Newbie looking at rubies

The price is within the range of normal, but make sure you like the color and do not mind the window. The flip side to having such a large face-up size is the window. The color is also a bit purplish and dark for my liking.

The description is inaccurate, not heat only but heat with residue = flux heated.

I agree that I don't like the description. How can the seller claim "heat only" if there are minor residues? that makes me think it was flux heated, which is TOTALLY different than "heat only" IMHO.

To be fair, I've heard someone else on these forums claim that minor residues could be due to foreign particles getting in during the cutting process. I think any clarity folders should be emphasized more by GIA.

But I can't be completely sure of these things so my personal preference would be to see a lab report that does not mention any residues.

Good to know! I didn't realize it could mean anythinf else. But yeah, I'd still be wary.

I think I need some more training on spotting windows. I didn’t see it until you pointed it out. Thanks everyone for the info. I also don’t care for the color much in the pic of it on the hand. Going to pass on this one... the search continues.

Yes, the minor residue could be a concern. Some miners, even out in the middle of nowhere are “treating” the rubies ie using flux and Beryllium additives so you have to be cautious.
With that listing, the 3rd photo in doesn’t match the rest (different gem), seller mistake I presume but still.
More concerning to me anyway is that it also looks to have a few feather inclusions that transverse the ruby, you’d need to check these in person in case any are surface reaching. They could potentially cause problems with structural integrity ie the gem crack while setting of if accidentally “whacked”.
