From 1981:

Shape: Pear
Cut: Fair
Clarity: VVS2
Color: Crystal
Appraisal values in 1981 dollars: $850 (Macy''s) and $2000 (Jeweler).

Crystal? Crystal? What does that mean? Maybe the values will help to put a color grade on this thing?

The Macy''s Appraisal is verbal only with no concrete stuff. It looks like it says Top Jelery Cope for the color comment. It''s in really awful script. This is a heirloom ring.

Haha, oh I will eventually. Not urgent right now, I''ll be holding on to this. Part of me doesn''t want to know specifics. Part of me is very curious what the hell "Crystal" color means in the jewelry business.

Hi Dice

" Crystal" in diamond colour comes from the old colour grading where names were used for the various diamond colour ranges.

I Slightly Tinted White Top Crystal (TCR)
J
K Tinted White Crystal (CR)

From the info we have your diamond is according to the info you have, probably within K colour range, but an appraiser would be able to tell you for sure what you actually have.

When you refer to the description in your second post " top jewelry cape" the cape colours are lower down the colour scale to crystal which can refer to the L M colour grades.

L Top Cape (TCA)

M Yellowish Cape (CA)

N Light Yellow
