Oh, how overwhelming! (Sapphire/Three Stone) (E-Ring)

This is the beginning, I suppose.

I'm divided on how to start. I've seen posts saying the gemstone is obviously where you start, as the perfect gemstone for me will be much harder to come across than the setting. Then again, I've also seen posts that say some stones do not fit in some settings, so it may be best to find a setting first?

Also, I live in NYC. I've been to T&Co, and also to a few places on 47th, and found it tiring, especially 47th -- I felt very outnumbered and outmatched, with all the pressure on a quick sale. I am more than willing to go places here, LI, etc.

IN any event... here are my thoughts.

The Stone

I am guessing at minimum 2.0 or maybe 2.5ct? Before she decided she likes sapphires with diamonds on the side rather than a diamond center stone, I was looking at 1.5-2.0ct diamonds. Does that translate well?

I don't think I care about heat - I don't want any treatments that are going to fade over time.

As far as color...I want what everyone here seems to want. The sarahbear/Justin_Cutter/etc. bright glowing piercing striking blue that isn't cold, dull, gray, or lifeless like Kate Middleton's ring.

I have seen referenced $1,000/ct -- how accurate is that?

I looked at some of the major vendors that get props here and didn't see anything that looked right color-wise and size-wise... (atggems, mastercutgems, gemfix)...

Simple three stone in either white gold or platinum (?), probably .5ct or so on each side? Round as well.

The hardest part is going to be finding the right sapphires. Diamonds can be had in any shape of size and that is an easy style setting to find. Most jewelers could do it for you.
Have you looked around much for a sapphire? There is a list of vendors that people have used here in this forum. A few come to mind are gemfix, mastercutgems, simplysapphires.

Well having an idea of the type of setting you like and where you want to buy it from is a good idea. But buying the setting isn't because then you'll be limited with the size of the center stone.

I've also kind of gotten sucked into this Richard Homer concave-cut sapphire thing. I wish there was somewhere I could see his work in person (as it's sort of hard to see exactly what it looks like from 2d pictures alone)...

He's a popular cutter and although I don't own any of his stones I know there are people on PS that do. Have you done a search for his stones here on PS? Maybe you need to see a video?

Just throwing it out here: heat treatment in sapphires (or even Be treatment for that matter) is stable and permanent. As such, I wouldn't rule out traditional heat just yet.

Settings can be custom made, and by limiting the size of the stone, your choices are consequently limited. Hence, most people would recommend you start with the stone.

So...what faceup size are you going for? 2- 2.5 carat doesn't say much at all. The faceup size can vary greatly, depending on how the stone is cut. Some stones might also face up larger than their size, which is the reason why I am asking.

Looks like you are basically looking for a round stone. Before I start throwing out suggestions, there are a few things that need consideration first, namely your budget to see what is realistic. What is your total budget? From there, I can deduct the cost of the setting to know what is left for the stone(s). 3 stone settings are dime a dozen since you have selected all rounds. Getting the right round blue sapphire will be the more difficult task. If you wanted ovals or some other shape, then you could possible need to go custom if the stone isn't a calibrated size but no worries here due to your requirement.

In a diamond, 1.5 ct to 2 ct round equates to approximately 7.5 mm to 8 mm. It is more accurate to go by face up size since the carat weight will vary due to the cut. This means that you are looking at sapphires of around 2 ct to 2.5 ct. Heat treatment is stable and permanent. I would not go the route of BE diffusion, especially for an e-ring because the entire internal makeup of the sapphire has been drastically altered too much to be acceptable in my mind. In terms of pricing, $1k/ct is far too low for a 2 ct stone. Even presuming heat treatment only, you are looking at $2000/ct at the very least.
