I am just starting to check out hotels for a possible trip to NYC. Though I will be going to look at stones, I do want to see lots of bling. And shop, shop, shop. So, as far as location is concerned - I want to be in the middle of it all. But the prices are way up there! But I guess that is NYC. Tell me you think:

New York Palace

Omni Bershire (is this in a business area and not a shopping area)

Warwick

Hotel Elysee

The Drake (Swissotel)

Le Parker Meridian

If I stayed close to Times Sq., is that too far to walk up to 57th for shopping and over to 5th fore the same?

I love The Peninsula (SP?) it''s right off Fifth Ave and close to everything.

the peninsula is really nice, but the $$$ - whoa!

Yeah it''s a lttle pricey, but think of the money you''ll save on taxis. You can walk to the diamond district and to many PS vendors and the shopping on Fifth is so convenient to this hotel. I''m sure you can do better, I just love this hotel. How long are you staying????

We are staying about 5 nights. Gotta get the stone, then get an appt. with Leon! But I want to see all the high-end bling, for ideas. We might see 1 show, have 1 real nice dinner. But I really just want to focus on the ring.

Can you call Leon ahead to make the appointment??? That may save you some time.

For sure will call Leon ahead of time. But I just have to wait for the right stones to come in, then book- grrr!!

Once the stones are in then make the appointment with Leon. The most important part is that the right stones are in for you to look at, then the rest is easy. Well not easy, but not too difficult. You can''t book your trip until all your ducks are lined in a row.

In the past, I have stayed at Omni Bershire. It''s fairly centrally located. These days, I always stay at one of the Manhattan Suite Hotels. I''ve stayed at the Sherborn & Lyden Gardens.

Though anywhere USA, the Hilton is probably the least expensive (they have specials).

The Pierre is very nice - but pricey.

where is Manhattan Suite?

After studying maps this morning, I think the area where the Palace is looks good for shopping excursions up and down 5th and Madison and 57th.

So is SoHo a must see for shopping? Are the same stores in SoHo that are in Midtown? (read that somewhere)

What is the weather like in late Sept?

For a nice dinner?

just keep in mind.. 20 blocks is a mile. so location shouldnt have to be too specific.

shopping wise. down in soho you will find a lot of little stores that dont even hit the radar of the larger design houses. that is where you will find the trendy and up and coming stuff. meatpacking disctict has some interesting shopping as well. again trendy.

if you are just looking for WOW factor and window shopping. 5th avenue between the mid 40''s and central park, 57th street. madison picks up where 5th avenue left off starting ~57th and going up to 70. (some of mad. is the same as 5th, but there are some other stores mixed in. great place to walk in late sept!

late sept. highs might push mid 70''s lows in the upper 50''s to 60. the city tends to hold a bit of heat too, so it should be nice weather to visit in. (much better than...well.. now... UGH!)

hmm food....

what is your taste?

For dinner I highly recommend Il Tinello''s 212-245-4388, it''s right off 5th ave and is yummy!!!! For a great lunch I love Aqua Pazza, again off 5th ave and across the street from The twenty One Club, their number is 212-582-6900 address is 36 West 52nd Street. On the corner where the big NBA store is, it''s delish!!!!

thanks for all the info!

food, well not heavy french, I guess anything that stands out and will help us make a few memories. Maybe something that doesn''t require a taxi ride downtown. Someplace special. Then the big question, what do we wear?

For shopping I know not to wear the "tourist special" jeans and sneakers, but how does one shop all day in normal shoes!!

I would wear nice pants and comfortable shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking so comfy shoes are a must!!! HTH.

Hey Ann,

Just got back from a few days in nyc, tagged along on a trip my dad & brothers planned figuring I could take advantage of the free air & hotel

2.gif
So if it is just me, I stay with friends, if I tag along with my dad on a business trip, we stay at the Marriott Marquis or Doubletree in Times Square, I guess I''ve stayed at a few others, but I can''t remember, more boutiquey. I hate being in tourist central, but I''m usually on a theater binge so it is convenient which is the most important factor to me. I guess they''re usually around $400/night, but this trip we needed 3 rooms and that sooo wasn''t going to fly with my dad, so we ended up at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers at like 53rd & 7th? Very convenient for what I needed, don''t know if it would work for you, but it was only like $250/night?, comfy beds, lots of pillows
1.gif
, all the staff was attentive & helpful. Had a dispute about charges and they didn''t even question it and just took it all off, so I was happy. The rooms were on the smaller side, but I ended up in a room with two doubles and I could''ve just had one king and so maybe I would''ve felt like I had more space that way? I guess I look at hotels a little differently than a lot of people though, I can''t fathom paying some of the prices to just sleep somewhere! Maybe for a special occasion, but I''d rather spend my money on the shopping

Another good resource is tripadvisor.com - great to use for hotel reviews if you want to check on some of the ones you''re considering.

Oh, agreed with Kaleigh, Aqua Pazza is yummy

Have a fun trip!

hmm... midtown.... that can be tough. there is some good food, but i think for a special dinner.. make the trip downtown. i promise you wont regret it!!!!

if you want to take a chance and a short taxi ride. (taxi''s really arent that bad... you might be looking at $12 each way from midtown...). and remember... reservations...reservations..reservations. and make them ahead of time. (sometimes a week + in advance for a nice dinner)

this is the most romantic restaurant ive been to.. atmoshphere is amazing...as is the food. its new american food. by candel light. paino in background. in an old carrage house

one if by land

a step down on the price list.... would be this little place. great food. cozy little restaurant.....dim lights. candels burning everywhere. really a wonderful time

the place

take a look there are many more i could suggest!!!

I can second "One if by Land". The place is Aaron Burr''s former home, so truly spectacular, and the tasting menu is sensational.

There are so many great places to eat in my neighbourhood (Soho). Balthazar (Spring Street) is my local! This place is fabulous and does the best brunch in the city. Davidburke & Donatella opened within the past year or so. It''s New American cuisine and pretty darn good. This is on Park Avenue in the ''60s, so much more convenient for a midtown stay.

I can also recommend Aki, on W4th, if you''re into sushi. The owner used to be the chef to the Ambassador of the W. Indies, so there''s a Caribbean flavour to his food. Low-key hole-in-the-wall place but, for me, it knocks the socks off Nobu and Blue Ribbon.

I always stay at the Pierre (59th & 5th). I love the atmosphere and the decor - it has the feeling of a 1930''S movie set.

Yeah, my friends rave about baltazar.

Regarding Soho & tribeca area, how old are you? I''m middle age and those areas hold little appeal to me - but are considered hip and trendy.

Bloomies is a must. Other than Bendel''s, all I need is in Bloomingdales.

Regarding Manhattan Suites - there are several. The Lyden Gardens (just renovated in mid-century mod decor) is around Lexington & 64th. I think they have renamed it Affina Gardens (and I think they changed all their hotels to Affina) It''s convenient for me - but I like the upper east side. The Sherborne (sp) version is near the empire state building.

As far as jewelry shopping - don''t do much of that.

Also, for a cheaper eat lunch - I love Hale and Heartly Soups. There are several around the city. My favorite Italian is Primolo''s. (2nd & 64th). Also, I don''t know if they have resumed this or not - but Jazz friday afternoon at Moma. I think it''s free admission then. And, my husband loves the Bluenote.

Is the Algonquin still offering the 10k Martini with a diamond ring in it?

Oh wow, there is so much for you to do and see in our fair city! Living here sort of makes one immune to all that it has to offer but it''s just a wonderful place and you are going to love it!!!

I agree with lost on 5th about the shopping areas. If you really want to hit the high end NY places, Fifth and Madison Avenues are the way to go. Tiffany, Cartier, Bulgari, Harry Winston, DeBeers, Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Chanel, Fendi, etc. You can find all of that and more!!!

Food choices are endless and please don''t be afraid to take a taxi downtown. There are tons of amazing restaurants. My absolute favorite in the entire city is called Il Mulino. It is on W. 3rd between Sullivan and Thompson and it is hands down THE BEST Italian food in the city. The whole dining experience there is unbelievable, you will feel like you are in Italy and you probably won''t want to eat again for a few days! But it is very pricey and reservations are a must. One If By Land is a classic romantic restaurant--many people have been proposed to there! Great fresh Greek seafood place in midtown called Milos--I think it''s on 56th--delish. Union Square Cafe and Blue Water Grill are both great. Also, another classic is Gotham Bar and Grill. Oh my, there are just so many choices. You may want to go to www.citysearch.com and get some ideas from there. I''m sure all of the New Yorkers on this board will be able to give you information on any place you may have questions about.

Regarding clothing, it''s New York City. Anything goes. September should be lovely here, not as humid, but comfortable shoes are always important.

Let us know if you need more advice!!

All I know is that my mom and sister stayed in one of the hotels right in times square last christmas..it was very pricey, but they did it because they had heard it was so nice, and just wanted to try it out for fun.. it think it may have been the marriot marquis.. is that fairly new? and they were on a very high floor.. AND THE ELEVATORS WERE BROKEN.. did not make an enjoyable trip!

I''ve stayed at the Drake (Swisshotel) and the Omni Berkshire, both of which were very nice. I also stayed at the Marriot Marquis on Time''s Square, but found that too big and noisy. On my last trip, we went "budget" and stayed at the Midtown Holliday Inn which was awful and noisy and not conveniently located(we were with sharing our floor with a bunch of high school kids there for a band competition--a total nightmare).

On my last trip, I hosted a dinner celebrating my son''s graduation from law school at Thalia on 51st and 8th, and it was excellent.

Everyone''s responses are so wonderful, thanks so so so much.

I know I am going to wear my husband out shopping! He will never go to NYC with me again. But he knows he owes me!

But the ring will be the true focus. I am just waiting for the call that good stones are in and come see!
