Old Euro Cut 1.4 carat, J/K, S2 Opinion

Hi Everyone-
Okay- I have been a lurker for some time now- getting educated etc on the OEC. I have been looking around and have found this ring:

I am curious to see what you think-
If you read the description it says to be a J/K color S2 clarity.
I love the warmness of OEC's so am not scared to get a warm one- I want to set it in a buttery yellow gold setting anyway and love the warmth.
I just am not sure if this diamond is spotty yellow??? I asked the seller about dimensions- he says it is a 7.6 mm diam and 5.75 mm depth- I think that is some nice spread in comparison.
He says it is "well cut", slight yellow. Is it me or is it too yellow for being a J/K? Which makes me question if the clarity is an S2. I have other questions in on the ring and clarity in, but your expert opinion would be so wonderful. Is it priced right? Or would you pay less or more not knowing? There is a 14 day return time though.
What do you think????

Looks lower than J/K, but could be the lighting. I would start the guessing at M/N,

It looks warmer in the pictures than a J/K and it seems like the color they state is just the cendor's estimate. You should probably look for a GIA-graded stone if you want an accurate color assessment.

OP: if you want to peruse eBay, take advantage of listings with a return policy with at least 7 days. I prefer 14, just because I know how hard it is to get an appointment with a proper appraiser. Make sure the appraiser you bring it to is an independent one, not a jeweler. Find one that does NOT sell jewelry.


This specific one: It looks like a wonky stone, so if you like wonky (I do), it can be a good try. I love it's setting. The clarity is listed as SI2-I1, so I'm betting anything it's AT LEAST an I1. *I* don't prefer inclusions on my rings, though I am "lenient" with inclusions. If it doesn't bother you, go for it! Can you ask for better photos? I'm pretty sure it isn't J-K, but then I also realized that the setting is platinum but it looks yellowish, too. Can it just be the camera/pictures tinting everything extra yellow? I love that setting, BTW.

Madelise hit the nail on the head. I tried to pull some comps on M/N color I1 stones of that size and couldn't, but my bet is that the ring is overpriced for what it is. However, if YOU love it, that's what matters.

Because you haven't purchased it yet and are asking for honest opinions, I am not a fan. It is too wonky for my taste and the color is FAR lower than what they have it listed as. My Poppy is between M-P (depending on which appraisal you want to use) - she doesn't look half as warm as that stone. If you popped that in a yellow gold cup, I reckon it would look like a yellow diamond (maybe U/V?). If you're interested in that, it might be a good way to go. But if you're looking for a white stone, around J/K, this is not it. I imagine the inclusions would be visible as well, with that SI2 clarity (judging by how 'accurate' their color statement is). I think the stone is overpriced. If you love it anyway, I'd get in touch with the vendor, point out how low the color is, and start negotiating the price down.

I dont' mind the ring or the diamond- I sort of like the wonky shape with that setting. However I agree that the ebay lister is smoking something if they think that is a J/K. I would put it clsoer to a Q/R. I agree with Ginger if you set it in yellow gold or did a yellow cup people would think it was a yellow diamond.

I think the price is ok but I bet you could negotiate them down since J/K is misrepresentation. Make sure you have a good return policey so you can have it appraised. I wouldn't bother with a report since this is an old cut. A good appraiser will work just fine.

i agree with the comments on color and its affect of the value. also the first photo that shows it almost face on makes the stone look more like an OMC or cushion to me...

Looks like the seller has a return policy so you could try it out if you think you'd really like it.

Lol, why are you apologizing? This is RT, we're all here to learn Hers has a GIA, and so does mine. But yes, it definitely is just the exception. If you want to see, you can just go to OWD's website and sift through their inventory I truly do wish this will change in the future, though. I hated that I couldn't compare stones apples-to-apples.



OP: If you truly love the wonk, and love the ring, try haggling the price down first. Then see it in person with your best objective eye. Then bring it to an appraiser, and see if it's worth the $ you spent on it. I would definitely want more pictures, though. And I still feel like the photos are unfairly tinted warmer. That platinum looks like my unplated 14kt WG...

I agree with others regarding color, and also that you need more photos. Can you ask for one good close up, facing the camera with no tilt? A photo like that might give you the answer. To me this looks like an Old Mine Cut, not old euro. That could answer for some of its wonk. I do kind of like this stone, especially with that spread. But watch out for weirdness under the table, fisheye and nailhead and such. Keep us posted!

I love old cuts and this seems to be more of a mine cut than OEC. The cut is wonky- which is usually charming, but I think this one will not be sparkly. It is really off center and I wonder if a major chip was polished out. It is also very low color- also not an issue if you like this, but not a J/K color at all. I agree to ask for more pics. Preferably close up and not tilted.

It is like you were all in my head with all the ideas and doubts I had!
I guess I am learning- I do like the old mine cut- and was thinking that that is what it was- but I asked about dimensions and he said it was 7.6 mm all around....I am going to ask for more pics (head on especially) and go from there-
I am also glad to know your color guesses were exactly like I was thinking more warm but the white gold setting also looks goldish too.....I was thinking that but did not think that the pics may be set warmer than what they are----I will ask for pics and see from there- but I was definitely going to negotiate down with all this to back up....not sure about gambling on the S2 or lower possibility----with the off color -the clarity may be just as off- I will keep you all updated!
