new mahenge, comparison pics to my other ones for fun...

So, I bought another mahenge. All of mine are small...my first pair is 4.45 mm Portuguese cut rounds; my second one was an upgrade in color/saturation and is a Portuguese round at .85 cts. I bought this one bc I got a message from my favorite gem dealer/jeweler Yvonne Raley that she had a new parcel, and that it was old material, which was very exciting for me to hear. This one was much much pricier than what I've paid for my others. It was cut from a huge piece of rough that was found in 2007, when the colors coming out were still darker stuff.

This one isn't much bigger than my round at .88 cts, it's 6 x 5 mm. I think the color is quite beautiful though, and I've taken loads of pics just for fun, to show how it compares to my less saturated mahenges. I actually think this one is the hardest to photograph, it's the first mahenge I've seen that I think extinction is actually a bit of a problem with. But I'm not nearly as familiar with cushion cuts as I am with rounds, so I'm not as good at evaluating them.

Firstly, pics of it alone...(all pics taken indirect sunlight)

***edited, I put the wrong mm on the new one in here...it's actually 6 x 5 mm, I had said 7 x 5, I was mixing it up with my tsavorite (it's pictured later).

Here are some neat pics of it next to my 3 red Burma spinels. You can very clearly see the cutting issues in these pics that the Burma reds have; I bought them anyway bc they were very cheap for the material, and even thought they are small, I'm thinking of possibly trying recuts on them. I bought them mainly to see the color in person. I think it's very neat to compare this mahenge to the red Burmas... (the mahenge is top left in all 3 photos).

Now some comparison pics to my other mahenges. These were harder to take since the other gems are set in rings.

And a few other pics just for fun. Next to my rectangular cushion tsavorite, which is 1.02 cts I think (it might be 1.04, can't remember for sure), and one of my three fav loose gems right now, the other is my little blue sapphire trillion, 6 mm.

That's it for now, hope you all enjoy the pics...I'm really enjoying the gem :) It's very fun for me to get to see the graduation of color and saturation in person, in the mahenge gems. I can't afford the nicer material in larger sizes which is why all of mine are smaller, but I was happy to get this one. Not sure if I'll set it or not, I've really been having fun collecting loose gems lately.

Really enjoyed looking at those pictures. It was really interesting seeing the progression of colours you've had under the title of mahenge spinel. I personally don't know what one exactly is, but your latest gem seems to be a very specific type of colour.
Your other gems are absolutely stunning also. Perfect examples to my eye and i am so jealous of the colour of that sapphire. The shape too. The three of them take a really lovely picture together. Your mahenge is so saturated they almost look like the three primaries of light together!

Gorgeous pictures and stones Katharath! Nice to see you here! :) My friend received the cc garnet ring!

Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate hearing that about the ring too - I've been wondering if she got it yet and what she thought of it after seeing it in person. She and I did a lot of back and forth convo-ing and she is so sweet, I really hope she likes the ring :). And thanks for your nice comments, nice to "meet" you!

I'm glad you liked the pics! I also love the last pic of the three gems together - this mahenge is closer to red than pink I think, and while my favorite gem colors are pinks, blues, and greens, this one is close enough to make me very happy. Thanks for the kind words :)

Ha ha, it's me, Sowmya! What I meant was that my friend received the package in the US. I can't wait to see it with my own eyes though! :appl:

LOL!! Omg, sorry Sowmya!! I have no idea why I assumed it but I just thought it was your friend posting, the one I mailed your package to! I guess that's probably weird that I thought that, I don't know why I didn't get that it was you. I feel so silly, lol.

Anyway I'm also happy to see you here, I hope you get your ring soon... I've been hoping to hear from you about it :)

I love the mahenge, tsav and sapphire combo! I would put those in a yellow gold gemstone by the yard bracelet (maybe add one diamond for fun?) so I could stare at them all day long. Spectacular colors!

Hmmm....Rosebloom, I think I like that idea! Maybe put the sapphire in the middle? The tsav is bigger than the mahenge but not much bigger, it would have a bit of symmetry that way. I need to think about that, I actually really like that suggestion. It would be colorful and fun, and definitely different. Thanks for the idea!

That's ok, small world! I looked through your other posts and I love so much of your jewelry, especially your prong set spinel ring and the spinel and opal necklace. I will ask Yvonne about a spinel chain. Wow! I also love the cc garnet ring pics and they made my day! I still didn't see a chip - it looks amazing!

I love your new spinel!

Thank you so much for posting those pics - your new spinel is gorgeous and the comparison pics are really interesting! I'm new to CSs but I can definitely see the differences...

The last pic with your sapphire and tsavorite is my favourite though - such a vivid trio :sun:

Thanks so much Sowmya :). Yes, Yvonne has done almost all of my favorite pieces. She usually has a lot of affordable but smaller, pretty gems, which is perfect for me. Glad you enjoyed my other threads and pics, it definitely sounds like we have very similar taste.

I love that pic too, the colors are so pretty...I do think in all honesty that the tsavorite is a bit less saturated than the sapphire and the spinel. But, they are similar in size (all are quite close in carat weight, ranging just at or slightly under one carat). So they look neat together to me too.

Glad you're starting to enjoy CSs :) (I hardly post anywhere BUT CS; I'm trying to broaden my horizons a bit. I've been eyeing some of the other boards here on PS. I only collect CS though).

Thank you! Is that a spinel in your avatar? It's a beautiful gem, regardless.

That was my exact thought too - what an AWESOME CSBTY bracelet that would make, in YG!! Ah, Rosebloom - great minds think alike! lol!

The colours in that photo are just stunning- perfectly matched saturations - that really WOULD be an outstanding bracelet... do you have anything in a strong yellow? hmmm.... innnnnnnteresting idea..... :naughty:

Enerchi - I actually do have a yellow that might work. It's not a strong yellow though so I'm not sure. I would normally dismiss it out of hand - it is a pale lemony Mali. BUT it has two things going for it: it's extremely glowy, like kind of insanely glowy, so it has a lot of presence. Plus it is the right size at 6.5 mm round, it's just a bit bigger than the others. It's a very well cut Portuguese and its beautiful, I think. As far as just being a beautiful gem, I think it matches the others. And it might be good to throw a round into the mix, lol. Maybe I'll post pics later. It's in one of my other threads right now if someone really wanted to see it, the last one before this, I think.

I have a couple of chrysos right at 1 ct too, but neither is cut as well as the Mali. One is a pretty yellow, darker than the Mali, but it has a small window.

I really am considering this idea, I like it a lot.

IT could look AMAZING!! I'm excited to see your pics!!

Can you take pics w all of your yellow options? Do you have a YG chain as well? perhaps you could lay the stones along that, for effect.

I could TOTALLY see this bezelled in high carat YG!! DanielM from etsy, maybe? He does do great work!

I will definitely post more pics later today. I'll get pics of all my yellows (which truly is just a few), with some gold chain pics too. It will be fun :)

Oh I'm so excited!! You're making my dream bracelet! I can't wait to see your pics.

And yes, Enerchi, great minds do think alike. And so do we! :)

I like them all, but the new one sort of reminds me of a ruby. Very nice!

A DBTY necklace or bracelet in yellow gold is a fabulous idea. No worry for a Mali or tsav in a necklace but more care is required for a bracelet. I like the colour combo thus far and hope to see more pics.

Ok everyone, I'm back :) Thanks you all for the nice comments in the meantime.

Chrono - I did want to mention that as far as the garnets being set in a bracelet - I'm very easy on my jewelry. I have several garnet rings that I wear quite a lot, but I take them off for EVERYTHING, I have little ring bowls sitting in practically every room in my house in case I need to take my jewelry off, lol. I haven't had any issues so far. As long as the gems survived the setting process I think they'd be ok.

About pics...

First off I should say that I took pics of my yellows, and pics of them with the gem "trio". Of the yellows I already have, the only yellow I would even consider setting with these gems is the Mali - I don't like the chrysos with this combo and frankly I don't think they're nice enough or yellow enough for this project. I think the Mali for me is a "maybe", but I still took pics for everyone to get their opinions. I also took pics of the trio with my little canary yellow untreated sapphires. They're only 3.5 mm but they are the yellow color I think I would want for this project, which would mean I'd have to hunt down another gem. So, lots of pics to follow...
First set is the yellows I have (top one is a Mali, the middle left is a chryso, middle right is THE mali that's the maybe, and the bottom is another chryso). Then a couple of pics with the chrysos and the trio, just for comparison.

Edited- I described the wrong order of the gems in the pics, sorry

Next pics are the Mali round with the trio. It's maybe a bit too large, and the yellow is very pale and doesn't show well in pics. It is this very pale lemon yellow. But so glowy! This is low indirect sunlight.
