I got this via email from Uli a few days back, and thought I'd post it so we could discuss the odd $100,000 stone

http://www.osirisgems.com/infomailjanuary2013.html

Anybody have any idea why the Mahenge ruby $100K?

Here's his description;

Mahenge Ruby

This is the most unusual gem I have ever faceted. The rough of this beauty accompanied me at my faceting machine for some years. The rough weight was slightly under 60 cts. and something like this doesn´t happens so often. The shape was really odd and had parts that had to be cut off for some extra tinies. The rough showed some open tubes and it was possible to remove 3 of these tubes while faceting, one is visible at half past 9 (but nearly invisible for the naked eye). This ruby shows one of the heaviest fluorescence I have ever seen in rubies (pinkish-orange). This is typical for gems from the Mahenge-region after these minerals generally have no iron-content. This material was found in the 60ies near the village Mbaranbanga and are normally treated with flux/borax but this one hasn´t undergone that cruel treatment and is completely natural. There is a colourshift effect visible (not enough to call it colourchange, only a light shifting). The better colour shows incandescent light while fluorescent light as well as daylight turns the colour more to a cold pink. The colour in these 4 pics are the incandescent colours.
Not necessary to mention that I gave many hours to facet this beauty to the highest meetpoint accuracy and the best mirror-like polish. Click at the pics to enlarge it and see the structures that causes the silk, it´s a kind of lamellar/tubular with perfectly clear intermediate spaces.
14.17 cts., 14.0 x 9.2 mm
$ 100,000.-

pink translucent sapphire, with decimal in wrong place.

My first guess is the same as VapidLapid. Wrong decimal point. Does Germany use decimal points or commas? Here, we use commas and I can see myself using the wrong sign since I use commas on a day-to-day basis, period on the internet and a coin toss on software.

What puzzled me most is that he calls the stone a ruby, even though it has the typical Mahenge spinel look.

That's interesting to see! Would that really be the price... :o

But I agree with the posters above that the decimal could be in the wrong place.
Here in Europe the commas are often used to indicate Euro cents.

Even not knowing much, I would never have guessed that was a ruby. It is an intriguing stone though. Not worth $100K, but interesting.

How strange! Well, it's pink so debatable whether it's a Ruby! It's large at 14ct but the clarity is  I'm guessing it's an interesting gem but the comma has got to be in the wrong place. Actually even if it is, surely this wouldn't be $10k???? Maybe $1k????

Exactly.
I would buy it for 1k.
I would not buy it at 10k
Also odd is that all the other stones in the offering come in between $50. and $2k. Am I the only one unimpressed by the claim of a few hours invested cutting the stone? Is that unusual? <-rhetorical question, please do not answer it.

I know you said not to answer it but you know what I thought exactly the same thing! I wonder if the internal silk caused the hours of cutting to avoid the surface being pitted - it does say it was original 60ct? The cutting seems far from exceptional (whereas his other cuts are beautiful) so this is the only thing I can think of!

Well, we're wrong. That is the price.

I emailed Uli, and he replied that this is indeed the intended price. I suspect it has something going for it in RL that doesn't come across in a photo? Magic powers maybe? Time travel? I'm not trying to be mean, I guess it's just so puzzling . . .

Uli replied "It´s a highly translucent gem with nice internal glowing and even silky structure. Additionally it is an absolutely untreated gem of a impressive size. But I´m willing to discus about the price, no question."

It reminds me of when I am asked to quote a project and I just don't want to do it. So I quote an outrageous price, that will persuade me beyond the project's issues (idiot client, excessive restrictions, etc.). Maybe Uli just really doesn't want to sell it. He did say it was hanging around for many years, maybe he's grown attached to it.

He does cut some dazzling stuff, though.

I wish I had funds, I would have gotten that little $200 ruby on the page. I needz more rubies.

So we are big soccer fans in our house and recently heard that Gerard Pique tweeted that his baby boy had been born - it turns out it was the Spanish equivalent of April Fools Day. Could this be something like that? Where is Uli located?

Sorry - cross posted.

Minoux- I don't think that's it, he sent the email with the link on the 3rd, and responded to my email question today. I think he's German.

It's weird, isn't it?

$100K

Stunned into silence.

Puzzling. He has a special feeling for it, apparently, though it doesn't look ruby-ish. I wonder what it will eventually sell for, pure nosy curiosity. Wish I had the funds for the heliodor.

Zauberstein

My mouth dropped at that Oregon Fire Opal.. But it has been sold. That is some orange color!

Did I mention that I love orange roses?

Not sure why that Mahenge Ruby is for $100,000. It's pretty...

Two trendy buzwords, neither of which seems to apply here, without which the price would be more thaigemstore than pala.

He did say this in the description:

Is that what we're missing? He did say the photos are incandescent . . .

Jeez - wash your mouth out guys!

I actually don't think we're missing anything. I think our rose coloured goggles have been put aside tonight and borrowed by Uli. Bless him.

Have I inadvertently fallen into the German version of PS? Ernstlich? Werde ich verrückt? Oh oh, it's happening to me too now.

In honor of, Uli, we should spent the rest of the day using, commas inappropriately

Ha, ha, ha, what a good, idea!

I must need my eyes checked; the colour, clarity and pricing just doesn't make sense to me either and it's way too early in the day for me to Google translate anything.

That stone looks super silky/sleepy in all the pictures, and I thought that decreased pricing?
