I''ve seen a few comments about how '' no one can tell the difference'' or ''people don''t ask about the color anyway'' or things like that - do we buy and wear diamonds for OTHER people? or for ourselves?
will people know I have a D color diamond - no, probably not. but i know. do they know if it''s a vvs or an si? no, again, probably not. but i know. and isn''t that what the bottom line is?
That was very well said AlJ!Date: 3/28/2006 12:08:06 PM

I buy diamonds for myself, and I don''t care if others would choose as I do. However, I couldn''t feel good about paying for a D stone and wearing it when I know that I could get materially the same look for a lot less money. It would be like paying $28 for a loaf of bread......even if I had the $28 to blow, the lack of value would kill my enjoyment of it.
For you, knowing that your diamond is a D satisfies your mind. It feels exclusive to you, and you are willing to pay for that exclusivity. That''s wonderful, and if that''s important to you, by all means, you should stick with a D. Others who don''t value exclusivity are less willing to pay for it.
For you, knowing you have a D makes you happy. For me, knowing I paid for a D would make me feel wasteful and overindulgent. It''s just a difference in what we place importance on.
well...you hear a few near colorless owners saying....i like a little warmth color...i don''t like colorless stones,looks fake.now, when it''s FREEDate: 3/28/2006 5:07:49 AM

Good question... ''would you prefer to get a big gift or a small one, no questions asked''![]()
Looks like the answer is darn obvious and has absolutely nothing to do with diamond grades![]()

Yeah, but Dancing Fire says they are GIVING it to you! No chance to take the difference between a D and an H and give the savings to charity! Sooooo. . . . if they are giving it away I'll take it!
I''d still get the D!Date: 3/28/2006 2:42:19 PM

Okay so what if it was this scenario instead:
You had the opportunity to buy a 2c D or colorless stone from Tiff for $15k OR a 2c near-colorless H/I stone from Tiff for $15k. Cuts are the same and clarity is the same (aka VS).
Now you are no longer being GIVEN the stone, you have to pay one way or the other for it. So selling it doesn''t seem like such a good deal to get a bigger stone etc. Which color would you prefer to wear on your finger?
I''d still get the H stone.
I''d go with the D mainly because I can''t see paying the same for a lower color when I know the D is worth more. You are getting (ok, paying for, but still) something for less than it''s worth. It would also be cool in the ego sense to say I had a 2ct D from Tiffany''s, which I would never in this reality have anyway (or pay for, even if I could afford it!).Date: 3/28/2006 2:42:19 PM

I agree - very well said, but again, we don''t buy diamonds to please others - we buy them to please ourselves. I do choose D and as clear as I can find - at the sacrifice of size, because with cut being equal - i would choose to wear the diamond that is as close to flawless as I can find and am comfortable with, for my budget.Date: 3/28/2006 12:08:06 PM

People were emphasizing how they are being GIVEN a FREE stone so why wouldn't they take a D. But it seems in this case people would still buy a D over an H...better deal for the D because it's cheaper, or BECAUSE that's the color they actually want on their finger? I could get past the fact that a D is more expensive or whatever because I know I'd want an H or similar on my finger and not a D. It's too white.Date: 3/28/2006 3:29:55 PM

If the price is the same I'm still getting the D. Why would I pay $15000 for an H when I can pay $15000 for a D? Am I missing something? (Yeah, I should be working that's what!)
No, that isn''t what many are saying.Date: 3/28/2006 2:36:48 PM

all of sudden they love a D color![]()

what i try to say is ...G-J owners buy b/c they think it''s better value for the money not b/c they don''t like colorless stonesand there''s nothing wrong with that.![]()

Precisely. Choosing the diamond that *is* worth more gives the owner further options w/ a bigger pocketbook. Fact is that a "D" does command more money. The "more money" is not worth it to me to spend on it; but, I certainly would take the "more money" & divest.Date: 3/28/2006 5:16:53 PM

Definitely a D (or a rare color). It has nothing to do with what I prefer to wear myself. If it''s free, of course I''d pick the one worth the most. Since I don''t have to have a D color or a Tiffany, I''d probably try to sell or swap it for something with more ''value'' to me.![]()
