Yes! Yes! Yes!

A year ago I started 1-yr subscriptions at Boston Globe, Washington Post, and New York Times.
I soon cancelled WAPO and BG; I felt NYT was much better.

NYT offers a few different subscription levels of access - pay more, get more.
I think for 2022 I had the cheapest one, News and Crossword Puzzles only.
But that din't include access to the NYT Cooking feature, Wirecutter (NYT's technology feature), or Athletics.

Even though I could not access Cooking or Wirecutter they did tease me by showing the headlines and letting me read a few articles per month.
It will be great to have access to everything, every day!!!!

I received an email informing me my sub price will go up starting tomorrow, so I went to NYT chat and told them I want to cancel.

They chatted back a better deal if I don't cancel, All-Access for $52 a year.
I said, "No thanks. Please cancel".
Then chat came back with an All-Access subscription for only $26 a year.
I took it.
Now I'll get everything (plus all past issues back to 1851) for half the price I was paying in 2022 for News and CW only.
I must say it was much easier to negotiate via chat instead of phone.
Chat is less personal, so it has a lower level of emotion.

I din't think I would, but after a year I LOVE the NYT!!!! ... and now only 7 cents a day.

I recommend it.
Get a trial subscription via chat and negotiate a good price.

I have a subscription too. I really enjoy the games especially crossword, spelling bee, wordle, and vortex. I do the vortex puzzle while I have my morning tea as it helps get me get calm and centered to meet the stresses of the day.

Love it, have subscription plus cooking. Thanks for the negotiation tips.

Actually ... Shame on us.

We're choking on nice diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies - but we're not fully supporting superior journalism.

:naughty: :nono: :naughty:

I’ll try this for my dad! He loves NYT but gripes about needing to pay more if he wants the other features…

LOL!
NYT emailed me a transcript of our chat.
It's posted below; It may be helpful for others who want a good price.

(Who knows? Maybe you can get it even cheaper. )
In 365 days I'll shoot for 2024 All-Access for $13 a year. :evil2:
I think I'll go clean my FCD collection now. :lol-2:

Two posts preceding the below transcript were not documented ...
The are ...
Me: Please cancel my subscription.
Rodheri: Why do you want to cancel?

Hello KEN ! Thank you for contacting The New York Times support team. I am Rodheri and I will be happy to help you today. Could you spare me a few minutes while I verify your account?
  • You:
    Yes
  • rodheri:
Before canceling, I would love to inform you that I was able to locate your account, and I was able to see that you are one of the customers eligible for the All-Access subscription. You are going to pay just C$1.00/week for an All Access plan for 1 whole year! No commitments. In order you can enjoy unlimited access to all our articles starting from 1851 until now, News, Games, Cooking, and Crossword, Wirecutter, The Athletic. Among other benefits, you can also log in to use your subscription from any supported device such as tablets, laptops, desktops, or smartphones. What do you think?
  • You:
I can afford half of that.

  • You:
    I would accept the All-Access subscription for $0.50/week or $26 a year.
  • rodheri:
You have agreed to continue your service, with a new rate effective today. Billing for this change will take effect immediately. As a courtesy, the remaining time from your previous subscription will be prorated, applied to your new subscription as a credit, and automatically applied to future payments. If you cancel, you will no longer have access to any unused portion of that courtesy credit. Are you agree with the terms? You will also be charged for the next 4 weeks at the rate of $2.00 per 4 weeks (minus the amount of credit on your account). After 1 year you will be billed at the standard rate of $12.00 per 4 weeks. We will charge your Credit Card every 4 weeks unless you contact us to cancel. You may cancel at any time by calling 1-800-NY-Times (800-698-4637).
  • rodheri:
I haven't heard from you for a while, would you like to continue chatting?
  • You:
Does this price ($2.00 per 4 weeks for a year) include All-Access, including News, Games, Cooking, Crossword Wirecutter, and The Athletic. ?
  • rodheri:
correct all that included for that price
  • You:
Okay, then I accept that offer. Thank you.
  • rodheri:
Perfect! The promotion was applied! Is there anything else that we can help you?
  • rodheri:
It was an absolute delight to help you today. Please stay safe and healthy. Know that we truly appreciated your readership and well-being. Don't hesitate to chat with us again if you need anything else. Have a wonderful rest of your day!

I subscribe to NYT and WAPO. After the initial introductory rates, I negotiated WAPO down once but have paid in full since.

Good information here. I yearn to have access to the recipes. I wanted to get one for the velvet scrambled eggs today, but there is no way I am going to pay more than I already am. I wonder if I dare try what you did. What you did was awesome!

I do not use my "The Washington Post" subscription daily. Is it worth keeping?

Tell WAPO you only want to subscribe for the days you read it, and cancel for they days you don't.

I finally upgraded my NYT subscription about a month ago, primarily to access one of their Thanksgiving recipes. I also subscribe to WAPO and my local newspaper. I considered the LA Times but decided tit was more important to support my local paper. Unfortunately it isn’t what it used to be, where features are concerned, but it still provides some good and important coverage of State and local events and coverage.

Unfortunately getting a subscription for a physical paper no longer makes sense for me. We travel too much, and I no longer have a cat. (I kid - I figured out newspaper-free options for dealing with the litter box a long time ago ;-).) But I do buy a paper when I treat myself to a solo breakfast at the local cafe. Usually I’ll do the crossword first, and then browse the rest of the paper. And I’ve found that even with today’s rather abbreviated physical paper, the experience is very different from perusing the paper online. I’m exposed to - and I read - stories about a much larger variety of topics when I have the real thing in front of me, as opposed to reading it online.

We don't get them, but I also prefer reading a paper newspaper.
We only get two free, delivered, small local weekly newspapers.

Buying a large big city paper newspaper involves many downsides, one of which is environmental.
All that the paper, ink, delivery truck exhaust, recycling burden, etc.

My husband and I receive the NYT hard copy on our driveway each morning. Part of our morning ritual is reading it while we eat breakfast (after we listen to NPR national and NPR local editions).

There are things I like about the NYT and things I don't. We will always still get it and read it though.

We also receive the WSJ on Saturdays. The WSJ business section is real business vs the NYT's "feel good" fluffery business section. (And I say that as a registered, voting Dem.) Also the NYT's arts section is usually total PC nonsense (and I say that as a professional visual artist who pays the mortgage with the product of my own hands.)

I do love the Tuesdays NYT Science Times, and the Wednesday's cooking section. I like the WSJ's Art's, Design and Business sections. And the Mansion Monday section is a hoot.

We've been paying $1 per week.
It was about to jump to $17 per month so I began to cancel and they offered me $1 per week again. =)2
