Opinion: Are necklaces (not pendants) not as common as other types of jewelry? Why?

I have a few pendants that are gold and/or stones. I don't even wear pendants. If I wear anything, it is the Marla Aaron locks and chain. Pendants feel heavy and bulky. Necklaces, even worse. I am also not a small person and I think that most things look ridiculous on me because I'm not a tall slim woman that is delicate. They disappear or look in miniature, so I just don't wear them.

For me personally it’s a neckline issue. Whatever I’m wearing it’s not going to affect whether a ring looks good (I’m ignoring colour for now). But every neckline requires a slightly different necklace length / style / weight etc. And I have turtle necks, deep v necks, wrap tops, boat necks etc… All different.

The reason you tend to see staples like solitaire pendants and pearls is that they pretty much go with anything - so it’s worth spending money as you get wear out of it.

I also can’t wear round necklines - look dreadful on me. So the only necklaces I would wear would be a pendant, a lariat (both giving a v-shaped neckline) or a long opera length. A standard length necklace of any kind would create that round neckline which looks gross.

I suspect many other round faced people will have the same issue. Hence - less necklaces.

I had thought about having a fairly significant gemstone necklace made BUT I wouldn't wear it often since it would be fairly "Fancy" and I really have at most 1-2 events like that each year. I'm having a fancyish chain and detachable pendant made instead. I think I'll get to wear and enjoy it more that way.

Wearability is definitely an important factor. Though i do wish you'd go for the gemstone necklace over the pendant for the "wow factor", a pendant would make much more sense!

I think both of you make similar points about it not suiting you that's why you don't wear them, so I clubbed my response together - I think it's a fair point. I personally feel like there are so many necklace styles that they work with all face shapes, but definitely necklines and budgets play a role.

Though I'm sure you see some wonderful necklaces on people in the ME, @lonysis! I attended a wedding in Dubai once and the jewelry I saw blew me away.

Absolutely! The Indian weddings I’ve been to have been incredible too. The intricacy of design and sheer weight of all that gold.

But for sheer blow you mind necklace bling check out this baby from the Dubai Gold and Diamond park. Every time I go there I try and pluck up the courage to ask to try it on but even my bravado fails given its magnificence :)

Omg those earrings! *drool*

That entire cabinet will just blow your socks off. I always pass by that window to gawp.

OH MY LORD. Please, please go try this on. Though it may be a dangerous slippery slope… if I wore that… I’d have to have that…..

I wonder if I sold a kidney whether I could swing it?

edit: have come back to stare at this pic multiple times. How big are those stones, do you reckon?

Swoon.

I have many pendants and necklaces. I rarely wear them.

Sorry I got these many years ago and wasn't really taking decent photos at that time.
You cannot make out the details. When I get an opportunity I will take photos of this pendant to try doing it justice.

Greg gave this to me right before we got married. There are diamonds in it but it's a bad photo. Much lovelier in person.

Unfortunately the only photo I have of my gorgeous antique onyx and diamond pendant. Again when I am back in NYC I will get it and take better photos if I remember.

My Anchor pendant on my gold choker. I have lots of gold pendants like this but no photos. One of my favorites is a solid gold pig. Oink.

I have many more necklaces and pendants. I just rarely wear them though because I prefer to be unencumbered for the most part and when I do wear jewelry it's mainly my ER and a pair of antique earrings.

you have such beautiful hair and a lovelly long neck
those gorgouse pretties are crying out to be worn

@AllAboardTheBlingTrain the reason I don't wear the necklaces is simply because I wear my little diamond heart pendant all the time and it goes with everything. It's just easier to not to have to make the decision in choosing something to go with whatever I'm wearing.

we were talking about big necklaces yesterday at work
someone said year my grandma wears huge pieces

am yet to identify age of said grandma ........

Do you also wear your heart pendant when you go out for a fancy event, eg a wedding?

I can see how it’s easier to have a staple piece that ties your whole look together and is like your signature!

I inherited an antique baroque freshwater pearl necklace that I have worn for special occasions. I have the original storage presentation box from Europe, it’s very special.

Like most who have commented, my lifestyle has become much more casual. I can’t wear heavier necklaces 24/7 and anything that needs to be removed after a work day doesn’t get worn anymore.

My first necklace purchase in years has been an 18” long 14kt rose gold paperclip chain. It’s light but a larger scale design. It can be worn comfortably all week. I was inspired by many of you to start a neckmess collection but haven’t gotten very far.

I also have a Tiffany Paloma Picasso Marakkesh sterling pendant necklace that I received as a gift and had worn every day for years. I just don’t wear sterling anymore. I love it so much I am searching for a gold version to purchase. IMG_7518.jpeg

I have worn a diamond pendant of some type or another for many years. It is the only piece of jewelry that I seldom take off except for cleaning. I find them easy and light to wear and can dress up or dress down well. While I admire pretty necklaces, they have just never been something that interest me. I don’t like the weight or feel of them for myself. I don’t wear turtlenecks for the same reason - lol! I am short and don’t have a long neck or torso. That probably factors in as well!

IMO one reason is the wearer can't see it without a mirror, though the same is true of earrings although they are more common than neck jewelry.

Wow, some pretty stuff in here. Makes me wish I liked the feel of stuff hanging around my neck. All I wear is the 24kt gold chain my husband gave me, and if it weren't from him I wouldn't even wear that.

for the longest time i always hated the feeling of anything heaver than a chain and only ever wore very light pendents, i felt nauseous with any forms of beads on from when i was a kid
but it just went away - i dont know when or why but it did
