The ring came back as platinum when the jeweler tested it. Center stone is an old euro cut. I measured the center stone myself (5.4x4.8 ), and it is a 1.03cts! I was told it was .6ish when it was sold to me (owners guestimate). It is VVS Clarity. I cannot find a single inclusion within the stone.

The 4 old mine cut stones total about 1.15cts, and the 12 smaller OMC stones total about 1.25cts. That brings a total educated estimate diamond weight to 3.4CTTW!

The center stone has moderate yellow flour, so it looks more yellow in sunlight. The color is truer in the outdoor shots then the indoor hand shot (although a bit more yellow and less 'brown' then in the pics). The whole ring sparkles like MAD. The center stone throws off prisim flashes and strong yellow and red flashes.

The ring is from late 1800s. Around when they first started using platinum. There is no stamp in the ring, the jeweler who sold it to me (and collects) told me thats common in very early platinum jewelry because of the hardness.

The first 3 pics are taken in natural diffused sunlight. 4th is indoors, and pretty shaded.

So still think $1500 is a deal?

Beautiful unique piece! Congrats!

It's stunning! Congratulations. Price sounds more than fair to me.

Beautiful!

Nice buy rock hugger!

I love those old settings! Truly works of art! It looks great on your hand and I think you got a great deal! Enjoy it!

Wow--what a find! congratulations! :appl:

I think it classifies as a steal rather than a deal...very nice!

awesome ring and what a buy!!!!!!

That's really really cool.
Is the center stone a diamond?

Great find! That's quite a substantial ring! :appl:

amazing! OMG I a COVETOUS!

That is really cool! What a unique and elegant piece!

I can finally see it now that I am home. Yay, what a stunning ring. Great find RH!! Wow, it's in awesome condition for 1875! The millgrain is still there. That typically wears down after years of use. Are you sure it's not Edwardian? It looks Edwardian to Deco period, which is a great period for jewelry, and a lot of millgrain was used during that period as well.

The center diamond is really beautiful, and well cut. I love the chunky facets. You got a great price on it, you lucky duck!

Thank you all for the wonderful compliments! I really do love it! It is going to replace my E-Ring.

Kenny- yes, the center stone is a VVS vivid yellow orange diamond (its more yellow then the pictures). A little over a ct.

TL- The ring looks like it has never ever been worn. There is absolutely no wear to the milligraining what so ever. No scratches, or gouges either. And the diamonds have no signs of wear either. Perfectly clean facet junctions (other then typical OMC faceting crazyness) and no chips or dings. The center stone has NO damage at all, even at 10x. The jeweler said it looks like it was either worn very little or just kept in a safe.

As for the age, I was also thinking it was art deco, except for the fact all the small stones are OMC, not OEC or single cuts. Around art deco time period they started using the single cut melees, or a mini OEC cut for the small stones. WHy would they bother with the 'messy' OMCs in a fine piece, if the cleaner cuts were available? Also, with the center stone it is early OEC, not transitional OEC....wich is also used alot in 1910+ art deco jewelry. A couple things me and the jeweler were 'geeking' out about LOL. And we both finally came to the conclusion it is an early platinum piece. It might be early edwardian though. He thinks the person who origionally made the piece had money, because the size of the stones, and the detail of the piece.

It could be a modern replica vintage piece set with older stones to make it look like it's older, hence the very little wear. Regardless of the age, the stones are very beautiful, as well as the design and worth every penny you paid plus some. However, that would also explain why it's an Edwardian/Deco piece set with OMC's. The stones could be old, but not the ring. Platinum also gets a patina after a while and looks greyish. The metal on that ring is very bright still, which tells me it was kept away from air for 80 to 100 years (unlikely unless you live on the moon), or replated recently, or a newer piece.

If you're seriously interested in confirming it's age, perhaps post it in the jewelry section too. A lot of antique junkies live there. You also need to post it in SMTB.

TL could not have said it any better. Beautiful platinum vintage setting, beautiful center stone that reaches the 1 ct mark, and for $1500???? Just the setting alone would cost over $1500.

Rockhugger, you did really, really, really well and I'm so glad you went with your instinct and snatched it up. I am the same way, when I have a strong feeling about a stone or setting, I grab it before it's too late.

The only thing about colored diamonds is that once the bug bites you, there's no turning back.

Enjoy your new ring!!! It's definitely an heirloom piece. :appl:

Rockhugger, That is awesome, everything about it, The stone has amazing color, the setting is sharp and the finger coverage!! It is perfect!

Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooolinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggg!

It is just stunning, I can see why you snapped that up! It looks beautiful on you too! :appl:

TL- the ring actually has a greyish color to it. The band is VERY white, because he polished it nice, but left the head so it wouldnt mess up the milligraining. I thought the grey thing was just normal platinum color(I have never owned platinum). He told me when I first saw it, it was a 18kt white gold, but I asked him to test it before sizing because of the tint and I actually was worried it was silver that was lightly tarnishing (mostly noticable on the underside of the ring).

I guess its not very visable in the photos but its there, and I actually like it because it gives the ring charm and the genuine antique look.

I apprecieate your input on it though, and will for sure post it in the antique forum tomarrow to know for sure!
ETA: I found an appraiser who specializes in antique jewelry. I am going to take it to him next week to find out the settings age for sure. I need to get it added to my insurance anyway :)

I was actually telling the jeweler I would rather have a stone with color then a white one and he looked at me like I was INSANE! I think they have more life in them then a typical white stone.

There was no way I was going to let this one go. I was actually in the market for a smaller stone/ring...but when I heard 1500 it all changed LOL!!

It's so pretty!

Gorgeous!!

I can't believe you posted this. The internet is now considered 'evidence'. $1500 for that is not a deal, that is Grand Theft!

Killer deal for that. The platinum alone is that detail is worth the price of admission. Plus the colored diamond. Plus the accompanying stones (which look good). Plus an antique in that style. Sweet deal. Way to go. :appl:

Even if the setting turns not to be a replica, the stones, platinum setting and labour for all that is probably worth more than what you paid. It is too chunky for my taste but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate looking at it. Lovely ring and the OEC is very well cut.

Yes, the center OEC is worth the price of the whole ring, at the very least.

I don't care for antique or antique looking rings on me personally, but I certainly appreciate their beauty, and this one looks to be a real beauty... congratulations on a great find.
