I think there might actually most of a horse in there, not just the tail....

You cannot clearly see an object through that..you can see light through it...I stand by what I said. If an item is tranparent it should be perfectly clear. The word is used far more often then should be. Anything that changes the perception of the person looking through it is not transparent. Sunglasses are translucent where as nontinted reading glasses are transparent.

Definitions

Transparent

having the property of transmitting light without appreciable scattering so that bodies lying beyond are seen clearly.

Translucent

permitting the passage of light:a. aclear transparent - ¡ waterb. btransmitting and diffusing light so that objects beyond cannot be seen clearly.

All the sellers (junk) stones look like crap!

Indeed, there are some right dogs on that list! Why facet something that is translucent or opaque? Some of this material might work as cabochons in new age jewelry, but I don't see any point in facetting material of this quality except perhaps as part of a budding gem cutter's training.

I understand, but I can see through to the base of the stone (through the enormous window it has), and I could probably see print through it if it were lying down underneath it. There are inclusions, which on a picture heavily blown up, look terrible. However, you cannot see through most well cut, clean and faceted high RI stones either, so based on your definitions above, a well cut clean diamond or sphalerite would not be transparent because bodies lying beyond them are not clearly seen due to the way they refract light, but I consider them transparent. I consider fine jadeite, and some sleepy material to be translucent. The definitions that you have used are pretty widespread, and I'm unsure if they apply to gemology. To each his own though, I can see why some people might consider that stone translucent.

I agree with the bitten off crayon comment.

Every market has a niche. Maybe we are all being to elitest about this? If someone see''s it and says they love it who are we to say it''s garbage?

In reflection I feel kinda like a big jerk.

Sometimes you have to just apprecaite the little things in life.

If someone happens to love it, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But take it to any appraiser or lab and they are not going to say it’s a fine specimen of a faceted blue sapphire. It is what it is.

Sure!! I think Pricescope is invaluable to showing us what to avoid in a gem, and this is a prime example of it. I can see these ugly sapphires used in bead work though. Typically that's probably what they're used for, and maybe this represents a significant portion of this seller's buyers. Nowadays, jewelers are using reject "galaxy" diamond "gravel" and other gem "gravel" such as this sapphire, for high priced beaded necklaces and earrings. Personally, I'm not attracted to them, but they are fetching higher prices.
32.gif
I've actually seen some designer pieces highlighted in Modern Jeweler magazine if you can believe that, and they were not cheap!! Buyer beware as always!!

While we're on the subject of ugly sapphires, I think this page demonstrates how radical and invasive treatment can make road gravel look pretty nice. At least this sapphire, if it truly is untreated, is still blue!! Talk about ugly. See this page from NSC.

Chances are the customers are getting exactly what they think they are getting, which goes a long way for a vendor. Especially on ebay. To the sellers credit, those don''t look very photoshopped
3.gif
You *know* you aren''t getting a 3 carat ceylon blue untreated sapphire for $40. As weird as it may be, not everyone is going to crave something that''s super saturated, completely clear etc. I have a couple silly (and very very cheap) stones that I like even though/because they are terrible (i think it''s cause they are just sooo weird). But then, i wouldn''t be offended if anyone called them junk
3.gif
specially someone from here.

Honestly, if someone likes those stones for what they are, they probably won''t (and shouldn''t) care what anyone else thinks. If they think those are awesome examples of sapphires... then they have a lot of learning to do. And if they make it to this forum, they are probably after some learning. And who doesn''t benifit from some education!

The part i find funny is the descriptions... which lead you to think one thing, but the picture gives you something entirely different.

I know I had fun with this thread! It was fun, please don''t regret posting it.

arg, i got windbaggy...

I wasn''t offended just introspective. I felt judgemental and bad and expressed it. How others feel is upto them. I''m not perfect so I don''t presume to tell others how to live,or think,or feel.

I am sorry if I offended anyone. I was just joking. Sometimes people do not understand my jokes, I'll try to be more cautious. If you track all my responses to this post, you'll see I have been joking all the time.

Sorry my answer ended up inside the quote.

I am really sorry if I offended anyone. Most of my responses are jokes, I have noticed that they are not always taken as such and I shall try to be more cautions. If you trace all my responses to this post, you'll see that I was joking, like everyone esle. But this seller really got high ratings, and that is what surprised me.

Still surprised that anyone took my response seriously...

Seriously those were some dogs, but somebody apparently is buying them.

I''ve also got some dogs in my collection when I started out(oh man are they ever ugly!) but they''re also a reminder too.

Lets be real, we''re here because we want to do better than that. We want to get the best value we can for what we pay out and we don''t want to get cheated. I don''t think thats too much to ask for.

Therefore we''re called on to be jugemental on stones. If we not why the heck are we here for?

This thread is fun for those of us that are experienced but its also a good thread for newbies. This in many ways shows them what to avoid and why. (And trust, that sapphire was dog ugly and the dematoid did look like a loogie someone hocked up)

Personally I do not feel guilty for pointing out stones that aren''t meant for much except the bottom of a fish bowel. If that will keep someone from spending their hard earned money on a bunk and ugly gem, its all good

Ok time to stop being so serious. we need to expand this thread more

Swear it was a joke!!! Perhaps I should mark it all as LOL like everyone else does but I thought everyone would understand it was a joke. It is very hard to offend me, I like a good laugh, and constructive criticism, too, but I sometimes forget to mark my answers as LOL. Sorry! I feel like I have spoiled a nice party because everyone, including myself, was having heck of a time with this ebay stuff. Sorry, PA!

Oh no Crasru! What I said wasn''t to you. I was referring to the comment about someone feeling like an elitist jerk for talking about this, and I was like ummmm... this is just supposed to be fun, calm down!

I got the tongue in cheek nature of your post

The 5 year old in me just laughed at the word "booger" hehe. You know how when you look at something on Ebay they will give you recommendations based on what you were looking at? Let me tell you, they have sent some real beauties my way lately
