Hello PSers!

I've been lurking here for a couple months, but this is my first post. I'm researching ideas for a non-traditional engagement ring, and have recently started looking at colored stones. I absolutely LOVE heart shaped stones (yes, I know, quirky and not too popular!) and I really adore them when they are bezel set. Following a link in another thread I found here led me to this setting:

http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/Sapphires/Mountings/Rings/Solitaire/stoneid=JS682PT

and then I found this stone:

http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/Sapphires/Mountings/Rings/Solitaire/stoneid=JS682PT#&&KMvT31l7n8L1iKpyKnJFVWYEWNT2H+3kahWzHdPzzuIWQ4ZP3sULrNRE8s/6NboQA5BhfiOJAe5EcFoD4HlAxX8UpR0/Y51K6lZSldy0kkXwVpXVH1qY92DXtmpRAPA2NGpI1Q==

Further searching through this forum has shown a lot of discontent with this vendor, although mostly from a few years back. Can anyone tell me if they seem to be more reputable now, or suggest another more suitable vendor?

Thanks in advance for any advice... this is a WONDERFUL resource! You all ROCK!! (Pun intended!)

Pat --

Welcome to PS. Hope you stick around!

The cut on that stone is wonky -- the culet is off center & table tilted. You won't get good light return -- sparkle & color -- because the angles are, ahem, screwy. It looks a little like it melted on a hot day. Color's barely pink & is not consistent throughout the stone -- look at the side views. I don't think this one is a good bet at all.

Are you looking for a pink sapphire or is another color ok, or another type of stone? What is your budget? How important is treatment to you?

Here are other examples -- some are blue but they give you an idea of what's out there & cost.

Pink: (Can't tell if I'm seeing a window or not in this pic; would have to ask for more photos.) http://www.gemfix.com/sapphire_pink.html

I'm so glad someone is partial to hearts because I saw the electric blue heart jewelfreak linked and loved it! I've seen some settings where hearts are used as side stones and interested in seeing ideas for your ring Past. Welcome. Its a fun community and rather knowledgeable

Hi Laurie!

Thank you for the warm welcome and all the info! I am partial to sapphires, and to pink... but am open to other colors and stones, as long as they are hearts! That electric blue you posted is beautiful, as is the purple... love that bright pink too, but hoping for something a bit bigger, > than 1.5 ct hopefully. Our budget is probably ~$2500 or possibly a bit more. I don't really care for yellows and oranges, but pinks, purples, blues and greens are all good! As for treatment... I really don't know anything about that yet... I still have much to learn here!

Thanks again for all the suggestions... I am like a kid in a candy store :lickout: loving looking at them all!

Hi Wordie!

Glad to find another heart lover! And I think our doggies are twins from other mothers... when I saw yours I had to go into my profile and add a pic of my Boomer... OMG they look so much alike!

I can see I will be spending a LOT of fun times on here!

The pink you linked to has terrible cut issues and I'm not even super particular about cutting. The uneven colouration makes it look splotchy as well. Other than the shape, what made this one stand out to you? Was it the size? The price? The pale colour? I take it that you aren't fussed on treatment based on this sapphire.

Hi Chrono,

Since I'm brand new to this, I didn't really see how poor the cut was... that's why I'm so happy to have all of you to help educate me about it! I was attracted to the size, and price yes, and I even like the pale color... but I do see how it is uneven and not a good choice. I'm really just beginning my search and looking for all heart shaped suggestions in the ~$2500 range.

Do you think the setting was any good? I love bezel setting for a heart, and I liked that it was plain, simple and low-set. Thanks again for all your help!

Pat

I would hold off the setting for now. That's the easy part compared to trying to find the right stone. Some hearts are fatter than others too so it'll need to be custom. This design is easy enough for any vendor to duplicate.

I agree about the cut on the one you posted - also I would steer clear of NSC. Unfortunately their business practices continue to be shoddy so they are not a company many of us would recommend.

I also agree with Chrono about holding off on getting the setting for now! Hearts can be fat or thin and actually getting one that fits a standard setting can be a challenge.

I have a huge number of heart shaped gems - not because I went out of my way to buy them but it just happened that way! The good news is that they are usually cheaper than other shapes! :naughty:

Here's one for your review because I like going on "quests"..........it is spinel and not real big, but I was struck by the elongated heart shape which I liked and don't recall seeing all that often. Spinel has MOHS of 8 so can be used for daily rings. I've not used this vendor so can't speak to that aspect. Good Luck!

and another lighter and bigger one. Not sure about the flat color in the middle--a reflection, window, ??? http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?-13685010

You might want to check out this vendor if you haven't already.

Thank you all so much for all the beautiful suggestions! Now I find myself drooling over this one (and it's from a PS "approved" Ebay vendor)

Much better than my first link, right?! :twirl:

This one actually has a lot of cut issues and will look almost colourless in the centre I suspect. Also the cleft of the heart is not well defined.

Did you look at the one from Multicolour posted above? It has a tiny window but the colour is lovely. The culet is slightly off centre but I suspect this won't be noticeable once set (unless you're a complete symmetry freak as I am)!!! Knowing the vendor's photos, I think this will be slightly less vibrant and quite a lovely shade of baby pink rather than the bright pink you see in this photo. I believe Multicolour will sometimes take videos of stones if you contact them. This would be my choice (and the vendor is a great guy to work with).

Tan's heart is not a stone I would recommend. The heart shape isn't quite a heart, it looks more like a squashed pear with a tiny notch that is barely there. The colour is far from saturated as stated, looking a cold pink rather than a soft pink.

Thanks for your continued guidance! I'm glad you confirmed that Multicolour is a good vendor, they have lots of beautiful choices!
