Newbie question about GIA cert.

I was wondering if you recommend buying a diamond with a GIA certification that doesn''t list the cut. I realize that some of these certs don''t list the pavilion and crown measurements so should I just omit these ones from my search? Thanks for your help.

Hi Shep!

If the vendor can run a scan such as Sarin on the stone to get the cut proportions then you can include these stones definitely. GIA began cut grading early in 2006 so seeing the older reports without cut grades is getting more unusual now.

Those round brilliant graded after mid 2005 can be without cut grade but their crown and pavilion angles are available through GIA report check.

I would personally prefer a diamond with a newer cert than that. With a cert that is 4 years old I would worry that in the interim some damage could have occurred to the diamond that would depreciate its value (e.g. a small chip that changes its clarity), and so I would in essence be overpaying. An appraisal would alleviate this concern, but with so many diamonds out there I don''t see the reason to rely on older certs.

Not sure how much of a newbie question this is, but is this for a round or some other shape? Fancy shape reports don''t have the full dimensions and cut grade.
