OEC diameter - correlation with carat weight?

Hi everyone,

Thanks to pricescope members for alerting me to the world of old cut diamonds!

I've been really keen to add an oec to my collection - but don't have the funds to get a large stone at this point. I have found a ring that has a smaller oec centerpiece- according to the seller it is 5mm diameter and she estimates it may be anywhere from 0.4-0.5 carat as older cut stones can't be measured so precisely within their setting.

Does anyone have an idea what 5mm might translate to in terms of carat size for an oec? Or is it hard to determine? The setting has an illusion head (platinum) which adds 1mm (total diameter 6mm)

Thanks in advance (and happy new year!)

5mm can be between .40-.50ct. I have a 4.9mm that weighs 0.43ct, but a deeper stone can easily weigh 0.50ct.

Thanks ForteKitty! My engagement ring (MRB) is 0.51 carat and just wondering if it would look comparable in terms of size. Guess ill find out in a few days when it arrives :D

It will depend on the cut; some are very shallow (face up big) and some are very deep (face up small) so it could be anywhere from 0.4 ct to 0.5 ct.

Good question!
