I am looking to buy a piece as a 10YR anniversary present. The anniversary is in one month! :oops2:

Is there an updated list of go to jewelers in Manhattan these days? For platinum work, and hopefully with some interesting inventory on hand at reasonable prices (i.e. not your Tiffany mark up)? I plan on reaching out to Leon Mege, and am interested in any other suggestions. Given the short time frame...

I like the idea of the Emerald Cut Eternity Band (below). Wife would also like rings for her second hand with color. Cool jacket earrings that are multi-functional would also be an option. Also I just discovered Alexandrite... maybe I could buy a loose stone (or pair) and and present it loose, to be set later. That would be cool... emerald cut Alexandrite in the same eternity band design below.

Thanks in advance!

  • For hand-forged platinum, I would suggest that you contact Steven Kirsch. Steven is quite talented, does marvelous work (IIRC he started his career with Leon Mege); gives realistic time estimates, so you can expect the piece(s) will be completed when contemplated, if not earlier; last but not least, he's an all-around nice guy, a pleasure to work with. Will be willing and able to source whatever stones (diamonds and/or colored gemstones) you want.
Think Steven might be able to meet your deadline; depends on what else he already has in the pipeline. Also ask if he has anything "ready made."
  • If SK tells you that he is not able to fabricate what you wish in time for the anniversary date -- and if he doesn't have anything at hand that grabs your heart -- then contact David Friedlander at Diamonds by Lauren; he posts here on PS as Trade member Rockdiamond.
Unlike Steven Kirsch, David does not do his own fabrication (fyi: Leon Mege himself isn't making everything that goes out under his name) , but the benches DBL uses are good; from what I've seen in photos here on PS and on DBL's website, the work done by the "uber bench" is typically excellent. DBL's website
is a sprawling one & the search function is more primitive than I would like, so contacting David will enable you to expedite your consideration of DBL's inventory of diamonds, colored diamonds, colored gemstones and jewelry.
  • If you think you might like to check out a jewelry shop, I've always liked Greenwich St. Jewelers in the Financial District. Very pleasant shopping (or simply browsing) experience: eclectic inventory, generally knowledgeable but not pushy sales staff. They do have their own in-house bench, which I've happily used for ring resizing and the setting of colored gemstones -- but since I'm not familiar with their custom work, I won't endorse the bench for that purpose (although I imagine they would be fine)
Please keep us posted on how you're doing, and don't hesitate to ask for additional assistance. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

P.S. Alexandrite FYI:
An emerald-cut Alexandrite eternity band would mean years of patience & oodles of cash in order to acquire the necessary stones. Not sure if you've seen any Alexandrites in person, but the vast majority of what's available nowadays doesn't have -- even under optimum lighting conditions -- the attractive, notable color change you may be expecting. And much of the time, they all too often are sadly meh or muddy, leaving people to wonder what all the fuss has been about.

Hop over to the Colored Gemstones forum whenever you'd like to discuss Alexandrite shopping:

Haven't seen any Alexandrites in person. Sounds like I missed that one by a few years. Would have been a great present though! Thank you for the help.

The problem that you’re going to run into with Alexandrite, as MollyMalone said, is that finding matching ones will take you a long, long time and lots of money. My wife’s center stone is an Alexandrite and I thought about getting her matching Alexandrite eternity bands. The problem is, not only do you have to find a bunch of Alexandrite that looks the same (or very similar) in a certain lighting conditions, you have to find ones that have the same degree of color change. You could have two stones that look the same in natural light but one turns a deep reddish purple in incandescent light and the other turns grayish pink. You’d be lucky to find two stones that match to make a set of earrings, much less 30 to make an eternity band.
