OEC or OMC?

Hi everyone! Newbie here. I inherited a diamond from my grandmother several months ago and boyfriend and we had it set and put aside for an engagement ring someday soon. When we got it appraised, the appraiser was sure it was an Old Mine cut but every jeweler I bring it to says its for sure and Old European cut. Now I am curious what the experts have to say.

Pardon the pictures, I never realized how tough it was to take photos of sparkly things.

I have been lurking for a while and appreciate all the knowledge on these boards- you are all great! Thank you!

Oh my  what a beautiful ring-love that setting!! Sorry I don't know if it's an OMC or OEC but I know one of the old cut experts will be chiming in here soon. Just wanted to say what a lovely ring!

Thanks Missy! It's actually in a different setting now... we had issues with diamonds falling out and some tarnishing on the original. Ill try and find a pic with the new setting. Thank you for your kind words. :))

The terms aren't always used consistently, but in general the OMC is a cushion cut with corner facets smaller than side facets, and the OEC is a round cut with all facets equal.

Round diamonds could not be cut until the invention of bruting, which turns two diamonds against each other and polishes them into rounds, so OMC proceeds OEC, but there is a lot of disagreement about when a OEC becomes a transitional or a round brilliant.

That's too bad about the original setting- it's a beauty!

As for OMC versus OEC, it could be a little hard to tell with your stone being set. That type of old setting tends to square things off a bit anyway. It clearly has a tiny little table like old stones do, but the pattern in the middle is a bit more flowery. I'm not an expert, so I won't make a guess and I'm not sure that other than for educational purposes, it really makes a big difference. It's just kind of fun to know, I understand. At least the jewelers got in the correct ball park didn't try to call it a rose cut!

Here's one from Old World Diamonds that is classified as OMC and has some similar characteristics:

And here's one that's nearly cushion shaped but called OEC...

The main difference I can see from his description is in the cutting on the pavilion. It's very different.

It's tough to say from the photos. Judging just by the pics, I'd lean towards OMC, however it could also be an early OEC. The faceting visible under the table could be OEC-ish, but the culet appears very large and the shape is difficult to discern from the setting but I'm getting an off round/slightly cushiony vibe. But again, it's so tough to tell, and there will always be those "in-between" stones too.

Whatever it is, it's beautiful - enjoy your one of a kind heirloom!

Thanks everyone. When I had it reset, I had the chance to look at the diamond and it was definitely more of a wonky cushion shape. The new setting definitely makes it appear more round now.

Just asking out of curiosity. :wink2:

Interesting that the shape is cushiony like an OMC yet the facet pattern (seen at the table) is OEC-like. It is difficult to tell because your pictures are not straight on and are also too far away to make out any details.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's like Erica said and is probably somewhere in between. I have a little one like that I'm saving for a pendant that my antique jeweler thinks is somewhere in between and OMC and OEC.

Maybe a really early OEC? I know the pictures aren't great. Still learning to take pictures of it. :wink2:

I was just thinking "oh that ring looks familiar" before I realized you had posted. :wavey: I would agree with the conclusions PP have come to...perhaps an early OEC due to the faceting but the shape does look more than round. Take more pics!!

beautiful stone!

Thanks!!

It looks more like an OMC to me.

Most everyone I know will think its a round anyway. :wink2: I was just really curious.

What a gorgeous ring (both versions - pre and post reset!) and the diamond is lovely and white!!! Enjoy it and wear in good health!

Thanks Enerchi! It faces up fairly white for an L-M. Now if only I could wear it! Hehe :naughty:

A cushioney OEC

Either way it is a lovely stone!

You just give that boy a poke and tell him... "hey! I want my grandmothers ring--- PROPOSE, BUDDY!!!" (ya, I'm sure that would go over well! - NOT)

Hope you get to wear it very soon - it is a beauty!! :halo:
