Opinion on the OEC that i have to have- my next project

Some of the recent posts (2012 xmas bling and octagon bezel) has got me thinking/ planning on another project...  i have a few and some have been shelved/ thrown out the window. So, being a slave to diamonds, i am thinking of getting an OEC ring for my left pinky finger. THere are too many variables and hence i am writing them down and hoping for some guidance on PS'ers out there who may have travelled through this design stage, to help me decide on where to with this project...

This is what i know i like:
Cut: OEC-my favourite round cut.
Size: 0.5ct... coverage between 5.5mm- 5.8mm
clarity SI1 or above
budget for entire project $2000; at a stretch $2500.

I need help with deciding on a number of things:
1)colour: as it will be sitting next to the LHR ring (photo attached).
2)setting: tension though i do like some of the antique settings out there. Enerchi, Elliemay, travellinggal, dreamer d.. the list is endless.....
3) metal colour: WG but depending on the colour of the OEC, i would go to YG or RG. I will leave this decision until i have made a decision on the colour of the diamond.

COLOUR

The Left hand ring is made of white gold and melee diamonds of G colour. I would assume SI1 clarity. I have not had the ring dipped since I got the ring maybe 3 yrs ago.

I like- E colour. With OEC, I like the E and I also like the M-J colours. Hence my quandry.
Given that it is LHR is white gold and melee diamonds are G colour, I am sure the E colour OEC would blend in nicely with a WG setting. Because i like the M-J colours of the OECs and i know that they will just be lovely and warm; the question is "would those warm colours work with the LHR being white?" would the diamond ring look too different to warrant looking at the M-J colours????

I only wish i got to the perth gtg to see and play with some of the beauties out there :((

following on from that is the colour of the metal band. if i chose the warm coloured diamonds, the metal band would follow either YG or RG. Then, would that sit ok next to the WG ring that i have?

Setting

a) I am a big fan of tension setting.
b)However, with the OEC, given the nature of the cut, a vintage/ antique setting would be the one that i prefer.
c) i would consider a signet type setting as well, as it is for my pinky finger

Any thoughts/ suggestions are greatly appreciated....

Attached is a photo of a ring on my ring finger.

Greg, if you're keen to see my antique stone which has been graded three times as an L, an M, and an O-P so you can see how that color range faces up in an old cut, let me know. I work in Nedlands and can duck out to grab a coffee one day. Maybe that will help you compare the color to your setting's melee. :))

thanx! i would love to do that... are you working through the xmas break? i go back on the 7th Jan...

And please don't think I'm ignoring you if I don't respond tonight. DH and I are both working at 7, so currently the only creature stirring in this house is me...and I'm going to be remedying that very shortly!

Oh yay Greg! :applaud: you're going for it! I'm so excited for you!

Sounds like a great project!!! I'd have a tendency to lean toward higher color in a stone that size because I think it will appear brighter.

I have started research on the 1/2 ct OEC and there is one that is i colour and it has fluorescence. Is that ok or still stick with the higher colour? I just love the warmer colours of the OEC. I will be seeing Justgingers Poppy soon. She is a big baby and it may give me an idea. But would like opinion on the Fluor on the OEC.

Mmmm that sounds yummy Greg. But it's all about whether you like the flour. I myself would like a fluorescence diamond!

Thanx yaytacori. I have read and seen flour on RB and like it. But because it is an OEC, I wonder if the optics changes??? OEC's are something different. I haven't seen postings of OEC with flour, yet. Being only 1/2 ct it may also help its coloring.

My only addition is that a half carat OEC will be smaller than 5.5-5.8mm.

The half carat OECs I have owned have been around 5.2mm. To get a spread like you want, you will likely need between a .65ct to a .80ct.

Thanx DD...still fairly new to OEC's, though have admired them for sometime....I will start another post when i have decided on the colour of the OEC. There are no vendors here is Perth, Western Australia to see these beauties. However, JustGinger and I are trying to catch up so i can DROOL (oops, i mean see) the colour and size of Poppy.

These cuts, I believe they only exist in USA or UK. :-(

I have started searching for the diamonds on OWD and JBEG. Would you recommend any other sites, DD, thee who have great knowledge in the area?

thanx

They are here - you just have to know where to look. :wink2: When we catch up, we can swing by a shop so you can see more than just Poppy. :))

You can always trawl through ebay, as I have been doing lately. I find it very therapeutic when there's so much poo going on in my house - log on and sift through hundreds of listings. There's also rubylane, but that tends to get a bit expensive - the vendors on there are sometimes under the impression that they have in their possession one of the last remnants from a great Egyptian diamond dynasty.

When you narrowed down your color preference, I'd email Adam directly at OWD. The stones he has listed online are a fraction of what is in his inventory - and all of those listed prices seem far more expensive than the quotes he gave me directly.

I second Sir Adam of the land of Old World Diamonds.
