she''s the daughter of the Lear jets guy. He apparently did it deliberately and thought it was funny.

How cruel can a parent be. I hope he gets a call in the middle of the night from some guy saying ''Hey, I''m swinging from your Shanda Lear''.

I have never met any of those...maybe some day!

We are a southern family and we do the name children family names that is why my brother is a III and all three girls have family names as well. I like it, but I know it is not for everyone. But then some names like Whitney or Blair (two of the five other people in my nuclear family) are both first names and last names but pretty. I dunno I feel like people bash the southern way about things that are nice...

Anyway saw this in the SC today and thought it would be cute in this thread.

Also in the south we have female Jr.''s!!! And, you can have two or three cousins with the same name as yourself. My middly name is Ann, as is several girl cousins.

BTW, I just thought of my mammaw, her name was Polly Ester. I swear!!! But she was around before the fabric

was invented.

I am sure your Dad was not joking! I really meant it when I said I have seen, even in todays times, the silly and unforgiving names that parents still give their children.
20.gif

I grew up with a girl her initials spelled (T.I.T) and let me tell ya' when she turned 13 and everything just blossomed for her ... and she was cruely tortured not only for her new stature ... but the initails didn't help matters that is for sure! I can remember her saying ... "I can't wait to get married, then my initals won't resemble my chest!" I felt horrible for her most days!

I could go on and on ... People just need to think before they start shelling out names! There are some names that I really like, but I have refrained from naming my children those, and save them for my lil' pets! My lil' beagle's name is Romeo, he is the lil' lover ... and sometimes I am calling "Romeo, Romeo ... where are you?" Sometimes my kids start laughing and start talking with an enlish accent and say "Romeo, Romeo ... where art' thou Romeo" ... I just roll my eyes and think ... I am glad he is a dog!

Some of these are so funny! Swinging from your...daddy will not likely pleased! I knew a girl growing up named Margot and her mother was also Margot. They called one big Margot and the other little Margot...the thing was, big Margot was BIG (large)and not tall, but little Margot was almost 6 feet and thin as a string bean. It just seemed a bit weird to call your daughter your own name. I know someone else who uses her maiden name as all her kids middle names...she has one brother but he has all girl and she wanted to preserve her maiden name. But all three have it. I guess it is better than Geroge Foreman who named all his kids George? Does he have any daughters?!

Mat-I found them in East Tennessee
20.gif

Mrs. Darlin Joy- OMG T.I.T????? What were her parents THINKING?????

diamondfan-Yep, there''s alot of Big Caroline and Little Carolines(just to use a family name)and Caroline Sr. and Jr. around here. My boyfriends middle name is Issac, as is his father, grandfather, and both his brothers middle names. I call them the ''George Formans''. Really now. To think so much of oneself to name ALL your kids after you.
20.gif

Also, in this area, the first and middle name are often used together. Thus the Billy Bobs, the Connie Sues, and my favorite Aunt Johhnie Mae! My ex MIL''s middle name is also Mae so since I love them both dearly my youngest daughters middle name is Mae. That''s what my ex''s side of the family calls her. My ex MIL said ''Don''t give that child that old lady name'' when we told her. I replied that she''s an ''old soul'' anyway, and I couldn''t think of a better suited name for her.

Moon, you''re so right.....my boss''s wife''s name is Betty, as was her mother. There are lots of female "juniors" in the south. Courtney Cox is from Alabama, and she is a junior, named after her mother. Your mawmaw''s name is hysterical! My grandmother''s name was "Geraldine Joan" and my sister was named "Geraldine Louise" after her and another relative. She just goes by "Geri."
35.gif

Koko, it''s a small(southern) world!!!! I have a cousin Geraldine called Geri for short. Her middle name in Victoria and I was named for her.
2.gif

My name is the same as my mother''s, which is the same (albeit spelled differently) as her father''s. People always think this is really bizarre, but while it is a bit unusual, I was the only child and I guess they wanted to carry on the name. Mine is actually a hyphenated name, and growing up, I went by a "nickname" of the second-half of my hyphenated name. (Does that make sense? Like, for instance my grandfather was let''s say Shannin, my mom was Shannon, and I was Shannon-Jennifer and went by Jenny.) But now I just go by my first half of the name, use the whole thing on paperwork, and DEFINITELY won''t be hyphenated my last name after marriage! (I guess I''ll technically be Shannon-Jennifer Maidenname Marriedname but I think I''ll just go with Shannon Marriedname.)

Whew.

Got it

There''s alot of that around here.
