NYC / New Jersey sales tax

I am thinking of coming over from the UK to New York for New Year being in NYC from Dec 31 to Jan 4th to collect an engagement ring that I will already of ordered online just before I get to NYC, and also to get engaged in NYC while there.

At the moment I am concentrating on dealing with an online retailer with a base in NYC and I am looking for a diamond and a setting for my girlfriends engagement ring.

-What are Jewelers likely opening hours in the NYC diamond district over these dates?

If I was stay in New Jersey on the Hudson while in NYC and have the diamond I had ordered online then shipped from NYC to my New Jersey hotel would I avoid the sales tax being collected by the retailer?? Instead I would declare it later off course

Obviously I also understand the law is to declare the ring to customs on returning to the UK.

as for sales tax, my understanding and personal experience is that if you get it mailed to an address out of ny state, that you will not pay sales tax at the time of sale. having said that, i once overheard a jeweler say that they would still withhold sales tax on purchases sent to nj. in any case, if you have any questions on that, you should just ask the person you are buying the ring from directly and they will tell you their policy.
