Opinion on Russian Diamonds

I am considering purchasing an eternity ring that has diamonds that were mined and cut in Russia. The diamond broker (who I trust) states that Russian diamonds on the whole are very good and that the Russian diamong cutters cut for beauty as opposed to value making Russian diamonds some of the best diamonds on the market. I know that each stone is different and should be judged on its own regardless of where it comes from, but I was wondering about the reputation in general of Russian diamonds. Any input will be appreciated.

Diamond is diamond.
Russians are no different from businessfolks from other countries.
There may be good and bad ones, honest and dishonest ones, folks that cut diamonds well and poorly.

What you heard was sales hogwash from someone who wants you to buy what THEY sell.

If you want a well cut diamond forget about country of origin, mining or polishing.

Our company mainly manufacturers Russian cut diamonds. Russian cut diamonds are probably some of the best rough material to work with. Many times Russian diamonds and Canadian diamonds have a much less visible hue of florescence. For example Very Strong blue would look like faint. Also Russians diamonds are usually cut by the some of the best cutters in the world. Mainly these cutters use most of the rough material to create the perfect diamonds rather than making the diamonds a G-VG cut just to save on size. Hope that helps.

I am aware that certain parties are trying to market Russian diamonds as the next "clean" thing like Canadian diamonds have been.
To say they are better cut than any other cutting house is laughable and the marketing claims are funny.

I feel like we have sort of gotten away from what the OP is asking about. He has another thread on RT where he is considering purchasing a lg ct weight eternity band for his wife. The stones have all been graded by GIA but are Oval in shape and therefore have no cut grade. He is really just looking for information about whether or not there is a reason for him to be concerned about purchasing diamonds sourced and cut from Russia.

ETA ...and I'm quite sure that he isn't purchasing from a PS vendor or a trades member from this forum.

Only buy diamonds graded by GIA or AGS.
It doesn't matter where they were mined or polished.

If 99.999999999% of the diamonds from bumfluck have higher clarity or less fluorescence then they will get those grades from reputable labs.
I'd consider them equally desirable as diamonds that come from a country where only 0.000000000000000001% get those grades.

To the final customer, ALL that matters is the grades.
Seeking out diamonds from country x because more more of their diamonds get good grades is absurd.

An ounce of gold from a country that produces a zillion tons a day is just as desirable and valuable as an ounce of gold that comes from a country that produces an ounce a year.

A little history, debeers usto purchase all Russian diamonds during the soviet era. When their contract ended, Russian diamonds entered the us market in the early 1990's. The diamonds which were mainly cut at the Russian government diamond cutting facilities which were always cut to the highest grade by Tolkowsky standards. They would sacrifice size for quality, and that's why the Russian cut is known for.
