Congratulations,

That is so cool. You got to be surprised, but still get to be a part of the diamond stone choosing.

Here is our engagement story as penned by the love of my life:

I called out to Jayme that we needed to cross the street and cut through the school yard. We just got matching Electra Townie bicycles the week before and we'd been planning for a week to ride them the 12 kilometers from our house to the Urban Diner, our favorite spot for brunch. We pedaled into the school yard on 106 St. when Jayme noticed the ten dozen red roses arranged on the grass. I have to say, I was even impressed at the display as some of the roses were standing, punched into the ground, and the others were laid out beneath them.

"Wow, look at all the roses!", Jayme exclaimed. I had been a little over-sensitive to whether or not I had tipped her off in advance so I asked,
"What do you think their here for?" And without missing a beat, Jayme confirmed she was clueless...
"I think this is a memorial to that kid that died.", she said in reference to a young man that had killed himself a few days prior. Oh good, I thought to myself sarcastically, we've now set the bar at sadness so we can only go up from here.

I suggested that we stop and take a break so we got off the bikes and when Jayme took off her helmet I grabbed her hand. At that moment Jayme's disposition changed; I'm quite certain it was from clueless, through realization, and straight into shock. I led her among the flowers and lowered myself to one knee; it's only been a handful of times in the five years we've been together that Jayme has blushed, but this was one of them. I reached into my pocket and produced, of all things, a twist tie. I asked Jayme to marry me, and she promptly said yes.

It's in moments like this that everything seems in slow motion, like the earth has lost power and is simply coasting on it's axis; but even by that perception it was an instant until she said,

"Okay, where's the ring?"

As if to communicate, this has been cute but you had better not be yanking my chain. So I curled my fingers between my lips and let out a shrill whistle. From around the side of the old school, at full steam, appears our bulldog, Chunks. For those that aren't familiar with bulldogs, you may be surprised that he was heading the wrong direction, but we weren't. With us both calling it took Chunks a moment to get his bearings, realize that he recognized us, then maneuver his full speed self to turn toward us. Chunks was ultra excited as he came charging forward, wearing a bow tie and a string around his neck which secured the diamond ring...

Jayme was beaming as I loosed the ring and presented it to her. I'll never forget her first response,

"Is this a real diamond or CZ?"

Okay, I thought, she's still in shock. She was right, but I had done careful research and there was no way for her to tell... Okay readers, before you turn on me, read further.

Also from around the side of the school; my partner in crime, Matt, came up and joined us to take a couple pictures. I snipped the roses and put them into her bicycle basket and we rode for brunch. The day was brighter, the food was better, and the atmosphere was brilliant as we sat on the patio enjoying french toast. Jayme abandoned her meal and was admiring her ring as I explained the details of the custom setting:

I explained that I had been listening to her so the classic Tiffany's setting was altered to contain a knife edge, widened slightly and made of 18K white gold as opposed to platinum so that the flat surfaces would shine instead of cloud with platinum’s tell tale patina. The six prong style was chosen so the head of the ring gives the appearance of a crown and claw type prongs grip the stone well but give a softer appearance. Normally, the base of the head would round off but I had that changed so that the engagement ring would sit flush against a wedding ring that didn't require it to be notched. Then, on the inside, where only she would know they were there, were our birth stones set side by each.

Then I told her about the second part of this gift.

Jayme has been doing research for years in regards to diamonds. Anytime we have ever been to a jeweler it was clear within minutes that Jayme was either more knowledgable, or that she could easily disarm them with a well researched argument. In our relationship, we have always been interdependent and supportive of each others strengths, accepting of each others limitations and willing to yield to each others unique skill sets. When I thought of buying jewelry I originally felt very disadvantaged in doing this alone but it was important for me to preserve a traditional engagement. So, after hours on the internet and going to every jeweler in town I was able to buy a setting without the commitment of buying a diamond from the same jeweler. The second part of her engagement gift was a considerable budget to shop for her own diamond. Jayme was ecstatic.

So this is when she chooses to confess to me that she's been shopping for diamonds online for months, and even though she had promised to spare me from the constant pressure of her internet shopping she had continued in secrecy. She had already bought the gemologist tools to examine a potential diamond that would be shipped to her and within 6 minutes of us arriving home she had updated her Facebook relationship status and had a 1.5 carat ideal cut brilliant round diamond ready to ship on Tuesday.

A lot of who Jayme is and why I adore her is owed to her mother. Trish is responsible for Jayme's unrelenting drive, her unfiltered quick wit, her strong sense of responsibility and her selfless generosity. In a very linear fashion, Jayme secured her diamond and then turned to me and said it was time to get my engagement present. We had been talking about it for months but, with a tradition that started with her mom, Jayme was determined to buy me a timeless gift that would mean as much to me as her ring meant to her. It turns out that one of three North American retailers for the time piece that influenced Standard Time in North America is here in Edmonton. Webster C. Ball was given the responsibility of managing and maintaining registered time pieces for rail roads in the United States after a head on collision between two locomotives in Kipton, Ohio in 1891. The accuracy of his system and time pieces became the bench mark throughout the rail road community so much so that as the five o'clock train would whistle through a town the residents would set their clocks by it and then declare their household "on the Ball." I am now the grateful and proud owner of number 602 of the 999 Ball TrainMaster Moonlight Special Limited Edition wrist watches ever made. Jayme knows full well that “yes” was everything I needed but I have to tell you, there are a million reasons I would marry her a million times.

I have had several people ask me how I got a girl like Jayme. My immediate response is a sarcastic self defense about my unique combination of wealth and being gifted anatomically but I would have to say truthfully it's a sense of requirement. When we met, I was just a guy getting a flu shot. I had recently taken a risky change of careers and to be measured by my 2002 Corolla with "do it yourself" windows wouldn't have done me well. I guess that particular experience was spared from my first impression as she had to drive on our first date considering my license was suspended in relation to my creative understanding of motorcycle operation on public roads. I was living as a tenant to a friend and I once used the last dollars I had to send her a champagne and Hershey Kisses as room service when she was snow boarding in Banff. I was nothing to speak of and she was accomplished, beautiful and the funnest person I have ever met.

Jayme took a chance on me, and the requirement of living up to be the man that she deserves has shaped every day of my life since the day we met.
