I found a place in town and I watched a few piercings on Youtube. I''m not a wimp, but what does it feel like and how long does it hurt ? The videos look aweful.

I think I''m too old to get a piercing now, but I have certainly done my share of things to look and become "me". Differentiating oneself from the herd is generally the goal, but many times it is also a way of joining the alternative herd instead. You can''t judge a book by its cover, but people often do exactly that. Wrong as it may be, the person in the alternative herd is the unfortunate target of this silly discrimination.

Why do we discriminate against people of other races, religions, neighborhoods, etc? They are not from "our" herd, but from another one, I suppose. If you are in a rather common herd and want to join a smaller one, then you get the badges of membership, such as a peircing and voila'', you are a member. You have earned the membership by such a simple act. Now you believe you''ll have instant new friends and associates, forgetting about thoe ones you had back in the common herd you no longer graze with.

When my son was in his teens and twenties he definitely wanted to be in the alternative herd. He did it all, from the Mohawk bleached blonde haircut, the teal color hair of college, the multiple piercings, the tatoos, the ragged jeans, the leather jacket with chains, and the Doc Martin boots. I always supported him and was sure that someday he would re-join the common herd. Well, he is 36 and is half way between the herds these days. He has a great job and his life has many of the normal appearances, yet he still has fond yearnings to be in the alternative herd from time to time. I still support him in this regard as I occasionally travel with the alternative herd myself as I used to do more often forty+ years ago.

Don''t be afraid of trying out some of these relatively harmless "modern" things. See if YOU think they have value to you. See what the consequences are and if they are worth the hassle. Life is a relatively short journey and it is YOU who makes it. Your life is yours to use well or abuse. A little balance and experimentation is not so bad. What are you going to dream about in the rest home when you are 80? What you didn''t do, or what you did do? LIVE and go for it. So long as it doesn''t hurt someone else, what is the problem with some little personal decision making. If it eventually seems like a foolish decision, remove the piercing, laser away the tatoo, and get a normal hair cut, etc. In a few weeks people will think you have changed totally because they do judge books by their covers, not their content.

Hi David,

You are never too old to get a piercing! I don''t think I mentioned that I am 44 years old. I appreciate all that you said and so eloquently. In my case, I am not trying to change my herd and I simply think its pretty just as I like my pierced ears. Only one hole each ear by the way. Will my neighbors think I''m drugging in the basement? I doubt it. Will my minister do a double take? Yes, he probably will, and I''m sure we''ll have a good conversation about it. For me, it represents nothing about my character. Its pleasing to MY eye and that''s it. Thanks for your thoughts David. You''re a wise man indeed.

It''s gone now but this is what you want. I had my FI special order an 18g stud for me. I''ll have to find out the company he got it from. Most shops will use a 16g but if you want it small you need an 18g.
Yes Legacy that is what I want!
What''s the mm size of the stone please? Thanks for posting your pic . I find nothing repulsive about it. To me its no different than an ear piercing so I''m not sure what the gross factor is. Now, I would never get a ring or a bone because IMO that''s not pretty. So to each his own.
I appreciate all the information and I am considering doing it. Researching my local piercing places. I no longer work so that''s not an issue at all. And, I don''t care what anyone thinks of me especially someone that makes a judgement based on a nose piercing. It might be an issue for social functions with my husband, but it sounds like I can get a clear stud and that would remedy his issue.
Honestly I can''t remember. It was tinnie tiny though. I''ll have to ask my FI to see if he remembers. I have most of my jewelery special made for me. I''ve taken out so many and I miss each and every one of them. I still have places that you can''t see done and I''m thinking about getting a microdermal on my neck and placing it close to the hair line. I miss my nape most of all probably.

Most people tear up, I didn''t. Tearing seems to be the normal reaction. It''s like a pinch to some and a punch in the nose to others. It felt like a punch to me because at the time I had done 2 others right before it. I think my orbital and my conch...

Don''t worry its not that bad

Thanks Legacy I think I'm going to need a hand holder. Where do you reside? hehe just kidding. So what size should I go for? 20 guage? Can you recommend jewelry sites? I want to have my own stud placed instead of what a shop may have.

I''m so glad you''re going to go for it! I love piercings! I live in a conservative area and I''m a public school teacher (pretty darn conservative job) but I kept my tongue ring in until just this year, and nobody ever said boo about it. (I took it out because I''m getting some serious cosmetic dentistry work done and I don''t want to chip anything, which has happened in the past.)

Anyway, I have seven piercings in each ear and two tattoos on my right foot, and I''ve never had a problem with anyone judging me because of any of it. I think your attitude and behavior say much more to others about you than your choice of body adornment.

Can''t wait to see pictures of your nose ring!

Does it hurt? It felt like a pinch and my eyes watered. All of the "sit still" warnngs made it hard to do so, but it really wasn''t a big deal.

Just wanted to chime in about the "too old" comments. My grandma''s best friend (since kindergarten) just got a tattoo. Since I have the most ink in the family, and she didn''t want to ask her own family, I helped her set up the appointment and everything. She chose a small rose, it''s beautiful, she loves it! I get more free stuff from my tattoist because of the business I send him. The End.

I'm glad you're going for it too, if it's what you want!

I had my nose pierced when I was 16. Every day my mom said to me "Dear, there's something on your face! Oh, it's that thing." Every. Single. Day. Was it annoying? Sure was. Was mom about to give up? Nope. It was a war of attrition. I lost. I took it out when I was 17 and that was that. You can still see the scar where it closed up, which look like a big pore, but only if you look closely.

I also had 3 earrings in each ear back then. I loved getting my ears pierced. But these days I only wear one in each ear.

It actually hurt a lot more than I thought, but it''s not that bad. I have a high tolerance for pain, though, so I don''t think piercings really hurt that much.

It heals very quickly and it''s not like it can get caught on anything, so it''s not going to hurt for very long after you get it done. I say go for it-if you don''t like it, take it out and it probably just look like a pore.

Definitely get them to use a smaller gauge for the piercing, though, so you can have a tiny nose ring. Maybe 18g or even 20g if they can do it that small.

Good luck with that! I''m no help to you but have been following the saga. And I wondered it you were leaning more towards having it done. I kind of half expected to open up the thread and see that you had pierced your nose already. You should post pics of it when your your able.....inquiring minds want to know

You''ll be allright!

You know what? My sister has had her tongue pierced twice! Can it really hurt more than the tongue, cuz I know when I just bite my tongue it hurts like h**l!

I got my nose pierced the day before Valentine''s day this year. I don''t have a high tolerance for pain at all. I''m scared to death of needles, but I''ve been wanting it done since highschool and I figured my want hasn''t gone away so I''m going to get it. I''m 27 by the way. I am married with 3 year old twins. I had mine pierced with a 16 guage. It did not hurt at all! You will not have a huge pore looking spot if you ever want to take it out, you just make sure that after it''s healed you put an 18 or 20g in it. That will let the 16 guage hole close up around it a bit so the hole is not so big. But once you go to a smaller guage, stick with it. Don''t go from small to large.

I wear a tiny diamond in mine, it''s flat and sits flush against my nose. It''s small and most people don''t notice it at all. If you ever desire to have a bigger look, you can still find a bigger stone on the smaller piercing. I disagree about it looking better on non-white women, it looks good on both, if you have the right nose and face for it. I''m irish and have auburn hair and really pale skin. I get tons of compliments that it looks nice on me.

I buy my clear retainers on e-bay. That is the only place I can find the totally flat ones that sit flush against your nose. The others are clear balls and they are totally obvious.

I hope I answered some of your questions, feel free to ask more if you need to. I LOVE my nose piercing and so does my DH! Sorry if my reply is not gramatically correct. I''m in a hurry to leave and visit my mom! I''ll check back here in the AM.

Oh watch your face when you use a towel!! I forgot it was there the first few days and I rubbed my face with a towel- boy that hurt!

Go for 18g, 20g would be too thin. I live in FL where are you? I hold strangers hands when they come in our shop so I''d have no problem holding a fellow PSers hand!

Here are some sites. Be wary of who you buy from because not everyone makes good stuff.

I promise piercing your tongue doesn''t hurt. It''s one big muscle and muscle doesn''t have the same nerve structure that skin does. Its not even a pinch. It really just feels like something is going through your tongue, and you have resistance until it finally goes in. The worst part about it (and any piercing) is going from needle to the piece of jewelry. With the tongue, it''s not that bad because it just pushes through and then the ball winds into the end of it. With rings though, there is twisting and that is NOT FUN.

Good luck you do decide to have your nose pierced. I don’t have my nose pierced, but my sister in law does and loves it. I am not one on piercing but love tattoos! This is the only photo I could find of my shoulder piece.

The shaved head was due to my mother in law having cancer. She lost her hair I keep my hair shaved.

Also this pic was taken in Key West, we where just about to go sun bathing, that explains the ummm attire.

I thought getting my tongue pierced hurt! I don''t know if it hurt more than the nose, though. The nose probably hurt the most right when I got it done, but it healed the quickest so it didn''t hurt long term at all.

Can you tell I went through a bit of a piercing stage when I turned 18?

My ears are now riddled with holes! (I had 5 on each ear-3 on the bottom and 2 in the cartilage.) And my main holes were 2 gauges so they''re still kind of big. You can''t really tell with my diamond studs in, though.

I had my nostril pierced for about four years or so. Very easy, not that painful (compared to some other piercings), and never got infected. Sometimes it would get sore if I had a cold or my allergies were acting up, but overall it was extremely low-maintenance.

I got it in college and wore it through grad school, then took it when I got my first real job. No one said anything to me, but it just didn''t feel appropriate for the place. You have either pay attention to things like that, or choose not to care. I took it out several years ago and you can''t see anything there now.

When I had my tongue done I though it stung, like I bit it.

I've been wanting to post but was unable to due to my inability to post pictures. Finally, I've figured it out and hope it's not too late.

I've had mine since I was 19. I am now 34 and still loving it.

The piercing is so small that most people don't notice it.

I just caught up on this thread again. I wasn''t allowed to have more than one hold in each ear, but I continued to give myself more. I was able to hid my second holes until they were nearly healed, but when I did my third one (this was all just me and a needle by the way) my dad kept seeing it and making me take it out. I ended up piercing that 3rd hole 3 times! It''s still a lump of scar tissue and I can''t even wear it anymore.

ginzagirl~ You''re adorable!
