Opinions on Georgian Burmese Spinel and rose cut diamond Ring

This ring is new with no vintage-looking elements, but the price for what you're getting is quite impressive. This is the same US seller as the first ruby ring I posted. Again, the listing says untreated Mozambique. I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I don't know how important treatment is to you at this size/price point, but you might want to inquire about the ruby being certified.

Wanted to show you this garnet so you can see how much more substance you'd be getting for the money. Again, no antique elements, but it's big, red, and brand new. :D

I was also wondering how you feel about cabochons? I noticed there are more vintage ruby and garnet cab rings around.

Spinels can be polished. Just saying.

Yes, I have considered refurbishing an old stone, but then the cost of the polish, incurred fees and resetting etc don’t make sense for me, being such a low budget I think.

I forgot OP was in OZ (that rhymes), so I was mostly browsing US sellers. But since you mentioned ruby as your first choice, I figured it wouldn't hurt to include this piece I found...

The ruby is listed as untreated Mozambique. For this price, of course, it's going to be on the smaller side (half carat), but the color and clarity look great. What caught my eye was that, although this is a modern piece, the larger pear diamonds are rose cut. So that would give you a bit of the antique vibe. Just something to consider if you like the style.

I really like this one- the thing that baulks me with items like this is that you dont get to choose the stones used in your ring, as they are multiples. Am I understanding that right? The centre and/or the side stones. I would be worried the pears may be poor quality. Have you purchased something like this?

So in this case, it could be 2 scenarios... they have multiple rubies ready to set in multiple rings, or they have one ruby, and they want you to customize the ring. Since the listing states "vintage stones," I would suspect it's the latter (plus it's awfully difficult to source rubies, especially untreated, with comparable 4 C's to offer in one umbrella listing). In either case, I would ask to see photos and videos of the exact ruby... and even diamonds. Also, they're listed as E color and VS1 clarity, so they should be high quality.

How would you approach making an offer on Etsy? I’ve never bought from there before

At the bottom of the page, there is a "Message Lisa" button. Click that to contact the owner. Simply say that you're interested in the ring, but your max budget is ________. Be sure to also address any other questions you may have about the ring, return policy, etc. Good luck! :)

Omg 5ct lol

Right? Big difference. But if having a ruby or spinel is important to you, then it doesn't matter how large of a garnet you can get for the same or less $. Otherwise, if you enjoy garnet, it's a nice bonus!

Is there an unwritten standard for haggling? I don’t want to be insulting … like for cars it’s maybe 10% lol

I just try to be reasonable in what I think the piece is worth and what I want to pay. No set guidelines, but I myself try not to purposely lowball. If it's listed for $2,200, I might try $1,800 as my very lowest first offer. Just keep in mind, she may not be willing to discount the price at all. Or she may come back with $2,000. You never know... but it seems defeatist not to try. :D

No I didn’t! It is quite the honker! Beautiful. Gosh it’s so hard to decide.

It seems there are a lot of pink rubies- I thought the deep reds were most desirable

Red is certainly most desirable, but you'll see more pinks/purples, because they're more plentiful and affordable.

Is this a desirable ruby? Is the clarity a problem?

Since this could be a fellow PSer, I certainly don't want to hurt their sale. But I want to be honest, and I'm sure they already know what they have there. Yeah, the ruby looks to be rather included, silky, or both. Also there is no mention of treatments, diamond quality, or condition. You could certainly ask the seller, however. She did mention that the piece has not sold, but is no longer for sale. Perhaps that's changed. Seller also does not accept returns, so proceed carefully.
