I was 'window shopping' for a Moonstone, as its on my list as an addition for my collection. Not A 99 cent cab that you see all the time...Im after a really nice one. Im trying to find one with as clear a base as possible, with a strong blue sheen...they are out there, but ridiculously expensive. OH, and I also want it to be faceted. Ha ha...it may take me a while...

But...in my looking around on eBay, I found these.....

Wha??

Is there any gem that they won't enhance??

Well, they are pretty.

If it can be enhanced, it will be enhanced. :blackeye:

Blue moonstones with a clear base and a strong large sheen isn't easy to find, and as you said, it starts to get pretty expensive. Usually, the very clean ones are faceted, so at least you know it's going to be very clear. Moonstones seem to not be popular here with many being sold in Asia.

Are those doublets - moonstone over a coloured stone?

I noticed that this sort of cabs are becoming quite popular, specially rutille quartz over lapis. It is an interesting look but not my cup of tea. To me, I group these with intarsia and similar type of work. I don't see it as an "enhancement" in the line of heating, dying and other treatment but along the line of things to do with minerals - facet, cab, intarsia, sculpt, set in metal, etc.

Lady D, these are "color enhanced", which I interpreted as being dyed. I could be wrong though. I found them on eBay. If I can find the listing again, Ill see if it says anything different. I just assumed dye.

Uppy, I agree, they are pretty! Especially the red one. Some treatment I'm okay with, but outright dye? Meh.

Chrono, I found some on eBay that are what Im looking for, but they were like $200/ct and not very big, like 7x5 ovals and such. I will find my bargain, eventually! haha

If you also buy a blue sheen moonstone piece of jewelry with an enclosed backing, they some times add blue color to the back of the stone so you think you see a blue sheen. That's why when buying a blue sheen moonstone, you should purchase them unset or with an open backing if in jewelry.

Do watch out for synthetic moonstones and those with backings too.

Oh, dear. I do try to give the benefit of the doubt... no more hope in this case. Dye is too much for me. I am also bothered by the fact that they look "wrong" - totally subjective, of course!
