Can someone tell me how to safely clean rose cut diamonds that are not foil backed? They are new cuts not antiques. Can I use non ammonia jewelry cleaning solution?? Help! Please.
Forgot to say my jeweler gave me a cleaning solution to use if I wanted to, so I would assume that would be fine for you. My ring has modern, non-foil-backed rose cuts.
As long as they are not backed at all, a normal cleaning solution will work fine. If anyone reading has rose cut set jewelry with foil or carbon black backing, they cannot use a liquid cleaning solution without potentially damaging the appearance due to water and cleaner contamination of the backing materials. Many old items did not use a foil back, but did use carbon black, like soot from a coal fire, to "enhance" the appearance of rose cut diamonds. It is pretty fragile stuff and not readily repaired.
