Opinions on how this spinel will perform please?

So now that I've learned that my mounting is going to "darken" the stones I put in it - I need an opinion. I've been chatting with Peter about some spinel rough he has. So his best guess is this is what the color will end up like. Its not what I would have picked out at the beginning of this journey and now I'm not sure how to interpret how I think it may perform in the WF pear mount. Peter did say to expect color concentration at the tip.
Experts - please tell me your thoughts.

White metal tends to bring out the grey in grey stones. Since that is a grey spinel for the most part with a touch of violet, it will look very icy cool in that setting. Due to its light tone, you don't have to worry about it blacking out. It will also have brilliance and fine luster if cut by Peter. If you wanted to bring out more violet and less grey in the stone, then rose or yellow gold would work. It depends on what you like, an icy look, or more violet.

Yes, due to the design of the pear shape, colour does tend to concentrate on the tip. Depending on how dark or light it is, there are two likely scenarios.
1. Tip looks great but the rounded part is washed out.
2. Tip becomes really dark (almost inky) but the rounded part is fine.

If the tone is smack dab in the middle, this concentration of colour at the tip is less pronounced. Since you are looking for a lighter toned stone, you are more likely to experience scenario 1.

When looking at a grayish spinel, setting in a white metal will highlight that characteristic that so you end up with what some people call an "icy" cold or "steely" appearance. I like the hints of pink it shows though.

Thanks TL & Chrono!
I should have been a little more specific, I apologize. The stone I posted is not Peter's just one I asked him about trying to narrow down what the color may look like when complete. Here is a picture of his rough (from which I have NO ability to tell anything :errrr: ) Peter describes the color as blue/violet/purple.
"This spinel won't be very dark, but it will be on the richer side (especially toward the point, where color tends to get condensed).
Medium saturation bluish purple."

I knew that stone wasn't Peter's, but it will be nicely cut if it comes from Peter. Always double check restocking fees if you don't like the expected result if you have to return it. Sometimes restocking fees are charged on custom projects. Good luck, I hope it turns out to be what you wanted.

Thanks TL! I forgot to mention to you - my husband loves your avatar :ugeek: He's a math geek and a DBA so he has great appreciation for all things mathematical......

I know a lot of DBA's due to my line of work in RDBMS and IT, my degree is in mathematics though, how funny!

I also love physics.

He said "Ha! Sounds like me!" He loves physics too. He's DB2.
Its a small funny world where jewelry, gemstones and IT and physics intersect

Oracle 11g here, although I've worked with SQL Server and DB2, among others.

I love mathematics, and I feel that it's the language of nature. Maybe my love of nature's crystals is probably somewhat related. :-)

The stone is going to have a lot of gray. Let's start with the first picture you posted - is that a colour you love? If not, don't settle. Keep on looking for one that makes you beam like the sun every time you look at it.

Thank you Chrono - it is NOT a color a love. But at the moment I think I am thrown by how a stone may perform once mounted.

A while back you suggested maybe I should consider amethyst in the hopes I'd find some of that blue/purple I was hoping for. So I've put out some requests to cutters. Gary Braun sent me this one. A Kenyan amethyst that he says is medium-dark with a blue undertone.

I'd love to hear opinions/thoughts please =)

Purple with blue undertones make me go weak at the knees. Does it do the same to you?

Oh yeah it does- and a little dizzy too :loopy:
Do you think that this stone will go a bit darker/deeper but in a good way in the mounting?

Hmmm...he did say medium dark. Have you seen ammy set in a white metal? The ones I've seen are either in yellow gold or rose gold.

My concern is that the halo setting will block out too much light and make the ammy even darker once set. Best to ask for a hand shot of the stone.

Ok, I will. I just have to be patient and wait. Gary's about to head out emerald hunting. So I may not see it until early to mid July.. ;(
