I just got a Prestige report back from AGL and my glowy cabs came back as "Natural Tourmaline" Variety "Paraiba-type". I'm quite excited that they are in fact "Paraibas" however, they are from Mozambique and not Brazil, so AGL calls them Paraiba-type, which is fine with me.

I truly have no idea what they are worth. I want to get a true appraisal of their real value, not some inflated price for insurance purposes. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them and set them or sell them, but knowing their value might help me make that decision. I also have two rings that I want to have appraised for the same reason.

I live in Northern Virginia, so I am a little over three hours from David Atlas in PA, but I'm very near Martin Fuller in VA. I've read good things about both of them on PS, but David Atlas seems to be more well known on this forum.

I'm not sure Martin appraises unset stones, but I can call tomorrow and verify that. If I decided to keep the stones/rings, I'm quite sure that both of them are more than qualified to give me an honest appraisal, so my question is about name recognition. Does Martin Fuller have the name recognition that David Atlas has and does that make a difference?

I'm not sure of the price difference, but I would imagine that they are probably in the same ballpark. The only obvious difference that I see from their websites is that David will do a verbal evaluation of what they would pay for the stones (I realize this will be way less than the appraisal value) if I chose to sell them to him (assuming they are something he might want).

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 I love those pariba-type cabs!! We're I closer, you'd have to make sure they were in a safe place or you'd have to send the police after me. :naughty:

They sound like very rare and specialized gems.
I'd contact the reputable vendors of such material and discuss what they'd sell them for.
Perhaps even consider shipping the gems and AGL reports to them, and paying them for their time and expertise.

Interesting suggestion, but the only vendor that I found in the US that has similar stones is Paraiba International in New York. I guess I could take a bus trip - lol, but truthfully, I would think I'd get a better idea of their actual value from a knowledeable appraiser.

http://www.paraibainternational.com/product_info.php?product=3897 Mine are 5.21 ctw and described as green blue, instead of blue green and these are from Brazil, but as far as comparables, this is as close as I could find.

Hunt Country is in Loudoun and they have two GG's onsite. They are not independent, cause, yanno, they're a jewelery store, but they do appraise and cut, so they are really familiar with the good stuff.

Colorluvr,
When it comes to appraisers, I'm sorry to say that in general, name recognition doesn't really matter because most people do not know who's who in the appraisal business unless you are really into gems, a dealer or somehow involved in the business. Even then, it's not a guarantee the person will know who they are.

Thanks everyone, for sharing your thoughts and opinions (except of course for Uppy's last comment, and for the record, yes, they are in a safe place  )
