FF and I are hosting Thanksgiving at our home (that we purchased together in the Spring) this year and it will be the first time that all of our parents will be together with us. In addition to the parents we will also be having FF''s little brother and the foreign student (and girlfriend) who currently lives with my parents.
I went and took one of the classes that Pottery Barn offers on decorating and they showed us how to use stuff like charger plates and salad plates and simple centerpieces. My mother isn''t exactly Martha Stewart so we didn''t use such things at our house growing up but I can totally get excited about having napkin rings and place mats.
So after this class I was on a mission- to collect the items necessary to have a "proper" place setting with an ice water goblet, wine glass, flatware (which we already had some nice stuff from FF''s parents), simple white dinner plates, place mats, cloth napkins, napkin rings, and a colorful salad plate.
My first stop was the Pottery Barn outlet, which is about an hour drive from my home in PA. I way overspent on these colorful patterned cloth napkins. Since they were so festive I decided to base the rest of my choices off of these napkins. I also managed to score some of their Caterer''s Box dinner plates. They didn''t have a full set so they gave them to me 50% off (the already discounted outlet price) and I only had to pay for what I got (9 of them.. an odd number but it happens to be the amount of people we''re having over for Thanksgiving).
My mother gave me a ton of my grandmother''s old glassware from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that she used when she hosted dinner parties. I scored some awesome tall stemmed balloon wine glasses from Christmas Tree Shop really cheap and also managed to find linen and cotton hemstitch placemats. All I have left to find are the napkin rings and this isn''t even totally necessary.
I also made a centerpiece using an inexpensive hurricane candle holder, a 3x3 ivory colored pillar candle, and a little bag of stones that I purchased from IKEA.
The whole thing cost me $9.70 a place setting (not including the flatware we already owned) and $7.50 for the centerpiece ($1.50 of that was the candle). Oddly the napkins were the most expensive part at $3.70 a piece!
I just wanted to share some pictures with my fellow Susie Home-makers out there. I am quite pleased with how everything turned out!
Side note- When I was home getting the glassware my mother also gave me a bunch of silver serveware that had belonged to my great grandmother as well as a cut-glass creamer and sugar bowl. Amongst the glassware was also these really old fashioned champagne glasses. I haven''t polished the silver yet but I will include a shot of the gorgeous creamer, sugar bowl, and champagne glass.
