Hey all! I jumped in with both feet and got my first Mahenge (I will NOT admit to being easily influenced by posters on PS, but I can't seem to stop salivating over all the pretties owned by all of you. Do you all admit to being enablers?)

Anyway, here it is, it is a 1.24 cts Mahenge Spinel, 7.9x5.5x4.3 from Beau-wy on ebay. He is a poster here as well. I do have to admit that I like sizable/large gems, so it will be interesting finding a setting for this stone. Here is where.... I need HELP! How do I set this: in a halo? Rose gold? yellow? white? high? or low setting? Any suggestions would be quite welcome. SHOW ME SOME SETTINGS.... please

I also posted the vendor's photos and mine in the 'Vendor pictures and owner pictures of PS stones' thread. Here it is:

High karat yellow gold, and if you want to make it look more sizable, then I would get a similar setting to what you set your emerald pear in. Tiny melee and lots of gold halo. HTH. I'm predictable, I know, but I really do think halos make stones look sizable.

Beautiful stone.

Hi TL - I did the chain puddle test - where you put your gold chains in a little circle and sit the stone in the center to see what color gold looks best. I don't know about anyone else, but I find I do this all the time. I am agreeing with you that high carat Yellow gold seems to look best with this stone. The pink gold just seemed to swallow the color of the stone. I thought it looked nice with the white gold, but maybe a little too stark. The yellow seemed to bring out the warmth of the stone. I do LOVE the setting from my emerald, but.... something unique and different would be nice. It definitely has to have a halo, and I think I'd like to see it set high.

Very pretty! I like mine in white gold, but I can see it in yellow gold as well. I second TL that a halo will help. Maybe even a double halo.

Re: New Mahenge - seeking help in setting a smaller stone -i

I am doing mine in yellow gold. I wanted white metal, and it was a long and agonizing decision, but my mother stepped in when I was angsting about it and showed me a bunch of paintings at the museum that had a pink and gold theme (I think they were from the renaissance? I don't remember). And they were all very pretty so that swayed me.

I love pears in halos - for something different you could do a metal halo with engraving, instead of a diamond halo.

Yeah, pink gold is definitely out. I was very much leaning toward yellow gold, and then I checked out Atenaworth's ring in WG, and now I'm wavering. As to an etched halo.... but...but I LOVE diamonds, and I've never seen an etched halo. Any examples?

Definitely high karat yellow gold, but not bezeled. I envision it prong set but with some design that makes it look bigger than it really is.

I vote white gold with a halo (maybe a double halo?). Here is my little mahenge, which is 0.60 ct and measures 4.8 x 4.9 mm:

Stargurl78 - That is simply stunning on you. With hands as pretty as yours, a smaller stone looks gorgeous. And that looks SOOO nice in the white gold, that I almost changed my mind this weekend on the 18k yellow setting I ordered. But then, I figured, I'll let this one go in yellow gold... which only means I'll have to find another great deal on a Mahenge and then set that one in white gold! :naughty:

(I mean, really, you had me with a white dish this weekend, with three puddles of gold colored chain on it, in front of a window with sunlight, sitting the stone on each and moving it in all directions, trying to make up my mind. I must have looked like a  :loopy: person)

So I did go ahead and pick out a simple double halo setting in 18K yellow gold, but I won't have it for about 2 weeks since I still have to send them the stone, and the setting has to be made, etc. But I'll be sure to post it when it comes.

Thanks Jeweljunke, you are too nice! My finger size is a 4.25 so I can get away with the little stones  I'm sure your stone will look fantastic in yellow gold. I never used to like yellow gold but its really starting to grow on me. Can't wait to see pics once its finished!!

And I had to laugh at the visual of you this weekend  Whenever I'm looking at gems on my hands in front of the window, or taking pics outside, I wonder if the neighbors are looking at me like I'm nuts!

Re: New Mahenge - seeking help in setting a smaller stone -i

Well I finally have the ring back. They did a great job. I have not taken my own photos yet. I'm expecting a new camera so I'll probably wait until I get it to play with the ring and camera. Meanwhile, here are a couple of the setting vendor's photos. For some reason their photos make the stone look pinker than it actually is IRL. My previous photos of just the stone are more representative of the color of the stone. I am glad I took the advice of TL as to the halo and small melee and Stargurl78 was right there as to the double halo. I don't wear a teenie tiny ring size and the ring looks and feels perfect. Takes up more finger real estate than I thought it would. The tiny diamonds sparkle like crazy, and I went for the 18k yg.
