So it seems that NJ is one of only a few states that will not allow an individual below the medicare age to purchase PPO health insurance. We are looking into this now because my DH is over medicare age and was thinking about retiring but as of now that's a no go because there are no options for me to purchase a decent health insurance policy. One that would allow me to go to whomever I want and out of state providers and cover most of my (very expensive) medications.

We have been researching for the past few months and discussing with insurance brokers here and so far nothing.

The fact that I cannot purchase a PPO policy was confirmed by one of my doctors (whom I went to grade school with lol) and he is pretty trustworthy. He practices in Manhattan but lives in NJ. However, just in case he missed something I thought it was worth asking here.

I know this is a very specific question because it can only pertain to those who are 1. under the age of 65 and 2. not getting health insurance through work and 3. live in New Jersey

So I am guessing I will likely get no answers but figured it was worth a try. Thanks for reading and for any input you are willing to share

Would you be able to get insurance using your NY address?

Thanks but not legally unfortunately because though we have a place in NY we are considered full time residents of New Jersey

Can I ask why you are are specifically looking for a PPO plan? Are other types of plans available for purchase? I will be in a similar boat (although I don't live in NJ) when I retire in a year or so before I am 65. I've taken a gander at available plans and aside from the ridiculously high cost of buying a plan privately it seemed like there were a fair number of options to choose from.

New Jersey is difficult so hopefully you won’t be dealing with the loads of issues we do here. Basically to keep it simple it’s because all my physicians are specialists and most out of state. A PPO plan suits my needs. And while cost exorbitant still a better bet for me. By a huge margin. So if I can’t find a PPO plan not sure what we’ll do. It will be many years before I’m 65 and I don’t want my dh working that much longer

New York is no different. We have several friends who found themselves in the same situation upon the working spouse’s retirement. The only option was Obamacare and none of them are happy with their options, the limitations or the cost. I hope you find a solution.

Thanks Rocks. If I have anything new to share I will post it here. Appreciate your input
