:appl: :appl: for all the new kindles!

RS, im keen to see yours, i never noticed an option for built in light and im interested in how it looks/works.

Still no cover for me :(sad i ordered it at the start of july, of course then at the last minute there was the switch to the Kindle 3, so some delay is expected, but i had hoped to have it pretty soon after the kindle 3 shipped....i want to take it all about with me and show it off :praise:

When I receive it, I'll post some pics, BP :)) Estimate is now 09/23-09/28. Meanwhile, I am reading a very strange book called Room, on my Kindle 2. I'm too early into it to form an opinion.

Ooh I was looking at that on Amazon last night. Would love to hear what you think when you're done!

So, how do book prices compare to traditional books?

I think they're cheaper. A bestseller will usually cost between 5 and 8, a few do go up to 12 though...but mostly i think the value is in all the classics that you can download for free onto your Kindle.

As a librarian i have a bit of a thing for 'the book' as object, the smell and all that, but really i think the kindle and devices like it is the way forward for personal reading. Its better for the environment and allows 'the book' to become part of the technology advances that have made our lives increasingly mobile. End rant!

I got the leather cover with built in booklight. I have some mixed feelings about it, but am keeping it for sure. First of all, it's heavy and bulky. It doesn't fit very well in my smaller cute purse, it occupies WAY more space than just a Kindle. It makes it weigh more than a paperback book IMO or maybe I'm just used to holding the Kindle now. It feels kind of weird and floppy, just held in with the two metal connector pegs that fit into it on the left side and no, like, anything else- like I might bend and break the connector pieces and send the Kindle spinning off to it's doom on the floor. I would say it tripled the thickness and easily tripled the weight.

That being said, I absolutely NEED to have something to keep my Kindle safe from me (see aforementioned post about this being, ahem, Kindle # freaking five.) And the bulkiness? Should do that, despite annoying me. It's safe on all sides, good Kindle armor and that's just something I'm going to have to suck up and get used to.

I like the booklight not needing batteries and just running off the Kindle battery. I had one I used in bed, but I realized that the batteries are super expensive (for batteries) and I have had to buy them over and over and over... I might as well have just shelled out for the nice leather cover with battery-less booklight to begin with. It's cute and tucks away well.

I will report back on how the booklight works in terms of draining the battery quicker. With the mega-battery in this new K3 I'm hoping it's no issue. But we'll see.

The light itself is perfect. It faces away from my husband at night, way better than the old light did (it's angled perfectly for someone sleeping on the left side of the bed to not annoy the one on the right). It has a better diffused light, even though it is located in a corner it doesn't make one bright blob in one spot and leave the bottom dark. (Which my current booklight does if the batteries are even slightly low.) I like the light's look a *lot* and I know my husband will love the way it's better focused away from him too.

I'm getting the same arrangement as you, LGK. FWIW, I've been using a cover with my Kindle 2. It appears that the K3 with the book light cover is slightly less in weight than the K2 with the regular cover. I can't wait to get them and see for myself. I found that the Mighty Bright light cast a glare at certain angles, so I'm pleased to read your review of the new book light cover. As an avid reader, I've been a happy convert to the Kindle. The only books I buy in hard copy, now, are those that are picture/color based.

Hey risingsun! Yep, Kindles are *totally* crackarific, but wonderful

The booklight did make a visible dent on the battery after about five hours. It visibly drained a teeny, tiny bit. It was still less draining than just reading on my K2, which, by now, holds a charge for 1-3 days depending on it's temperament. So that was cool. And it really didn't disturb DH at all, it was perfectly focused on my side of the bed. Great placement.

I did discover a gripe about the new K3 design. A small one. The back button's new location is a frequent rest for my thumb once the thing has it's cover on, apparently, and I'm hitting "back" constantly. I wish it was still up on the side. I suppose I'll get used to it soon enough and remember not to rest my thumb there, but gah, I've clicked out of my book about a dozen times.

Gosh the new battery life is amazing, and I really like the Amazon cover. I used it on my flights yesterday and today and hardly any battery drain (and this was about 6-7 hours of reading yesterday and about the same today, and I didn't fully charge it before leaving for my trip).

I've been staying away from this thread because it makes me want one, but for now, my Kindle 2 is more than enough and I don't really see a reason to upgrade to K3. I think I'll wait for K4, which will most likely be cheaper again.

But it looks great!

I just received my K3 two days ago. I love it! I thought that migrating my content from K2 to K3 would take time. It didn't. It was a one click process. The material is on both Kindles. Since I'm regifting my K2 to my DH, he's getting a good deal ;)) Did someone on this thread ask for my opinion on Room? Please let me know.

I looked through a few posts and it was B.E.G. Here is the summary from Amazon:

"Amazon Best of the Month, September 2010: In many ways, Jack is a typical 5-year-old. He likes to read books, watch TV, and play games with his Ma. But Jack is different in a big way--he has lived his entire life in a single room, sharing the tiny space with only his mother and an unnerving nighttime visitor known as Old Nick. For Jack, Room is the only world he knows, but for Ma, it is a prison in which she has tried to craft a normal life for her son. When their insular world suddenly expands beyond the confines of their four walls, the consequences are piercing and extraordinary. Despite its profoundly disturbing premise, Emma Donoghue's Room is rife with moments of hope and beauty, and the dogged determination to live, even in the most desolate circumstances. A stunning and original novel of survival in captivity, readers who enter Room will leave staggered, as though, like Jack, they are seeing the world for the very first time. --Lynette Mong"

In many ways, I found this book both disturbing and disconcerting. The story is told by five year old Jack, with periodic input from his Ma. If you are not in a good space, this novel won't put you in a better one. I do recommend it, but it is not light reading.

I finally got to check it out at Target yesterday. It's definitely sexier! One thing I saw right away that I love is the previous page button on both sides. But I do have to say, I think I like the K2's bigger buttons better! My thumb usually rests squarely on the frame, and on the K3, my thumb edges onto the screen and it seems the thin buttons may annoy me. I'm not upgrading, so it's not an issue, but what do the K2 upgraders think?

On another note, a lot of K2 covers on sale and I'm tempted to get one, but I love my bulky zipped MEdge cover...I abuse my Kindle so it needs all the protection it can get!!

I've been on the fence about it for a year. Then last month started complaining to my hubby how we're running out of book space. Getting another bookcase isn't what I want. Low and behold, last Friday night he gave me the new kindle with 3G and wi-fi.

I LOVE IT! By Saturday, I had already downloaded 4 books, finished reading one two days ago and am halfway through the next. I never read paper books this fast. This little gadget is ingenious. It's light and very easy on the eyes. In fact I think that's why I'm reading as fast as I am, no eye strain like I'd get with regular books. It has to be my favorite electronic device ever!

I can kick myself for not getting it sooner.
For those of you who are avid readers, there's no reason not to at least try it.

I was anti-ebooks for awhile and to be honest I can't put my finger on exactly why. My boyfriend saw one on our place ride home from vacation and thought I would like it and look into it. After reading this thread and doing my own research, I decided I want one! Definitely going on the wish list

Yay another convert!!! :appl: :appl: :)

TGal, it's aesthetically MUCH nicer isn't it? I actually like the smaller buttons, but you know, what I don't like is that it doesn't have a row of numbers buttons. I like to go back to places and to type in the numeral locations, I have to go through Symbols now. Boo. But the smaller buttons don't bother me, and like you, I like the previous page button being on the right hand side now too (although it took me a while to get used to - I kept hitting that when I meant to hit Home). And the quieter clicks are a plus.

I never figured out how to use the locations...is there a trick? I have no idea how it works and it's a pain to get where I wanna go.

The clicks are quieter, but I must click quietly on my K2...I don't see a huge difference.

I wish there was a trick! Unfortunately, it just goes back to me memorizing the location number and punching it in. I don't use it often overall, so it doesn't annoy me that much, but I use it often enough I guess where it's irritating, if that makes sense.

I ordered my Mom one of the new Kindles (the graphite color) as an early-birthday-hooray-you're-done-with-chemo! present, and she just received it on Tuesday evening. She loves it so far! I have the 2nd Generation Kindle, which I absolutely love, and I have read about 60 books on it in the 7.5 months I've owned it. We were able to connect my mom's new Kindle to my Amazon account, so she now has access to all the books I downloaded. It was like giving her a mini-library, which hopefully will provide plenty of entertainment for her in the next few weeks while she goes through radiation.

I am excited to check out the new Kindle when I see her next. I don't think I'll be trading up, but it seems really neat. A flight attendant on my plane last weekend showed me his new Kindle, and the contrast looked amazing. It seemed like it would be easier to read in low light, and I loved how small and light it was. Hopefully my mom will grow to adore hers as much as I do mine!

Anyone else have trouble with the 3G wireless on their new Kindle? My aunt had to return hers today after almost two weeks of messing around on the phone with their tech support. Apparently they were dispached before the software was uploaded properly or something like that. It may have been a localised issue though, with just one batch or something.
