lol you guys do know there are a million rings that look like that so that it can sit flush under a matching e-ring, right? This particular ring is an Elsa Peretti, so I'm not 100% sure this one is made for that reason.. but you should find a million like these!

There are some ridiculous styles out there. There's been a few threads hosting ugly rings. One that comes to mind is the Divorce Rings thread I started a while ago, hosting an article about divorce rings. One was a ring with a crow's skull, and a bouquet shoved throw it's skull. Seriously, WTF?

Found it: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/a...ip-status-divorce-ring.html?ito=feeds-newsxml.

The other types of rings that make me vomit in my mouth a little are those frozen-spit princess cuts in an illusion/invisible setting, to make them look like 1 big diamond. :) That makes me go WTF faster than the divorce ring.

I certainly have! I'll have to see if I can find some photos/links to some.

madelise is right though -- that curved ring is pretty common. I don't personally care for them because I don't think they look right worn alone if you go without the ering for a day (I mean...gosh, WHY would you want to do that!?).

Aud -- if I was ever so unlucky to need one of these, and wanted to wear it solo, I'd just flip it over so the groove is under my hand ;) voila! normal band!

Good point. But still, then you have spinning issues to worry about. Meh. I'd just rather have a normal band.

lmfao at the curved wedding bands...

i gotta admit, id rather have a little spacer than a curved band!

Besides the aforementioned 4 stones made to look like 1...i think this is PRETTY bad. ummm same idea but WTF?!

http://www.helzberg.com/product/1-2ct+tw+diamond+engagement+ring+1788171.do?sortby=ourPicks

And I'm not a snob, but unless you are dirt poor, if my bf tried to propose with a 900 dollar ring i'd tell him to save for 4 years to quadruple that budget...LOL

*faint* that is terrible...first of all, if you want a square shape, why would you fill it up with round brilliants? second of all...EWWWWWWW. I would throw that at someone's head. people should not be allowed to sell pieces of crap like that.

Agreed. ALL of the illusion rings are just a giant facepalm for me.

I can't get over how HIGH they look they sit off the finger.

Aud, those remind me of Cornilus Hollander which I LOOOOVE but BF HAAAAATES!

I've scoured Pearlmans site over and over since they carry Sholdt and that's who/what we went with. This designer always struck me as odd. Particularly in the profile views.

I've never heard of him, I'll look him up. Funny, there is something for everyone! I just don't *get* the settings I linked on Pearlmans. They look uncomfortable and HIGH.

I also stopped in my tracks! I would love to hear from someone who has purchased one of these, I'd love to see hand shots.

Definitely agree with this. I have so many "acquaintances" that have these types of rings and they just kill me every time I see them! I feel like the only reason people like them is because they want to seem like they have a large diamond. But really, it's obvious that it's an illusion setting. This is one of the things that BF has always agreed on with me. We both agreed when we first started discussing rings that one big, or even not so big, diamond is better than a ton of tiny diamonds. :knockout:

And THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!! I have NO IDEA why they are so popular. Makes NO sense to me AT ALL.

omg speaking of which, one of my coworkers was really excited to tell me that she and BF of 6 years went ring shopping again and it turned out "very well" to which I was uber excited for her because we talk about rings a lot at work LOL. then she showed me a picture of it on the website and it was a 4-princess quad with halo. I almost cried...I had no idea what to say to her. she tells me that she thought the quad sparkles more than a regular one-princess with halo and I just didn't know what to say I was so stunned. ahhhhh so frustrating!!!!

I don't particularly care for illusion settings, but it's okay by me if other people like them and wear them. Not my ring.

If you don't feel like you "belong", then don't post :saint:

I don't see what the point is in coming here to get all upset about people's opinions. Illusion settings are pieces of lies. Nothing but lies, I say!.

There are some beautiful illusion settings from the 1940s and earlier. For a couple on a tight budget, those vintage sets can be a wonderful option. I don't like the illusion settings for the 70s and later, but the older ones can be gorgeous. The metal work on some of the older settings is amazing.

audball has her beautiful diamond because she fell in love with a vintage set but missed out on it. I've acquired a collection of vintage rings recently because of the same thread that inspired audball.

I don't like those four-princess settings (or princess cuts at all, for that matter) or cluster rings, especially the one that have the big, flat head covered with bunches of small diamonds, set way high off the band. Ugh! I've seen clusters that were smaller, with something other than tiny diamonds, that don't look bad. Not what I'd choose but they aren't obviously big honking clusters.

My 3/4 carat OEC is in a setting that has a tiny ring of metal around the outside of the diamond. It's so subtle that you hardly see it, but it makes the diamond look much larger than it really is.

Here's a pretty vintage wedding set that was on ebay for $300. I spotted it yesterday afternoon, when I checked just now it had already sold. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's an old European cut diamond in an illusion setting.

get that picture out of here! this thread is for "odd" ones, only! LOL!

No, we were talking about moderns, hence the link to the Helzberg one. I know what you mean about those vintage square settings, or the old cluster ones. I actually LOVE old cluster ones that look like flowers.

But modern maul stores have taken illusion settings to a whole 'nother level. I forgot which desperate housewife of Atlanta it was that got a "huge" "honking" "6 carat ring", and I saw a picture of it in a gossip mag, and it was just 4 princesses put together. Yes, you're so rich, go show off all your money and your big fancy bling... but own up to the fact that you're NOT wearing a single 6 carat-er, but really just 4 half carats.

I just find it awfully pretentious. You might as well wear a sim, and claim that's real, too.

There's a huge difference between "tasteful" and "tacky", and these are all the latter.

Honestly, I think if a man resorts to buying THIS kind of stuff, I feel**** he's lazy and doesn't care "enough" for the gal. He's looking to get the biggest "finger coverage" on the dime. He's going to the only places that sell these: MAUL jewelry stores. He's not doing any research at all. Isn't the whole proposal about telling the gal how important she is to you? How important does one feel if the man just walks into any shopping mall, and walks into the first store to find the cheapest ring thats the worst quality? I thought the ring was supposed to represent the couple, and how he feels for the gal? Like, "I-love-you-so-much that I-saved-up-for-a-long-time to buy-you-this-perfect-ring?"

On a more personal experience-side, I have had a coworker who was proposed to with a dainty .25-er. Tiny. But it sparkled. She hated the ring, and kept talking about wanting to get a bigger one. She would always grab everyone else's hands to look at their rings. For her 1 year wedding anniversary, she traded in that tiny, but sparkly .25-er and got herself one of those 4 princesses stuck together, illusion rings. She started shoving it in everyone's faces because it had more finger coverage than everyone else's solitaires. It was "huge". I wanted to barf. I'd rather have kept the original .25-er.

***Stuck in the big "I feel", so no one feels like I'm speaking for them, or making a general statement. It's my opinion. I hope no one comes back to get their panties all up in a bunch over this.

Ladies please remember that there are many people who may be reading this thread right now who have the very rings you are all criticizing. Or who may be very happily wearing inexpensive rings and offended by the insensitive comments shared here.

We do not tolerate mean threads on Pricescope, this is not the spirit of the forum. Please remember that in the future when posting and think twice if you are planning on saying something mean.

You do not need a lot of money or expensive rings to post here and we want to keep it that way. Please be thoughtful.

Thank you, Ella, for moderating. I'll try to play nicer :sun:

But I have to ask. Isn't the point of PS to be an advocate for buyers? To educate? I don't see how it is "mean" that I say it's horrible to get a cluster of tiny frozen spit when someone can use that same amount of $ to buy a whole 1 stone that might be smaller in the "finger coverage" department, but is actually a thought-out, well educated, quality purchase? Isn't the whole purpose of PS to prevent people from overpaying for these kinds of things? Aren't these people just getting scammed into the whole "c.t.w." thing, because they're told it's "___" carats, rather than it's "___" c.t.w.? And why can't I say I don't like it?

And there have been a few threads in the past hosting "ugly" rings. Those weren't warned by you to "play nice"? Space ship-like rings, quadruple halos, the infamous crab pin.. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/unique-and-unusual-post-them-here.18524/. What about all those people who might own those rings? What if they're offended?

I'm just sayin'.

Only thing I'll say is the amount of money a man pays for a ring does not equal how much he loves you.

And, most men don't know how to research for a ring. I mean, look at the ones who do know well enough to come here how clueless they are -- bless their hearts. lol

I didn't say "if he doesn't spend a lot of $, he doesn't love you". I don't feel that at all. I have dated plenty of guys that were poor, and SO and I are both from dirt poor backgrounds that include bankruptcy, coming to the US from a 3rd world country, and not knowing where we'll get our next meals. That's why I mentioned that I'd rather have a plain band (or maybe a yummy antique filigree band?), which is cheaper, or nothing at all.

And I get that most men don't know anything about rings. Most people, regardless of gender, don't. I'm still learning. But it's that effort and research that shows, well, their effort. The guys coming in on RT all the time are adorable. They're soaking in as much info as possible. and it doesn't matter that they buy a $200 ring, or a $200,000 ring. They're getting the best they can for the one they love best. What bothers me is those guys who buy the first thing they see, and end up with a maul store piece that isn't even worth the $900 price tag.

IMO it's not about the money behind it. It's about the dedication to research and self-education.
