So I really liked one of the Pd settings I''ve seen online, but wanted to get a GOG diamond to go with it. GOG told me that jewelers don''t like working with Pd because it is too soft. And also said recently a lady didn''t like her PD ring because it was lightweight and "tinny" looking.

Lightweight definitely does not bother me. But GOG seemed to think I should definitely NOT go w/Pd. This will set me at square one because I will have to choose a new setting, or sacrifice a lot of carat weight to go with Pt. Allergy issues so steering clear of white gold.

So white do you all think of Pd?

I never have been able to get used to palladium. It looks okay.....but not great, in my opinion. Kinda cheesy.

I would spend the extra bucks for platinum, or go with 18 karat white. Both are nicer looking, better feeling, and classier than palladium, in my opinion.

Wink commented in a recent thread that he really isn''t a fan of palladium either and may even stop offering it soon to customers..I"m with Rich..I''d just wait and save up a bit more and get platinum..

here''s the thread where Wink shares his opinion on palladium..

Interesting comments from the pros....glad I caught this. I did know many jewelers aren't familiar with it, and don't know how to properly work with it. So that would be something else to consider, having a jeweler in your area that does.

I would have to agree with saving up for a Plat setting if there are allergy issues.

That is an interesting comment, Ellen. I was thinking that palladium was a good alternative to platinum but after hearing from the pros I may change my mind. I do have to qualify that I have never seen palladium so I might not have liked it myself if I had seen it in person.

Other than being a ''tiny'' white gold alloy, I''d def go for platinum. To me, it would be a bad alternative, too different, locals wouldn''t even size palladium.

I have both and I agree that I really like my platinum MUCH better after a year or two of wear. I also don''t love the color of palladium compared to platinum...it looks like stainless steel or something.

Pd is a metal by itself, not a WG alloy although there is a WG/Pd alloy around.

Also, seems like Pd is not truly hypoallergenic, some people do in fact develop a reaction to it. If you are allergic, best to go Pt.

I don''t own any platinum, but after starting to develop an allergy to white gold I did buy a 2mm palladium (950 Ru) plain band. I wear it daily (2 months), and so far I''m very happy with it. I prefer the color to my 18kt white gold, it has stayed shiny and has worn well thus far. It is a little light weight for my tastes.

I really want platinum but to be honest, I can''t afford it right now! I need to reset my earrings and engagement ring (I rarely wear both now because they irritate my skin, especially the earrings), and if I wait for platinum I''ll be waiting longer to do so. I may just do that, though, as I''ve read conflicting opinions about palladium. And though I''m super happy with my plain band, I haven''t heard much about how palladium prongs stand up over time.

I love the slightly grey color of palladium. However, it it is more prone to cracking and all . . .

Thanks for chiming in Nei!

EDIT You switched on me, but the thanks still apply!

After about a year with my Palladium rings, here are my thoughts.

Pros:
The color. I love it.
The fact that it stays crazy shiny.
It was extremely cost effective.
It's lightweight, which I see as a plus.

Cons:
The inevitable scratches and dings are permanent. The smaller ones I had polished out, but unlike platinum, they can't smush the metal back into place, and unlike white gold, they can't rhodium it to fill in the nicks.

Would I get it again? Not for a solitaire or a plain band.

For a ring with sidestones, or pave, or even engraving, absolutely, because I really do like a lot of things about the metal. But the shiny unbroken surface of my solitaire unfortunately provides a perfect backdrop for the scratches. Which I seem to be stuck with.

ETA: I don't find the color tinny at all. In fact, I'd say it's actually warmer than my white gold pieces. *shrug*
