do you know what he wants?

I WISH he wanted a HOT TUB...

My father is *the* most impossible person to shop for and flat out tells us that we shouldn''t waste our time/$$ on a gift. Every year we go through the same ritual of spending the money just to return whatever it is. When he wants something, he buys it...however, this year I think we have a winner
1.gif
A dvd recorder (I think that''s the right term at least, digital version of a VCR) My uncle was telling us about his, and I could tell my dad was interested. My dad went shopping with my brother and was about to buy himself one, but my brother somehow talked him out of it...so we got him one!

My dad is really difficult to buy gifts for, too. I usually end up buying him gift certificates to his favorite restaraunts. He loves to go out to eat, and I make sure to buy him several from a variety of different restaurants. That way, he always has a choice. My sister does the same thing. Lots of times we have to conspire so that we don''t end up buying him certificates to the same places. I also in the past have given him gift subscriptions for magazines. He likes Reader''s Digest and Birds and Blooms that I know of.

This year it will probably be more gift certificates...unless I can convince him that he wants a HOT TUB...hehehe

Well, I think he secretly wants one, he just won''t be able to admit it until he has one and realizes what he''s been missing out on!

We''ve also gone the gift card route, usually a combo of restaurants & movie passes.

I hope your dad likes his DVD recorder. My sister gave my dad one of those for his BD a last year and he really likes it. He says it''s much simpler to operate than a VCR. DVD''s take up a lot less space than VHS tapes, too. I think you hit upon a winner of a gift!

My Daddy, whom I love very very much is hard to shop for becuase he doesnt want anything. So sine I know how much he loves planes I got him year long magazine subscriptions to Flying and Twin and Turbine magazines. I am thinking I will find out from my mother how much our AOPA fees are and pay those too or if it is too much I will prolly do that for his birthday. He always says he doesnt want anything so I can not just ask so I try and do something that is not too expensive (since it reality my spending money comes from him) but shows that I thought about it and that I love him.

Oh, I was confused...lol! I don''t know if my dad secretly wants one or not. But I, on the other hand, NOT so secretly want one. I was hoping that dad would say that he wants one, but has no room for one at his house and would I buy him one and put it at MY house! But that''s just wishful thinking.

I still think you are getting YOUR dad a great gift, I''m sure he''ll LOVE it.

a donation to Larkin Street in SF in his name. i''ve been doing this for some years now. not all kids are as fortunate as i am so i honor him by donating to a group that assists these kids.

i do the same for mothers day for the same reason.

peace, movie zombie

He wants the Sopranos (seasons 1-5). I might get him some clothes too, he sure needs them! Off to do some on-line shopping.

Nothing! Being a dad to three dogs doesn''t justify getting a father''s day gift!

My mama does all of my shopping for my dad and step-dad and grandfather.

My dad is content with a card and a phone call. He is really low maintenance, so if I am feeling like spoiling him, I get him a gift card to Academy and he goes crazy with fishing equipment.

I was going to get my dad something having to do with fishing, but all I could find were rubber worms. I didn''t think that would be a very nice gift, so that''s when I called my mama for help.

a flaming bag of dog poop! and that''s more than he deserves!

MMM - my future FIL is not a nice man. However, after years of silence he and my bf are slowly talking again. His reasoning? Jacksass or not, he's my dad. Well, since I was picking up my father's day card he asked if I could pick one for him, too so we could get it in the mail.

card choices at the local drug store

I'm so lucky to have a father like you......nope
You've always put family first......nope
If every father was like you the world would be......unless this is a sarcastic card, nope
I know I don't tell you everyday how much I love you..........there's a reason for that jackass
I hope to someday be as good of a father......nope
You've always given good advice...........uhhhhh nope
You always believed in me........good grief

The one I got says Happy Father's Day on the outside and inside says - hope you enjoy your day or something stupid like that
2.gif

ROLLING ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING. I go through the same process!!!!
ALthough I''m so sick of being the nice one. I''ve sent cards, given Xmas gifts, and I get pooped on. So I''m done.

There aren''t enough cards out there that just say "happy fahter''s day" and skip all of that other crap LOL

Same here, but for my mother instead. Sometimes I wonder why some people even become parents.

same here, when i told him i was going to get marry, the first words that came out of his mouth was not congrats but,"i don''t have any money" i wasn''t even asking for money.in old chinese tradition the groom''s parent usually pays for the wedding.but.....i still give him $100 cash every yr for father''s day and his b-day.

ugh, my dad is so hard to shop for! The problem is, he works during the day as a systems analyst for Worldcom ( oh sorry, right, they don''t exist anymore thanks to a**hole top executives! MCI, my bad...), then he goes and meets my stepmom at the laundromat they own and closes that store. My father literally works almost 75 hours a week
6.gif
! Needless to say, he has about zero time to enjoy anything in life ( I don''t agree with this, I say they sell their big house and downsize their lifestyle so they can actually enjoy life). Soooo, i''m always stumped.

However, my dad, like myself, is a HUGE U2 fan. We are both pretty obsessed with anything U2 related. So I picked him up a copy of the book " Bono, In conversation" by Michka Assayas. I''m hoping he''ll find a few spare moments to read it!

Mother''s day is the rough one for me! I have 3 mothers plus a grandmother: my mom, my stepmom, my MIL! That''s an expensive holiday!

I am very, very lucky and I know it. I absolutely adore my father. Everyone adores my father. He is just one of those special, selfless, modest, loving souls. Only also filled with energy. A St. Francis type. Not being at all materialistic, he never wants anything (of course). I know he loves music, however, so I often try to get something that will enable him to enjoy more music or to enjoy music in more places or whatever!

I had gotten my parents a BOSE stereo system for their bedroom so that they could fall asleep listening to music. Once in a while I find a piece of classical music my father doesn't know (but that's rare). He especially loves string quartets.

Well...this year I got him an iPod and have managed it for him. He still exercises daily (at 84) as well as working daily!!!! He used to walk with a Walkman. He absolutely *LOVES* his iPod, constantly raves about the *QUALITY* of the sound. I keep his library on *MY* computer and add to it whenever he visits.

Deborah, who can never find a card LOVING enough for her dad :-)

The father I''m purchasing for is my husband - I have NO idea what I''m getting him and only have a few days to figure this out!!!

My mom is bad too. . .she didn''t plan to be a parent though and is sure to remind me of this every so often.

My phone number is unlisted and thank god this woman moved FAR FAR away so I can ignore her.

HI:

I do believe my son is getting his Dad a handmade friendship bracelet--they are so cute I love mine I got for MD. I will add to that a leather travel (toiletries) case and some Vera Wang cologne to put inside of it.

My own excellent Father is deceased
7.gif
, but my husband had his publications bound in leather and gave them to his Father a couple of weeks ago as an early FD present. As his Dad is also an Engineer--and my hubby inscribed something very beautiful inside--something about he (Dad) inspiring him (son) to a great profession. It was very touching. To boot, the bound text was very beautifully done, and his Dad loved reading all that detailed Engineering stuff.

A flaming bag of poo to my MIL however, whose only inspiration is to skank people down since she is beyond perfect.

cheers--Sharon

I''m with MMM, a huge flaming bag of POOP!!! And a bag for my mother too!!!! They suck and that''s being nice!!!!

What about a U2 iPod?

I had an idea years ago that my friend and I should start the "Dysfuntional Family Card Store" because they didn't make cards for all the screwed up family situations we had/have.

I don't speak with my father these days, nevermind sending cards, but for a few years there when things were in limbo, it would have been nice to have a card say "It's Father's Day, so I'm sending this obligatory card, but you really hurt me and obliterated the trust in our relationship." or, "Happy Father's Day. I may never forgive you for using me to cover up your sordid affair but I am sending this card out of respect."

I do celebrate with both my grandfathers, which is nice. Life goes on!
2.gif

LOL...you guys crack me up...it's good to know I'm not alone here....
J-Fo..they shoud print a card up for that!

And how about...."It's father's day you anti-semitic bastard, so I'm sending you this obligatory card because my amazing jewish husband made me because *we're* not the ones who will burn in hell for all eternity" ROTFL!!!!!!!!!!!! Hellmark Cards.

OMG, now I feel better. Hellmark cards, that''s great. I have no words for the sorry excuse of a parent my father was and same goes for my mother. I spend a lot of time taking care of my grandmother, my mother''s mother and I celebrate mother''s day with her. She is 94, and a fire cracker. I love her with ll my heart. My parents should never have had kids, but I''m glad they did cause I''m here and the cycle of abuse has been broken.

I just realized what a dork I was. I thought everyone was responding to what they were getting for their husbands

My dad doesn''t live in this country, so a card or phonecall makes his day. I don''t really do it for the American Father''s day though, in our country it''s celebrated on 8/8.
